Larry Joe Taylor, our featured musician and event organizer, has been hard at work putting together another great lineup of singer/ songwriters for the music festival this year. Though he calls Stephenville, Texas home, LJT has been enjoying Red River for years. We call his style "Southwest meets Key West," others say he's Texas' version of Jimmy Buffet. Whatever you call it, we promise you won't be disappointed.
His style is upbeat, down-home and magnetic.
His ability to engage spirited audience participation in sing-a-longs,
limbo contests, and untamed conga lines one moment and in their seats spellbound
the next is what makes Taylor stand out among entertainers. -www.LarryJoeTaylor.com |

Music Sounds Better in the Mountains We are less than one month away from the 7th annual "Hot Chili Days, Cool Mountain Nights" Music Festival and Cook-off, August 13th - 15th in Red River. Each year this event grows in size, and this year will be no different. In addition to the stellar lineup of musicians, we've added the New Mexico Green Chile Championship and a Lone Star BBQ Society cook-off to the ever-expanding CASI "Red River Red" chili cook-off. Read more about the cook-offs below.
Take a scenic chair lift
ride to the top of the Red River Ski Area and catch a concert
surrounded by the most breathtaking scenery in the southern Rockies. Enjoy the calming sounds of the Red River while you relax with an
acoustic "songwriter show." Put on your dancin' shoes and get ready
for a two-steppin' good time during an evening concert at the historic
Motherlode Saloon. Music fans love this event because of the "up close and personal" concert venues and the unique access to world-class singers and songwriters. It is not uncommon to see renowned musicians sitting around the fireplace at the Lodge, pickin' and strummin', sharing their gifts with everyone around. Bring your guitar and hop in on the action. How many of your friends can say they've played with a legend? |
New Mexico Green Chile State Championship
It has been said that green chile is the defining element in New
Mexican cuisine. Be it mild or hot, in a sauce or a stew, no New Mexican
cook-off is complete without green chile.
Since the inception of "Hot Chili Days, Cool Mountain Nights," green
chile has had a place at our "chili" cook-off as a people's choice
competitor. As that category began to increase in popularity we realized
that we weren't doing it justice. This year Red River is proud to host
the New Mexico Green Chile State Championship in conjunction with our CASI,
BBQ, and salsa cook-offs. Entrants in this category will now be judged by
a panel instead of by people's choice, and one winner will hold the honor of
being New Mexico's 2009 state
champion. All entries must be cooked on site. Think you can compete? Take a look at the registration
information here.

CASI "Red River Red" Cook-off
The CASI category is our most popular category as this event was built as a CASI sanctioned event. Cooks that participate in the CASI category can earn points towards the grand championship in Terlingua, Texas. For those not in the know, CASI stands for "Chili Appreciation Society International." Entries in this category have a chili powder base and are not allowed to have any fillers like beans or rice. All entries must be cooked on site either in the park or in front of your RV (RV parking around the park available during the cook-off).
CASI's website says it best: "Our mission is to promote chili and raise money for charity." CASI cooks are some of the most fun people in the southwest, and some of the most generous too. With CASI's help, "Hot Chili Days, Cool Mountain Nights" has been able to raise money for the Red River Valley Charter School each year. For information about the CASI category contact John Montgomery or register here.

Lone Star BBQ Society Cook-off This is another first for "Hot Chili Days, Cool Mountain Nights." Red River is very excited about hosting one of the first Lone Star BBQ Society cook-offs outside of Texas. This cook-off will also take place in and around Brandenburg Park with three mouth-watering categories: 1/2 chicken, pork spare ribs, and brisket. Winners will be determined by a panel of judges and all entries in this category must be cooked on site. If you have a great BBQ recipe but haven't mastered the technique of taking it on the road, feel free to enter the open category which will be judged by people's choice. For information on the LSBS check out their website or register here.
