President's Message
PARKING in downtown Winchester took top billing in June when some 50 residents, building owners, shop keepers, and a cross-section of businesses, commuters, schools, library, fire fighters, police, and senior center participants crowded the Board of Selectman room for a hearing on the Planning Board's Parking Study Committee. Our 6 Chamber representatives to the town committee, aptly led by Chris Mulhern, participated on this committee the past couple years. The hearing was a resounding endorsement for change in parking plans and management and the audience clearly showed support for the Selectmen and Town Manager to review and consider implementing the suggested plan (all details on the Town of Winchester Web Site) as soon as possible.
Late in the hearing I went to the microphone because I kept hearing that the parking is needed for downtown shoppers so I spoke to clarify that while we have nearly 30 retail establishments there are far more office and commercial tenants with customers needing parking as well such as advertizing agencies, accountants, banks, beauty salons, doctors, lawyers, restaurants, etc. Visits to Town Hall, the Library, the Senior Center, and 3 schools also require parking as well as the many commuters. Bill Caci noted after that I neglected to indicate all the Real Estate Brokers who also work downtown! SO we will keep on monitoring and hope to see some positive changes SOON.
Finally, the Chamber of Commerce Booth at the Saturday Farmer's Markets has been overwhelmingly popular - THANK YOU to all the Chamber member businesses who have signed up to "show case" their businesses this summer. Judy Manzo - President Winchester Chamber Board of Directors
