"My after school program is important to me because the staff take care of me."
Ricky, age 7
Bay Park Elementary School
San Diego, CA

Greetings BOOSTers!

It's a new year, a new day, and we want to say thank you for changing the lives of today's youth! We are full of zest and excitement here at the BOOST office and are preparing for our biggest BOOST Conference yet! We are constantly striving towards continuous improvement so that we can serve you and your team while meeting your emerging needs.

We had a very exciting 2011 serving over 3,000 out-of-school time educators across the nation through quality professional development and learning opportunities. Additionally, we also moved our office to a bigger space to accommodate our growing organization. We even took time to celebrate our success at the end of the year with local partners and friends.

What will 2012 hold for us? We hope to continue to learn from you, to share your promising practices and to celebrate your successes! Let's do this! Together we make a (huge) difference!

Leadership is not something you do to people. It's something you do with people.

-Kenneth Blanchard

Thank you for all the work you do to support children, youth, families, and communities.

CORE Educational Services

CTAC Logo

CORE Educational Services (CORE) is a Los Angeles based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to serving at-risk youth by increasing and broadening educational opportunities for them in out-of-school time in areas of art enrichment, outdoor education, and college access.  Every year, CORE hosts the CORE Teen Adventure Challenge (CTAC), an event that gives our teens and their adult team captain a powerful experience as they race through a strategically designed wilderness course. In 2011, CTAC was a great success! We doubled the amount of participants from the previous year, giving over 650 students the opportunity to experience this fun and rewarding event.

On Saturday, April 7, 2012, CORE expects over 1000 teens from under-served areas of Los Angeles County to navigate through a demanding, but exciting course at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas, CA.  Additionally, we expect another 500 local community members to join in on the excitement.

Want to get involved?

CORE is looking for teams, adult racers, event volunteers, and sponsors!  If your organization would like to take part and support this youth-focused event, please contact Diana Rocacorba at Events@coreeducationalservices.org or for more information, visit the event site at www.teenadventurechallenge.com.

ASES Prep Open Mic Night:
Empower Up

Norwalk- ASES Prep elementary after school programs, for the Norwalk La-Mirada Unified School District, hosted the first of its new Empower Up Open Mic Series on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Sanchez Elementary School.  Over 60 students and families from ASES Prep programs throughout the city attended the event which included art work and live performances by students and tutors.  Featured performances included the musical stylings of "Water for Elephants," consisting of Barbara Diaz, Ben Ceja, and Tomas Conseco, music by Daniel Alday and his partner, and a special performance by the Esperanza Flores Dance Company.

Norwalk- La Mirada Highlight Photo 2
Students from 1st to 5th grade, shared their talents, ranging from singing, impromptu dancing, cheerleading, to spoken word.  One 3rd grader performed her rendition of the "Figurative Language Rap," which was undoubtedly one of the most noteworthy performances of the evening.  As the night progressed, more and more students galvanized the courage to enter the limelight, as they observed their peers perform.  "There were so many students at the end of the night that wanted to perform that we ran out of time," said Norma Garcia, Site Coordinator at ASES Prep Johnston.

"This event is about empowerment, not just of students, but also the community.  Students are empowered by other students, when they see their teacher's performing, and reciprocally, teachers are empowered when they see their students perform.  Even spectators begin to feel empowered through the experiences.  The Empower Up is about transforming a community," said Sue Jin Kim, ASES Prep Co-Program Director.

The Empower Up Open Mic is part of ASES Prep's long-term initiative to provide academic intervention that is student-centered and holistic in nature, addressing students' social and emotional needs while preparing them for the academic rigor of college.  By providing meaningful opportunities for students to express themselves in a safe and encouraging environment, they will garner confidence and self-worth that will transcend into the other aspects of their lives.  In addition, the Empower Up is a space for students, families, community members, and educators, to address the areas of need in education and use art as a vehicle for social change.

ASES Prep's Empower Up Open Mic Series takes place on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Sanchez Elementary School in the City of Norwalk.  For more information, please visit
www.nlmusd.org/ases, or call the main office (562) 926-2645.

TEDxYouthDay San Diego

The 2011 TedxYouth day event took place over 3 days, November 19-21, 2011, coinciding with Universal Children's Day. TedxYouth Day featured over 100 events worldwide, with live streaming on 37 dedicated websites. There were total of 60,000 live stream viewers. The events featured over 17,000 attendees, mostly youth participants.

TedxYouth Day San Diego took place on November 20, 2011 at Canyon Crest Academy. The theme of the event was "The World in Our Grasp". The conference focused on inspiring attendees to see a problem and take responsibility to do something about it now. The event featured 23 different speakers and performances with 400students from various high schools. The day featured inspiring speakers, live performances, in a day of learning and connecting with others to motivate the young adults to be agents of change.

TedxYouth Day San Diego

Event speakers included Mark Hixon, marine biologist at Oregon State University, Jason O'Neill, a 15 year old entrepreneur who founded pencil bugs at age nine, Patrick Ivison, a 17 year-old motivational speaker and adaptive surfer, Jake Shimabukuro, Richard Dreyfuss, and Adora Svitak, who published a book at the age of 7, and has written over 300 short stories. Speakers shared stories of hardship, success, and inspiration. Students also had an opportunity to view several performances, including Maia, and robotic dance. High school students were responsible for a vast majority of the efforts including the MC's, sound, and lighting, artists who decorated the lobby, ushers, and empowering presentations.

The youth that were a part of the planning team went above and beyond to create an intentional networking experience for the youth at lunch. Each student received a different colored lanyard at the time of check in. When students entered the gym for lunch, they picked up a reusable lunch bag, hand crafted out of recyclable materials, created by a student club at Canyon Crest Academy. The colored lanyard designated a pre-selected group for the youth to sit with for lunch. In the bottom of each bag was a prompt for the youth to engage and talk about with a group of peers that they had never met before and created a very successful peer networking lunch.

TedxYouth day San Diego was more than just a conference. It was a day for youth to take a step towards making a difference, one action at a time.

TedxYouth Day Performance

Hear what participants had to say about the San Diego event:

"I thought that it was the most inspiring day of my life and because of it I know I will set out to do something big and really help  change this world as well as help  others that are less fortunate. Also, I was motivated to do better in life and really live my life everyday knowing that I did my best, I did what I wanted to do, and everyday that I am living was worth it.
"    "It was an amazing experience that was truly inspiring and unforgettable. Most importantly, I was able to leave that event realizing what is important to me and what I want to do to make a difference in the world."

"It was great and so much fun, and made me feel like an important person in our society. I now have more ambitious plans for the future and want to change the world like the TED speakers I saw."

YMCA of Long Beach Cambodia Project

YMVCA Staff Highlight Photo

Six of The YMCA of Greater Long Beach Community Development YMCA Cambodian American Staff have been working on a service learning cultural exchange experience in Cambodia partnering with the Cambodia YMCA. The team of six young Cambodian Americans along with the Vice President of Community Development, the Senior Art Director of Change Agent Productions and the Community Development YMCA Board Chair all traveled to Cambodia to help the Cambodia YMCA strengthen its programming, strategize its PR and learn from its participants and members.

This international project's goals were to help the six Cambodian American YMCA Staff who have never visited their country of origin to learn from their home country's cultural heritage and also give back to the young people involved with the YMCA there. The YMCA of Greater Long Beach staff hope to make many more journeys to the Cambodia YMCA for other young Cambodian Americans to recapture their heritage and give back to their country through service with the YMCA.

The YMCA of Greater Long Beach provided a day camp for 100 street kids from the Cambodia YMCA Street Children's School. These children are living on the streets and in the poorest slums of Phnom Penh, the capital. They come to the YMCA program because they are not attending state school and because they are guaranteed one meal a day there.

Another much more in depth project involved teaching five days of digital media and leadership skills to 30 young people who are members and staff of the Cambodia YMCA. This project is ongoing and will culminate in the Cambodia YMCA teaching digital media arts continuously and starting a micro-enterprise in Phnom Penh as a revenue generating social enterprise for the YMCA there.

A film maker captured their experiences and insights, reflections of their emotional, physical and cultural awakenings and growth and they hope to have a documentary finished in late January for submittal to film festivals and Cambodian community showings throughout the US.

This project is unique in that it was developed by Cambodian Americans and has many similarities to a Jewish Travel Project where children and Grand Children of the Jewish Holocaust go back to Israel and learn about their cultural heritage and the genocide. Cambodian Americans feel a need to reconnect to Cambodia, learn about their history, especially the genocide of the Khmer Rouge years where nearly 2,000,000 people were tortured and starved to death. They also need opportunities to give back to Cambodia's youth and help the country heal thus healing their own generational wounds from that dark time.

"Parenting Strategies to Conquer the CyberBullying Puzzle"

Breakfast Clubc Blog LogoBy John Vandenburgh
Founder
PLUS Program, CyberBullying Alert
Los Angeles, CA

"Many articles being written lately are suggesting that parents are the missing piece in solving the cyberbullying puzzle. What they are suggesting is that communication between parents and their children is often too many times missing.  Parents need to truly get involved in "cyber" discussions with their children. We need to take the initiative to dialogue on "cyber" issues that our children are engaging in. The following questions and strategies will help parents initiate and sustain conversations with their children.

Initiating Conversation Questions:

  • All questions are asked from parent to child
    • "If I was to spend an hour a night online, which sites do you think I would enjoy going to?"
    • "Can you show me how to get to the site?"
    • "What sites do you enjoy visiting?"
    • "What is your favorite site to go to? How often do you go there?"
    • "What sites do your friends enjoy going to?"
    • "If I wanted to play video games online, where would I go?"
    • "What are your favorite video games to play online?"
    • "What do you think my user name should be?"
    • "What is your user name you use with your friends?"
    • "Is there anything I should worry about when I am online?"

Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution

The Korematsu Institute wants to send you a FREE Teaching Kit that helps teachers instruct about California's new Special Day of Recognition, the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.

We hope you inform your teachers about this FREE Teaching Kit, and help us spread teaching materials about pivotal story in U.S. History.

January 30th 2012 marks the second annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.  This California Special Day of Recognition honors a civil rights champion who took his fight against the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II to the United States Supreme Court (Korematsu v. United States, 1944).  Fred Korematsu was exonerated almost 40 years later and was eventually awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton.

President Clinton said, "In the long history of our country's constant search for justice, some names of ordinary citizens stand for millions of souls ... Plessy, Brown, Parks ... To that distinguished list, today we add the name of Fred Korematsu."

The Korematsu Institute  has a wealth of free teaching materials that help students learn about Fred and the Japanese American internment during World War II.  Items include:

·        a K-12 teaching guide,

·        a Fred Korematsu classroom poster,

·        videos appropriate for students at all grade levels,

·        a one-day lesson plan/PowerPoint presentation.

·        Also new this year is a free 24 minute version of the Emmy Award winning video, "Of Civil Wrongs and Rights, the Fred Korematsu Story."

"We want as many teachers as possible to teach about this important part of U.S. and Constitutional history," says Karen Korematsu, Fred's daughter.  "We've worked with funders to make sure materials are free of charge and also downloadable."

Elementary Education Director, Student
Amigos de UCLA

Jean's general job duty is to create supplemental resources for our elementary school tutees. However, this year, she has gone above and beyond her typical responsibilities by implementing a portable library. After learning that our elementary school site lacks a library, Jean solicited book donations from all over the country. After cataloguing the books by reading level and topic, Jean has initiated a reading program for our students: they check out books each week and receive prizes for reading and returning their books the following week. Our students are so excited to finally have grade-appropriate and engaging reading material, and Amigos de UCLA is very lucky to have Jean on our staff.

Youth Activity
Career Interest Map

This activity provides youth with a chance to explore career options that tie directly to their interests. Career maps are designed to build and expand awareness of a wide variety of careers. It provides a place to start the conversation about careers, interests and planning for the future. Career maps can be used as a stand alone activity or as a way to introduce more formal career exploration. Career Interest Maps require very few supplies and little advanced preparation, making them a perfect activity to use during transition times or as a fill-in on rainy days. Best of all there are no wrong answers, so everyone can participate successfully. The activity can easily be adapted to the age and developmental abilities of the group.

Prep time: Less than 5 minutes

Activity time: Varies

Grade level: 6th grade and up

Group size: Individual, Small Group, Large Group

Environment: Flexible to fit any environment or setting

Objective: Raise awareness of careers and identify personal interests

Materials needed:
-Downloadable Handouts  or blank paper
-Flip chart/white board and markers
-Pens/pencils

Preparation: Copying handouts (attach)

Directions:

1. Frame - as a group and list of as many jobs possible in 2 minutes. Discuss their list and how well it reflects the real world. What is missing? How would the world be different without these jobs?

2. Identify - Think of two things you enjoy most and write them in the gray ovals on your map. You can add additional interest circles to your handout or create multiple maps.

3. Brainstorm - Write down any job you can think of on the lines provided that relate to each interest. Add extra lines if needed. Remember this is just brainstorming, so do not worry about skills, education or job outlook, etc right now. NOTE: It's OK to lists athlete, actor, etc. This activity will help youth thinking about other ways to put their interests to work.

4. Discuss - Does anyone needs help identifying jobs? Share results, jobs identified and what steps someone would need to take to get each job.

*This is a good time for a reality check about the odds of becoming a pro athlete, etc.

Optional next steps for older students:

5. Connect - Looking at the jobs listed, are there any that relate to both interests? On the sample, Lauren found that coaching, teaching gym or being a personal trainer would connect her love of sports and her desire to help people.

6. Explore - Older students can use their maps to explore career options. Things to consider are required education, salary and job outlook information, and part-time or entry level jobs that connect to their long-term interest.

Adaptation:

Accomodations can be made to assist students including reading aloud, writing for the student, and/or using larger sheets of paper. To assist with comphrension, staff can provide additional guidance, pair students together to work as teams or complete the whole activity as a group.

Student Leadership:

Older students can lead the activity with younger students. In addition, students can take turn leading group mapping discussions at a later date. For example, if a speaker is running late, have a student lead the group through identifying jobs related to working with animals.

 Resources:

According to the US Department of Labor, there are 840 unique job types in the USA today. Additional labor information and statistics can be found online at www.bls.gov/soc/home.htm

Black History Month

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of "Negro History Week," the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.
