Dr. Cathy Vatterott is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. As a former middle school teacher and principal, and currently the parent of a college student, she has experienced homework from a variety of perspectives. She is the author of numerous articles about education and three books-Rethinking Homework: Best Practices That Support Diverse Needs (ASCD, 2009), Becoming a Middle Level Teacher: Student-focused Teaching of Early Adolescents(McGraw Hill, 2007), and Academic Success through Empowering Students (National Middle School Association, 1999). She frequently presents at national conferences and has served as a consultant and workshop presenter for K-12 schools on a variety of educational topics. She first became interested in homework as the frustrated parent of a 5th grader with learning disabilities. Since then, she has presented her homework research to over 6,000 educators and parents in the United States, Canada, and Europe and has conducted several Professional Development Institutes about homework for ASCD. She has been interviewed as a homework expert for articles appearing in such publications as Parents magazine, Better Homes and Garden magazine, Child magazine, Working Mother Magazine, the Globe and Mail (Canada's national newspaper), and numerous U.S. newspapers and educational websites, as well as for radio and television.

Homework and Families: Issues, Trends, and Challenges What do we know about the value of homework in learning? How can we reduce the stress that homework adds to family life and provide support for students who are unable to complete homework at home? This keynote will provide a snapshot of K-12 homework practices, issues, and current trends and discuss how out-of-school programs can support schools and families.
|
Working Together with Schools and Families to Support Homework Completion This session will continue the homework conversation and provide guidelines for parents and educators, tools for communication to teachers, and strategies to assist K-12 students in becoming independent learners. Examples of successful after school homework support programs will be shared. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss the challenges and successes in providing effective homework support.
