| Inspiration: Quotes of the Month |
When you finish changing, you're finished. - Benjamin Franklin
Without accepting the fact that everything changes, we cannot find perfect composure. But unfortunately, although it is true, it is difficult for us to accept it. Because we cannot accept the truth of transience, we suffer. ~Shunryu Suzuki

| , UNFEAR: Facing Change in an Era of Uncertainty Book - launching January 20, 2011 |
CHICAGO - People across the U.S. live in fear of unemployment, the unpredictable economy and the threat of terrorism, and author, CEO and leadership development expert Karlin Sloan addresses how to combat these worries in "UNFEAR: Facing Change in an Era of Uncertainty".
As a consultant and executive coach, Sloan speaks with powerful corporate leaders every day and, over the years, has seen that many of the people she works with are living with stress and ambiguity. Managing from a fear-based state affects an individual personally, which can lead to consequences that impede a work team and, in turn, the larger organization. The book inspires readers to make decisions out of hope and purpose, rather than out of fear. "Many of the assertive, intelligent people I come into contact with are letting fear cripple their decision-making skills," says Sloan. "I wanted to write a book that provides them with useful tools to reduce fear-based behaviors, to inspire performance, and to align their team or greater organization around a larger purpose." Using examples from business leaders, including P&G, Walmart, Yahoo! and LG Electronics, Sloan offers clear, effective and practical strategies that enhance teamwork and leadership effectiveness regardless of economic uncertainty.
I just finished my first reading of "Unfear" and I'm deeply moved. Karlin has done an amazing job of weaving and synthesizing important ideas and concepts in ways that support looking at ourselves, our organizations and our world in fresh, creative ways. Unfear is an inspiring and practical guide to facing our fears and taking on creating a world that we want to live in. - Marc Lesser, author of LESS: Accomplishing More by Doing Less
Karlin Sloan's new book, "Unfear", strikes the core qualities and commitments necessary to prosper and succeed in our fast-paced changing world. Our leaders must be fully integrated as individuals to be effective. Karlin shows you how to let go and grasp the opportunities that are presented while maintaining your integrity and your composure!!! She is a dynamic leader for our times. - Lawrence Hayes, CEO, CDI Chemical Distribution
A leadership book that engages the head and heart! Karlin Sloan delivers: great metaphors, inspiring stories, and practical, doable, illuminating exercises. Karlin captures the unique millennial opportunity for society in her concept of unfear, and she advances that concept through an extraordinarily clear and useful four-step model for practice in a complex and fast-changing world. Leaders of organizations in search of meaning, relevance, outcomes, justice, and community engagement have a map to success in her narrative. - Raymond E. Crossman, Ph.D., President, Adler School of Professional Psychology

The Blame Game Book - launching March 2011
| KS&C's community of consultants and coaches is remarkably prolific! NEW YORK - Congratulations to Ben Dattner, Ph.D. on his launch of his new book "The Blame Game". For those members of our community in the New York area, you're invited to a book launch party Tuesday, March 22nd, 5:30pm at the Harvard Club in New York City. For better or for worse, the dynamics of credit and blame are at the heart of every team and organization and make or break every career. Unfortunately, credit and blame are rarely assigned in an objective or fair manner, and individual psychology, team dynamics, and corporate culture all influence, and are influenced by, how credit and blame are given and received. Too often, people and organizations get caught up in "the blame game" and the wrong people get blamed for the wrong reasons at the wrong time. The result can be that people are demotivated and demoralized, focus more on organizational politics than on getting the job done, and are too afraid to speak up or experiment with new approaches. In this book, Ben Dattner and Darren Dahl consider how human evolution, our own life histories, and our personalities impact how we assign credit and blame to ourselves and others, as well as how we react to the credit and blame we receive from others. Credit and blame are also at the heart of workplace relationships, and are critical in determining how teams will develop and interact with each other. We'll explore the situations in which we can all be susceptible to "the blame game" and will present recommendations for how we can win in our careers by refusing to play. By taking a more mindful approach to credit and blame, individuals, teams and organizations can overcome the "blame game" and successfully adapt to new challenges instead of remaining stuck in the past.
