Having been a teacher in my "first life," I have always welcomed September as a time of "new beginnings" each year.
So I am inspired to take action after reading Rebel Bookseller:
Why Indie Businesses Represent Everything You Want to Fight For- From Free Speech to
Buying Local to Building Communities by Andrew Laties. In the Forward, longtime Vermont
bookseller, Edward Morrow says "in these interesting times, change is widely recognized as a
permanent condition, and new skill sets are required to successfully deal with the challenges
perpetually altering conditions...While the context of his advice is set in the world of books, much of it has more universal applicability, certainly for other independent retailers but also for other endeavors - how to approach any job or task, dealing with the systemic problems of large organizations or ingrained industry practices, etc. Beyond its practical, informational attributes, (this book) is good reading...in how nimble, small businesses can swim with the sharks."
Laties also says "it's unconventional for business people to publish trade secrets,...but my dad edits scientific journals: I learned as a child that good researchers share their findings."
I invite you Chamber Members to look at each other as colleagues rather than competitors, to collaborate and educate our community about your unique offerings, and to give each other your business whenever possible. As a very large group of business people, our collaborations
can have a substantial impact on both our businesses and the quality of life in Winchester and surrounding communities.
Try ONE new idea this month!
