Dear BOOSTers,
Many of you started your programs in August, while this week is the second week back to school for others.
Remember to set the tone by creating a positive climate of acceptance and safety. If you don't set the tone, the students will do it for you! It is important to set polices and procedures and have your entire team on the same page. Consistency is vital for program success. Once you set up policies and procedures determine how you will reinforce individual student behavior. Remember to focus on what students CAN do instead of what students CANNOT do by giving them choices and empowering them.
Need more tips on Program Management and Positive Discipline? We would love to come to your program and provide a half-day or all-day training on these topics. Please contact Tia Quinn for more information tia@boostcollaborative.org.
Thank you for all of the work you do to support children, youth, families, and communities.

LA's BEST - BritWeek's Joy of Reading Book Club and Essay Contest
For eight LA's BEST students, their essays for BritWeek's "The Joy of Reading Book Club and Essay Contest" won them an amazing all expenses-paid trip to London, England. The Joy of Reading Book Club and Essay Contest was designed as a way to introduce students in LA's BEST After School Enrichment Program to classic British children's literature. As part of the Joy of Reading, students at 84 LA's BEST sites formed "Classic British Book Clubs" and chose titles from a long list of children's classics written by British authors. The books were then read aloud by both students and adult staff to expose all children in the clubs to the stories.
After completing the book, the students wrote essays about which character they most identified with in the story. Before the contest began, students were informed that there was a very exciting prize for contest winners, but were not told it was a trip to London. From the participating schools, there were more than 450 submissions, which were narrowed down to the top eight winners.
In London, the students visited Buckingham Palace, rode on the famous London Eye, toured the Tower of London, saw the musicals The Wizard of Oz and Shrek the Musical, attended a reception at London's City Hall with Mayor Boris Johnson, and much more.

ARTastic Camp 2011
This summer Voila Art hosted it's second annual ARTastic summer camp in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The camp ran for five weeks and engaged 35 kids in art classes. Each week the class focused on a specific age group with age-appropriate art activities.
One week, kids learned about Georgia O'Keeffe and studied her paintings, and then painted their own pastel flowers inspired by O'Keeffe's famous flower paintings. Another week, kids learned about one-point perspective and different techniques to paint perspective in their works. They used that knowledge to paint a boat that was docked in the bay.
Over the summer, the kids worked with a variety of mediums, from oil paints to water color pencils. Each day the kids took a break by going on an "adventure walk" through the nearby woods to the water. The kids learned that if they could draw a square, triangle, circle, oval, and squiggly line, they could draw anything!

Youth Activity
Soilless Pinto Bean Experiement
This is an easy experiment to conduct with your students, grades K-5. The whole experiment can last up to two weeks, but requires little time each day.
Materials needed (per student): 2 pinto beans 1 paper towel sheet 1 ziplock sandwich bag
Instructions: 1. Wet the paper towel with water. Ring out the excess water. 2. Fold the 2 pinto beans into the wet paper towel. 3. Place the paper towel and pinto beans in the ziplock bag. Seal the bag. 4. Leave the bag sealed for one to two weeks.
When students open the bag, they will see that their beans have sprouted. This experiment shows students that it is possible for plants to grow without soil. During the one to two week process, have students write their observations. What did the beans look like before they were placed in the bag? What is happening inside the bag while it is sealed? What do the beans look like at the end of the experiment?

Love in Your Voice

"It's not always easy to be yourself. Maybe you can relate to this. I'm in a café with a cup of tea. It's funny actually. There's a trendy wooden table beside me.
As I sit to write the first words of this blog project, in my head I hear the voices of writers I'm reading and speaker types famous for dumb one-liners. They are a crowded group in a room somewhere in my brain, an indecipherable rumble. 'No Chad. Be you. Find your voice. Don't write like them.'"
