Greetings!
Greetings and Happy New Year from Karlin Sloan & Company. We're excited to launch our newly designed MOMENTUM, and let you know about what's new for 2009.
I'm happy to bring you some great developments:
2009 launches a year of RESILIENCE, and we'll be offering a new series of short workshops for organizations who want to cultivate their strength and longevity. Can you build resilience in the midst of plummeting stock prices, declining profits, massive layoffs, and disruptive M&As? The answer -- according to extensive research and the leaders who have successfully guided companies through immense challenges -- is yes.
2009 is also our year of INSPIRATION, and we've begun to offer a leadership journey designed to activate your inspiration, and help you bring inspiration to others. We're also sponsoring a new radio show featuring leaders who are changing the world and inspiring us all.
We're committed
to bringing you the latest in management and leadership research, tools
and tips, and great reading to pass along to your teams. May your new year bring resilience, inspiration, and the ability to change your world for the better.
Read on to find out more!
Sincerely,
|

Resilient Leadership Tips: Encouraging Collaboration
|
In 2009 we are all being expected to tighten our belts and get serious about collaboration. In school we're often taught not to share our work, to compete with others in our classes, and to be at the top of the bell curve. In organizations we need to operate from another paradigm - that work shared is work halved! Collaboration and teamwork are the key to staying productive, increasing morale, and promoting healthy workplace engagement. Three ways to encourage collaboration are:
#1 - Reward the group, not the individual. Make sure when you publicly acknowledge people that it's for accomplishments created in teams or groups, and that every member is called out.
#2 - Build a team oriented culture by creating team rituals. This can be as simple as a monthly sit-down lunch, or something you do to kick off or end every team meeting. At KS&C we encourage our clients to end meetings with a simple exercise in which each person must be acknowledged or appreciated prior to leaving the table. These exercises may start out with some awkwardness in the beginning, but they broaden and build positivity and engagement over time. We hear from teams who swear by it!
#3 - Stop just doing one-on-one meetings, and start meeting with small groups. As a manager this may even lighten your load. Make sure to set clear expectations for the meetings, and state your intent behind them. It may be "to encourage team collaboration" or "to check in to see where I can provide support". Both messages show your positive intent as a leader, and help to communicate the fact that you are there to ensure team success.

Inspiration: Quote of the Month
|
We've gotten great feedback on the quotes we've provided in each issue of MOMENTUM. This year we'll be offering a quote or two each month to keep us focused for the challenges ahead.
The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet.- Theodore M. Hesburgh
Vision in tough times means focusing your teams on a single collective goal. Make sure there's a clear message of what you're working toward, and gather team thoughts about how to get there. Remember that during stressful times we look to our leaders for clarity and for hope. What's the message you're trumpeting for 2009?
