"A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him -
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD - and He will delight in the fear of the LORD."
(Isaiah 11:1-3a)

Dear Friend,
I pray that each day you are able to find wonderful opportunities to just sit and soak in the presence of the Lord. As you seek His face, may those moments be multiplied, and may you daily experience the refreshment that comes from spending intimate time with your Lord.
Finding those moments can be difficult as we face an artillery of information and advice, questions and concerns, bombarding us throughout the day. We can hardly find a moment to rest, let alone a moment for intimate time with our Lord, as distractions ring from our pockets, glare at us on our desktop, captivate us in the coffee shop, and hold us hostage on the sofa. Our cell phones, ipods, handhelds, notebooks, computers, and televisions, designed to offer greater convenience in our lives, have instead robbed us of our communion with our God.
As we consider the amount of information available at our fingertips, being whispered in our ears, and staring us in the eye, we must ask ourselves how much of this information is actually influencing our behavior, actions, attitudes, and the decisions we make each day? Who is it that we are listening to? How much of that information are we taking at face value instead of taking it to the Lord in prayer and aligning it with God's Word?
Dr. Charles Stanley, pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, offers wise counsel when he exhorts us not to ask others for their opinion about our situation, but instead to ask, 'What does God's Word have to say about my circumstances?' We are inclined, far too often, to turn to a trusted friend, a notable expert, or a popular talk show host to find answers to our questions, about the challenges we are facing, instead of turning to the Word of God.
"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
But His delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on His law he meditates day and night."
(Psalm 1:1-2)
If we are truly followers of Jesus Christ we need to be (above all else and all others!) consulting our Lord for the direction He would have us to take. He has graciously provided us His glorious guidebook, the Holy Bible, and a wonderful Guide, the Holy Spirit, to lead us down the path He has prepared for us. We must not forget that He has purposed and planned all things since the beginning of creation "This is the plan determined for the whole world....for the LORD Almighty has purposed and who can thwart Him?' (Isaiah 14:26,27). His purposes will prevail and His kingdom will come - He not only created us to take part in this wonderful story, but He has invited us to play a significant role in its' unfolding!
There is nothing in our lives that the Lord is not intimately aware of. If He knows us best, then it would seem obvious that He would also know what's best for us. As we meet with the Lord each day may we have "ears to hear" His counsel and begin to align all things to His wonderful Word (and not at all with the world!). May we turn from the wisdom of the world and return to the will of God as the time of His coming draws increasingly near!
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will cousel you and watch over you."
(Psalm 32:8)
Keep seeking Him and keep delighting in Him...He delights in you!
Grace and peace,
Traci Alexander

Begin your mealtime by reading and meditating on Isaiah 9:1-7.
"And He will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
(v.6b)
The first throne name of God given in Isaiah chapter nine is "Wonderful Counselor". He sits on the throne as our glorious King and watches over us as a faithful Shepherd. He desires to be our guide and direct our every step if we would only submit to His wonderful counsel and acknowledge His glorious presence in our lives. The Spirit of the Lord offers us the Spirit of counsel, and becomes our constant companion walking with us through this earthly life.
"But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him,
on those whose hope is in His unfailing love"
(Psalm 33:18)
The Lord's blueprint for the world includes a wondrous plan for His creation that will one day come to a glorious and grand conclusion. As believers, we long for that day when we will spend eternity with our loving Lord and gracious Heavenly Father. While we wait, however, we have been given a wondrous gift, in the presence of the Holy Spirit, Who offers us His gift of counsel to pattern our every step as we walk out the Lord's plan for our life.
"Counsel and sound judgment are mind;
I have understanding and power."
(Proverbs 8:14)
The Word of God is our textbook and the Spirit of God is our teacher who helps us to daily put on the mind of Christ. Meeting with our divine Counselor should be a vital part of our day as we seek to gain greater understanding for the times we are living in. Often, in the Scriptures, it was only after their many plans failed would Israel turn their attention to seeking the Lord (reference 2 Kings 3:11). As a nation, it is vital we recognize the importance of seeking God's counsel: "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure" (Proverbs 11:4; see also 15:22). It is also important to note that no matter how much wisdom man thinks he has the wisdom of God is supreme. "Many are the plans of a man's haeart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails" (Proverbs 19:21)
Today, may we come before the Lord willing to, "Listen to advice and accept instruction" for "in the end you will be wise" (Proverbs 19:20). Take time this morning to truly seek the counsel of God by making a list of those questions and concerns that are weighing heavy on your heart. Begin to pray through each one, asking the Lord to speak to you through His Word, and then let Him guide you through the Scriptures to find the answers you are looking for. He will not disappoint the heart that truly seeks after Him (reference Jeremiah 29:11-14).
"All this comes from the LORD Almighty,
wonderful in cousel and magnificent in wisdom"
(Isaiah 28:29).

LUNCH BOX
Begin your mealtime by reading and meditating on Judges 11:14 - 29.
"Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah.
He crossed Gilead and Manassah, passed through Mizpah
of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites."
In the Scriptures, the Lord has provided us a perfect picture of the struggles that His people, and nations, go through when they depart from the Word of God. The time of the Judges is a constant cycle of being in and out of the will God; peace then destruction, blessing then discipline. When they failed to listen to the counsel of the Lord, the Israelites found themselves in great distress at the hands of other nations, instead of experiencing the blessings found in resting in the hand of God (Judges 10:8-9).
Our gracious and compassionate Lord cannot bear to see His beloved people suffer for long (reference 10:16b), and, as we find time and time again, He would provide His people a deliverer. In our current reading today, Israel had turned from the Lord to worship false idols and were, therefore, experiencing God's wrath and discipline at the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites. When the Lord heard their cries and raised up Jephthah to lead them into battle, Jephthah sent the Ammonite king a letter chronicling the word of God. The king of Ammon refused his written counsel, and as a result, refused the counsel of God. "For waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers" (Proverbs 24:6).
Jephthah recognized the battle before him was a spiritual battle and, as such, offered the king of Ammon godly counsel: "...whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess...you are doing wrong by waging war against me. Let the LORD, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites" (Judges 11:24b,27). Regardless of how the king responded, Jephthah remembered God's promises in His Word, he shared God's counsel with the king, and he left the results in the hand of God.
As we step out onto the spiritual battlefield each day we need to consider whose counsel we are listening to as we attempt to manuever the minefield at our feet. After the time of the Judges, when the Lord raised up kings to lead His people, Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah offered sound advice to the king of Israel: "First seek the counsel of the LORD" (1 Kings 22:5). How much trouble we would avoid if we would simply follow that word of advice!
As we come to the midpoint in our day, let us take time to thank God for His Spirit of Counsel, and for intersecting our lives with people who counsel us, first and foremost, to seek the Lord in His Word. May we also commit to becoming diligent students of the Scriptures so that we will be prepared to offer godly wisdom when we are approached by others seeking our "advice". The Spirit of the Lord counsels us to walk the path He has planned for us, but also equips us to offer guidance to those He brings across our path "...the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel" (Proverbs 27:9).

DINNER TABLE
Begin your mealtime by reading and meditating on John 14:15-31.
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in My name,
will teach you all things and will remind you
of everything I have said to you." (v. 26)
Our founding fathers recognized the importance of seeking the counsel of the Lord in His Word. The documents that birthed this nation are a testimony to the wise counsel received from diligently studying the Word of God. At its' birth, the leaders of our nation sought the wisdom and mind of God, and were led, by the Lord, to establish Bible societies, missionary societies, and the Sunday School movement. The Word of God and prayer were vital elements in the everyday life of our country. The principles of Scripture were at the center of our government from it's inception, and, as a result, a firm foundation was laid, and the blessings of God were poured out upon this nation.
Unfortunately, the history of America is not unlike the history of Israel, as we see this nation, once rooted and grounded in the Word of God, "exchanging their Glory for worthless idols" (Jeremiah 2:11). Now, instead of experiencing God's blessings, we are experiencing His chastisement. How long until He pours out the full extent of His wrath? God, in His mercy, has given us His Spirit of counsel, so that we will walk, not as the condemned, but rather in response to our true calling as the crowned (reference 2 Timothy 4:8; 1 Peter 5:4)!
The distractions of the world have caused us to lose our focus. We have lost sight of the treasure we have been given in God's Word. Because have not sought the Lord in His Word, as diligently as our founding fathers had, we have buried that once solid and firm foundation under a heaping mound of corruption, deception, and immorality. It's time we begin to clear the clutter and raise up that foundation to its' rightful place in our nation. A good place to begin is in our minds.
The mind is the enemy's greatest battlefield as he works diligently to fill our thought life with discouragement, disallusionment, and defeat. The Spirit of Counsel is at work countering the lies of the enemy with the Truth of the Word of God. He desires to remind us daily to keep our focus on God's kingdom plan and to remember we have a calling to proclaim the message of salvation to the world (reference 2 Corinthians 5:20; Ephesians 6:19-20; Hebrews 10:35-39).
The men and women who came as pilgrims and sojourners in this new land, came with a common goal to "propagate the gospel" and bear the light of Christ to those lost in darkness. They were simply responding to the same commission all believers have been given (reference Matthew 28:18-20). As this day draws to a close, may we return to our roots, digging deeper and more diligently into the Word of God, and be willing to set aside the wisdom of man and, instead, seek the counsel of God. The counsel of the world will never offer us the peace, joy, and victory that God has promised us when we seek Him in His Word (reference Matthew 6:33)!
Jesus promised us, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" and reminded us "...I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Joshua 1:5b; Matthew 28:20b) - He has fulfilled these promises in the wonderful presence of His Holy Spirit - let us praise Him for His wonderful and awesome gift! "He who has ears to hear, let him hear" (Mark 4:9).

Heavenly Father, it is beyond understanding why you constantly reach out to a world
who daily turns their back on you and forsakes the glorious gift of your forgiviness and
salvation. How we praise you, though, that you are a merciful, gracious, and
compassionate God, who waited patiently as you passionately pursued each
one of us to draw us into a loving relationship with you. Lord, we praise you for your
constant blessings in our lives. Even in the midst of our trials we see the beauty of
your creation and the wonders of your kingdom plan. Thank you for sending your
Counselor to live inside us and to be our constant guide; to teach us your Truth and
to remind us daily of your promises, that have been fulfilled, and of those that are yet
to come. "Who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him? But we
have the mind of Christ" Thank you that through your Word we can put on your
mind daily and filter and fight the deception and discouragement the enemy
attempts to plant in our minds. "I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me". Let your Word ever be before us so that
at any moment of the day or night we will be reminded of your Truth and the hope
we have in you! Help us to daily be a source of light and hope to a world lost in darkness and sin. Teach us to tune out the distractions of the world and listen instead to the instruction of your Word. We will watch daily at your doors as we sit at your feet and bask in your
presence. How we praise you, for "you guide me with your counsel, and
afterward you take me to glory..."; "You have made known to me the path of life;
you fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand".
May our lives be a constant reflection of your light and love and may all that
we do and say bring glory and honor to your wonderful and awesome name.
In Jesus' Name. Amen.
