BOOST Breakfast Club Featured Blog
| The Challenge of Creating a Culture - Erika Malone, Eveoke Dance Theater San Diego, CA
Almost every day, I am a teacher, a
student, or a leader. Sometimes I play one role at a time. Sometimes
I play all three at once. One could say I dance in between them. I'm
sure that all of us who work with you move between these roles and
watch our peers and our students do the same.
The question I keep coming back to,
no matter what role I am in, is how do I create a culture that I can be
proud of and inspired to be a part of? And what I mean by culture in
this context is the feeling in the room when youth come in, or the
essence of our staff meetings, or the way we work problems out when
they arise, or the way we walk our talk as related to our
organizational mission. I'm talking about the kind of culture that is
obvious. If a new student walks in, they will know by the décor on the
wall, by the way they are greeted, by the feeling in their heart when
they leave, and by the idea of what it would be like to come again... Read more by Erika Malone here. |

| Our High School Intern Graduates

On June 17th Andrew Cagle, our High School Intern, graduated from Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego, CA. Andrew has been a great addition and a valuable part of our team for the past 1.5 years and we are happy to have him stay with us throughout the summer through our Summer Intern Program.
The graduation ceremony at HSHMC for his senior class was moving and stressed the supportive atmosphere that the school prides itself on. Not only did every student receive a hug from every faculty member after receiving their diploma, but the teachers also sang Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" to all of their students.
We are extremely proud of Andrew and all that he has accomplished. He plans to attend Mesa College in the fall and we wish him all the best as he starts a brand new life journey.

| Program Highlight | Kids to Kids
Founded in 2005 by four
middle school girls in Massachusetts, Kids to Kids is a youth-led movement that
encourages youth to fundraise in their own communities to create opportunities
for their peers around the world. The organization accepts funds raised by its
youth members and then encourages Peace Corps members and local Community
Leaders to submit their ideas for projects to improve the lives of kids in
their communities. Projects are then posted online where Kids to Kids Members
vote for their favorites, giving every kid a voice in deciding which projects
receive support. The organization then awards grants of up to $500 to projects voted
on the most - bringing arts, sports, education and environmental projects to youth
from around the world. Most recently, from June
5th to June 30th, Kids to Kids has had their 2010 online
voting polls open to their members. They voted on the 92 project proposals
received, including many from five new countries: Ecuador, Peru, Rwanda,
Morocco and the Philippines. Projects being voted on ranged from supporting a
youth basketball team in Costa Rica to starting a photography project in the
Dominican Republic to starting a screen printing microenterprise for girls in
Morocco. Almost 400 members from 46 states have voted and
given their opinion on where the funds that they helped to fundraise will go. A total of over $35,000 will be dispersed in the month of July and a listing of
grant awardees will be posted on the Kids to Kids website. The only
requirement for youth to join is that everyone take the Kids to Kids pledge
online! To learn more about Kids
to Kids please visit www.kidstokids.org.

| Project UNIFY
Project UNIFY is a U.S. national project, funded by the U.S. Department
of Education. Its goal is to activate young people around the country
in an effort to develop school communities where all young people are
agents of change - fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people
with intellectual disabilities by utilizing the programs and
initiatives of Special Olympics.
Project UNIFY is for students, teachers and educators who believe that:there
should be more opportunities for young people of all ages and all
ability levels in schools across the country to make friends and work
together for change.
students with intellectual
disabilities should become part of the core fabric of the education
community and be perceived as assets in their school and community.
students
without intellectual disabilities can and should increase their
knowledge, skills and comfort in forming positive social relationships
with students with intellectual disabilities and come together to
address societal issues.
that policymakers and
education leaders should develop policies and support quality practices
that encourage positive school climates with safe and nurturing
learning environments for all students.

| Diplomas Count 2010: Graduation by the Numbers
A new national report from Education Week and the Editorial Projects in Education (EPE) Research Center finds that the nation's graduation rate has dropped for the second consecutive year, following a decade of mostly solid improvements. Although the latest decrease is considerably smaller than that found the previous year, the report shows that, on a national scale, 11,000 fewer students will earn diplomas.
The report-part of an ongoing project conducted by the Bethesda, Maryland based Editorial Projects in Education-also tracks graduation policies for all 50 states and the District of Columbia and presents an updated analysis of graduation patterns for the nation, states, and the country's 50 largest school systems.
For more information or to download the report, please click here. It will be provided for free for a limited time.
