Day 4: The Ultimate Choice

"You shall not murder"
(Exodus 20:13)

The culmination of God's creation came on the sixth day with the creation of man.  "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness...So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them" (Genesis 1:26a, 27).  His creation of man and woman became His crowning work, through whose union the whole earth would flourish and be filled.  "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it" (Genesis 1:28a).  Because man is made in God's image his life has great value and is to be treated as such; with respect, dignity, and honor. "You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor" (Psalm 8:5).

When the Lord covenanted with Abram, He promised him the ultimage gift - life:  "Look up at the heavens and count the stars - if indeed you can count them...so shall your offspring be" (Genesis 15:5). "I will confirm My covenant between Me and you and will greatly increase your numbers" (Genesis 17:2).  Life is God's gift; only He can give it, and only He has the right to take it.  To kill another human being, in a premeditated and deliberate act against a fellowman, is an attack against God, Who made man in His image.  "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man" (Genesis 9:6).

For the Israelites, their life was tied to the land.  Through their obedience to the Lord they would receive the blessings of the land; therefore to take the life of another was an offense, not only against the sanctity of human life, but also against the sacredness of the land.  "Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except fro the blood of the one who shed it.  Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites" (Numbers 35:33-34).  Israel was chosen to be the people through whom God would reveal Himself to all other nations.  To take the life of another into their own hands was an act of prideful rebellion that attacked the very character of God Who had promised to preserve their life.  The supreme blessing of the covenant is the "gift of life rescued from the power of death" (reference 1 Kings 17:22; notes); an ultimate gift that would be fully realized through the atoning sacrifice and shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross for all the sins of mankind (reference Hebrews 9:15).  "In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness" (Hebrews 9:22).

In our Scripture reading today, Genesis 4:1-16, Cain's deliberate plot to take the life of his own brother Abel polluted the land and brought a curse on his own head.  "Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him" (1 John 3:15).  Jesus warned that murder often begins with anger; with anger being the moral equivalent to murder.  "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment" (Matthew 5:21-22a).  We have been commanded to love our fellowman, thereby choosing the path of life and promoting life towards all mankind.  Jesus came that we might experience true life; abundant and eternal life.  "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that ehy may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).  His appearance in the world revealed the limitations of the law which had no power in itself to reform and heal the human heart; it could only restrain the people or punish those who refused to obey it (reference Hebrews 7:18-19).  "You killed the author of life, but God raised Him from the dead...Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord..." (Acts 3:15a,19).

Much of our world today, ignorantly attempting to preserve life by striving to become masters over their own destiny, have only succeeded in causing a landslide that leads to death.  Our own nation has ushered in a culture of death, by following a path that goes against God's orginal purpose and design for man and woman to "be fruitful and increase in number", by making counter-life-producing choices, like that of abortion, homosexuality, and entertaining the discussion of population control.
The Lord made the choice clear for His people Israel, saying, "See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.  For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess...This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to him.  For the LORD is your life, and He will give you many years in the land He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob" (Deuteronomy 30: 15-16, 19-20).  God's basic desire for all mankind is to "Live!" (Ezekiel 16:6b); this is why He came, laying down His own life, and providing the ultimate choice of life to all mankind that we might receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (reference Romans 6:23).  "You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand" (Psalm 16:11).

Let us continue to pray for our brother, Israel, who for generations have been surrounded by the contempt of those who have sought to destroy them and wipe them, as a people, off the map of the world.  They suffered the greatest atrocity known to mankind, the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were murdered because of hatred.  Today, the pot of hatred boils over and the life of a nation hangs in the balance...praise God we know the One Whose life-giving water cools the flame!  May we pray that the Lord's chosen people will come to the river of life and drink deeply from His refreshing well and experience the life of peace that only Jesus Christ can offer.  "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.  God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at the break of day.  Nations are in an uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts" (Psalm 46:4-6).

Heavenly Father, You are our life; apart from You there is no life.  May everything that has breath praise the Lord, for in you we live and move and have our being.  You made the ultimate sacrifice in laying down your life on the cross for our sins, providing us the gift of salvation and the hope of eternal life.  Forgive us, in our arrogance, when we place our own lives ahead of the lives of others, and, when, in ignorance and anger, when we take the lives of others into our own hands.  "...a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps...pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, and the peoples who do not call on your name."   Lord, we know our own nation is falling away from you, so we pray fervently for a revival of hearts to fall in love with you all over again, and a wave of compassion to flow towards your people Israel.  Let us not forsake your chosen nation.  "In wrath remember mercy" we pray.  Discipline us if you must, but restore us to the joy of your salvation so we may bring your light to your people Israel and surround them with your love. The blood of millions are on our hands, the lives of the unborn you have entrusted us to protect.  We seek your forgiveness and pray for your help to stop this injustice and inhumanity.  Turn the tide, and change our culture from death unto life that all men may be saved. Forgive us for how far we have fallen, do not remove our lampstand from its' place.  Lord, snuff out the fire of hatred, but turn up the flame of passion towards you, setting the whole earth on fire for your glory, honor, and praise.  Lord you have made mankind your crowning acheivement, we pray our lives will bring glory to your name, help us to stand firm in this evil hour that you will return to find us faithful, and give us the crown of life.  Lord "we do not make requests of You because we are righteous, but because of Your great mercy.  O Lord, listen!  O Lord, forgive!  O Lord, hear and act!  For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people bear Your name."  In Jesus' Name. Amen.

"Hear, O Israel:
The LORD our God,
the LORD is one.
Love the LORD your God
with all your heart
and with all your soul
and with all your strength.
These commandments
that I give you today are
to be upon your hearts.
Impress them on your
children.  Talk about them
when you sit at home and
when you walk along
the road, when you lie down
and when you get up.
Tie them as symbols on
your hands and bind them
on your foreheads.
Write them on the doorframes
of your houses and
on your gates"
(Deuteronomy 6:4-9)
