Content Literacy for After School Training of Trainers (TOT) Session

Target Audience: Elementary, Middle, and High School training teams, made up of the regional leads for after school, literacy experts from county offices of education, and after school program leaders from counties, districts, and community-based organizations supporting after school.
Trainer: Dr. Nancy Frey-Associate Professor, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA
All staff members involved in after schools programs can have a positive impact on students' academic achievement and literacy development. This interactive session will focus on specific research-based strategies that are immediately useful during homework assistance and enrichment activities, including read alouds/thinkalouds, writing to learn, and graphic organizers.
Cost: $125.00 per person (or $130.00 if paying by credit card)
Lunch will be provided. Training fee includes ALL materials- binder of TOT content, DVD of videos and CD of materials and training PowerPoint.
Additional support materials recommended but not included: Strategic Teaching and Learning-Standards-Based Instruction to Promote Content Literacy in Grades 4-12, California Department of Education.
Please note that pre-registration will guarantee workshop materials. We are unable to guarantee workshop materials for on-site registration.
All BOOST trainings include an action planning, post-workshop evaluation, opportunities to share promising practices, and resources to supplement the area of focus. Our trainings are geared for groups of up to 50 participants and include all workshop materials and light snacks. Workshops are highly interactive with the core of each session connected to success for all students.

About the Trainer: Nancy Frey is an Associate Professor of Literacy in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. She is a recipient of the Christa McAuliffe award for excellence in teacher education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She has coauthored several books on literacy, including Language Learners in the English Classroom (with Doug Fisher and Carol Rothenberg), and was a co-recipient (with Doug Fisher) of the NCTE 2004 Kate and Paul Farmer award for outstanding writing for the article, "Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School," published in the English Journal. She teaches a variety of courses in elementary and secondary literacy in content area instruction and in supporting students with diverse learning needs.
