| Lights on After School | | Lights On Afterschool is a national public awareness campaign, led by the Afterschool Alliance, to call attention to the importance of after-school programs for America's children, families and communities. Lights On Afterschool events provide great opportunities to build relationships and visibility locally, and send a strong and united afterschool message across your state and nationally.
For the first time ever, the four presidents on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial will light up in commemoration of Lights on Afterschool. The lighting will take place October 16 and adds yet another national landmark to the list of national treasures that have recognized Lights On Afterschool. The Lindbergh Beacon atop Los Angeles City Hall has been lit in past years and this will be the fourth year in a row that the Empire State Building has been lit for the event.
The 11th annual Lights On Afterschool will take place on October 21, 2010. Register your event to receive planning tips and tools, free posters and more. |

| BOOST Breakfast Club Featured Blog | Stop, Focus, Reflect
Jaime Stephanidis, Program Associate American Institutes for Research, Chicago
As schools and afterschool programs across the country are gearing up for the 2010-11 school year, now is a good time to stop, take a breath, and reflect about where we are. While this might seem counterintuitive to some of us (I know many of us try to take that breather at the end of the school year), it's always good to go into a new year with an open mind. As someone who conducts training, professional development, and technical assistance with afterschool program staff, I often focus on the importance of making a plan. I try to end each session with a group by having participants write down at least one thing they will do based on information learned in the training. Sometimes this can be as simple as talking to the right people back at the program to get the ball rolling on something, or as complex as developing a sustainability team. Whatever it is, I always ask participants to write it down and include a timeline... To read more by Jaime Stephanidis please click here. |

The Happiness Club
Chicago, IL
The Happiness Club's mission is to engage and inspire young people - diverse in age, race, and background - to adopt a set of ethics and serve as role models for others, by creating original music and dance that educates youth and encourages positive values. The Happiness Project is based on the idea that the most powerful message for youth is a message that comes from their peers. With that in mind, they bring together youth from Chicago who sing, dance, rap and create original material for a sensational musical show designed to encourage positive values and social change through the arts. Members sing out against drugs, gangs, violence and smoking and say "yes" to education, tolerance, high self-esteem and helping the environment.
By supporting these youth The Happiness Club is providing training in the arts for many youth who wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity, while at the same time providing them with activities to fill their free time, and spreading a positive message to all the groups they perform for. Part of what has allowed them such great success is their partnership with Wright College (of City Colleges of Chicago). They have offered them space to rehearse and pro bono office space which allows the youth to rehearse in a comfortable environment with adequate facilities.
They have preformed for a wide variety audiences such as President Clinton, and Secretary of State Colin Powell, but also local at-risk schools and neighborhoods. Most recently they performed at Kidzapalooza. Their most recent song, "So Hot," addresses the issue of global warming and won to City of Chicago 2010 Earth Day Video Contest.

| Staff Highlight | Amanda Morales Continuing Development Inc./ Child Development Services Tustin, CA
In the four years since Amanda joined CDI/CDC she has steadily moved from teacher to Assistant Site Supervisor and recently to Site Supervisor. She is a mentor and willingly shares her knowledge and resources by teaching back to her fellow teachers. Recently Amanda was given a new challenge of starting a new center & program at Orchard Hills School that currently serves 5th & 6th graders only. Education in Media
| Waiting for Superman
"From Davis Guggenheim, the Academy Award-winning director of "An Inconvenient Truth," comes another stirring, must-see clarion call of our times: "Waiting for Superman," a deeply presonal exploration of the current state of public education in the U.S. and how it is affecting our children. Fueled by his conscience and electrified bythe possibilities for change, Guggenheim sets off on a probing journey into the lives of five unforgettingable kids whose dream, hopes and untapped potential reveal all that is at stake at this critical moment.
In spite of their rousing determination and grit, the shocking reality is that most of the film's touching and funny cast of kids will be barred from a chance at what was once taken for granted: a great American education."

Research
| How Out-of-School Time Program Quality is Related to Adolescent Outcomes
"Child Trends examines the hypothesis that adolescents in high-quality and safe programs tend to engage in fewer risky behaviors, to have greater social competency, and to have better school performance than adolescents not in a program. The data strongly supports the expected associations, even when social and economic factors are taken into account. Importantly, they find no significant differences between adolescents in a low- or medium-quality program and those not in a program, except for one instance where participation in a medium-quality program is associated with positive school performance when compared with no program participation. Participating in a low-quality program was never different than not being in a program at all."

CVS Community Grants - October 31st
To ensure that we make a positive impact, the 2010 Community Grants Program will focus on a few key areas. One area is on public schools for children with disabilities that promote a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs. We are devoted to supporting organizations that enrich the lives of children with disabilities through inclusive programs. Through our Community Grants Program we work to ensure that students are not left behind in school. Proposed programs must be fully inclusive where children with disabilities are full participants in an early childhood, adolescent or teenage program alongside their typically developing peers.
