| Letter From BOOST | Dear BOOSTers, November is National Runaway Prevention Month. To help everyone better understand runaway youth the National Runaway Switchboard has put together a film entitled "Why They Run." This sheds light on the problems that already exist and the research that has been done to try to solve them. An an effort to draw more attention to the subject they have also begun "Project Green Light". Organizations across the country will be giving our green light bulbs in the hopes that buildings and porches across the country will glow green for awareness.
To find out more about National Runaway Prevention Month please visit the National Runaway Switchboard Website.
Thank you for all of the hard work that you provide to support children, youth, families, and communities everyday. Together, we can make a difference! The BOOST Collaborative Team

BOOST Breakfast Club
| | Laughter is Good Medicine
Justin McGlamery, Saint Joseph College
Adventure Education Coordinator & Adjuct Faculty, West Hartford, CT
Have you ever had that group that just couldn't get their sillies out? You know, the gigglers, the nervous laughers, or the kids who are just sharing a private joke or kidding around on the side?
So often, students have spent their days sitting and focusing on work or drilling for standardized testing that by the time they are out of school and able to let loose a little, they have a hard time refocusing on the new learning opportunities and activities we have planned for them. Rather than engage in the same old power struggle, why not mirror the good?

| BOOST Buzz | Meet the New BOOST Ambassadors and Intern The BOOST Collaborative is lucky to have two fantastic interns this fall as part of the BOOST Team. Nathan Say and Sunny Lu are great assets to our organization and have a lot of expertise and enthusiasm to contribute to new and on-going projects.
Nathan Say is a crusader for Social Justice in the disability and LGBT communities. After graduating from Brigham Young University-Hawai'i with a Bachelor's Degree in History, Nathan came out as being Gay and Disabled. Nathan has lived in San Diego since June 2010 where he worked with the Center for Emerging Leadership giving disability awareness presentations to elementary school kids in summer day programs. In Hawaii, where he lived previously, Nathan worked with the "My Voice, My Choice" Project as Project Coordinator. "My Voice, My Choice" provided youth and young adults Ages 13-30 with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to be mentored into positions of leadership through one-on-one mentoring, innovative workshops, leadership academies and co-sponsored activities that promoted inclusion. Nathan was also active in the Hawaii's Pride at Work local chapter, which supported LGBTUnion Workers, as well as grassroots efforts in support of a law that would allow Same-sex civil unions in Hawaii.Nathan is pleased to be interning with BOOST Collaborative, as he learns about the world of Out of School Time programming.
Sunny Lu grew up in China and came to US for school 4 years ago. She is a recent graduate of University of California San Diego with a degree in Communication. Marketing and event planning have always been Sunny's passion. Before joining BOOST as an Intern, she interned for both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations, and her intern experience from Confucius Institute at San Diego State University increased her interest towards the education field. She never knew there is such huge demand for various educational support in the local communities. She has decided to continue her efforts by working with education based non-profits so to make contribution to changing the world.
Born and raised, Nick Fontaine spent nearly his entire life living in San Diego, California. Being a Californian he's spent plenty of time in maritime based programs and organizations such as The Junior Life Guards and the Navy Sea Cadet Corps, as well as being a former gymnast and ballet dancer. Mid-way through his sophomore year of high school he transferred to Health Sciences High and Middle College where he participated in various internships such as working with SHARP hospitals, the network administrator of his school and US Army National Guard recruiting office. He has finally found his place as a part of the BOOST Collaborative team.
If he isn't hanging out with friends in and around Tierrasanta or City Heights he can usually be found at the local shooting ranges working on his marksmanship. Also, fond of the outdoors, Nick often runs hikes, camps and mountain bikes; feeling perfectly at home with the dirt beneath his boots and the sun above his head. |

San Diego County Halloween Candy Buy Back Program
For the second year San Diego County will be given the opportunity to keep their kids healthy after Halloween and support U.S. troops by giving them a taste of home. Healthy Kids Choice, Inc. has partnered with the San Diego Childhood Obesity Initiative and 14 local dentists and physicians to collect excess candy from eager youth. Children who wish to bring in their unopened Halloween candy to participating dentist and physician offices located around the county will receive $1 per pound. Collected candy will then be sent as a gift to United States military service men and women serving our country overseas via Operation Gratitude.
Cheryl Moder, Director of the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative believes "this program is a perfect fit for the San Diego community." And is "very encouraged by the number of dentists and physicians that are volunteering to participate this year and are hopeful our local families will see the many benefits this program brings."
Not only are the local dentist and physicians offices participating, but also many local shippers have agreed to ship the candy to Operation Gratitude at no cost enabling the program to collect as much candy as possible. The first year of this program yielded a whopping 2,300 pounds of candy and this year they are raising the bar and making their goal 2,800 pounds. For troop safety, Operation Gratitude works from the Army National Guard armory in Van Nuys, California to assemble the packages. Once completed, they are sent to service members overseas.
If you are interested in having your youth participate there is a list of participating San Diego dentists and physicians on their website here. Each site is accepting candy on different dates.

| Staff Highlight | Jessalyn Allen-Harris Be A Champion, Houston, TX
Jesselyn Allen-Harris (Jess) is the type of afterschool professional that everyone wants on their team. Starting her day before 6 am and ending well after 8 pm is the norm for this young lady who dedicates her life to the students she serves. Jess manages 9 Site Coordinators all at various campuses in the Klein Independent School District in North Houston. Through her efforts, over 2,300 students are given the opportunity to participate in a quality afterschool program that goes beyond simple academics and stretches into true enrichment and inspired yet disguised learning. It is not unusual for this leader to have her arms covered with paint splotches or her face lightly powdered with flour as she readily jumps in to assist with arts and crafts or culinary classes. The area she serves was once known as the jewel of North Houston but has been hit hard by the downturn economy. Having grown up in the area herself, Jess makes it her daily mission to push the envelope to give all youth the opportunity to achieve their very best. She is a hidden secret in North Houston that is making a difference with every child.
- Nominated and submitted by: Shawn Petty, Program Director Be A Champion, Inc., Houston, TX

Research
| America After 3PM: From Big Cities to Small Towns
America After 3PM: From Big Cities to Small Towns is a special report that takes a fresh look at data from America After 3PM, the most in-depth study ever to explore how America's kids spend the after school hours. The new study examines how kids' afterschool experiences differ from one community to another. The nearly 30,000 household data set from America After 3PM was divided into three community types-rural, urban and suburban-and analyzed for differences in afterschool participation, access, barriers, satisfaction and more.
Overall, From Big Cities to Small Towns, sponsored by JCPenney Afterschool, finds that the nation has a long way to go to meet the needs of kids and families from urban, suburban and rural communities when schools are not in session.
