HOMECOMING WEEK RETURNS !!
BandDoes Scotts Valley High School's annual Homecoming Week, set for Monday, October 12 through Friday, October 16, really qualify as good old-fashioned American fun?  Well, let's see:  Pep rallies and zany competitions all week?  Yep.  Football games under the lights?  For sure.  Marching bands and cheerleaders?  Check.  A parade of floats hand-crafted by students?  Absolutely.  Crowning of the Homecoming king and queen and their court?  So true.  Lots of great food and  carnival games and booths and other attractions?  Yes, yes and yes.  Raffle with a huge prize?  Of course.

This year's theme is "Under The...".  Seniors are "Under Cover", Juniors are "Under the Bed", Sophomores are "Under Arrest" and Freshmen are "Under the Sea".

Here's the week's schedule for students:
Monday, Oct. 12:  "Sports Dress-Up Day"; class and Homecoming Court competition at break
Tuesday, Oct. 13:  "Nerd Day"; same competitions at break
Wednesday, Oct. 14:  "Wacky Wednesday"; same competitions at break
Thursday, Oct. 15:  "Class Theme Day"; same competitions at break
Friday, Oct. 16:  "Falcon Frenzy" Homecoming Rally at 10:08 a.m. in the Gym; class lip sync competition

Carnival & Football Game ~ SVHS vs. Harbor!

Friday, October 16, the entire community is invited to join the celebration, which begins with a carnival  from 3 to 7 p.m.  Nine different school clubs will host carnival game booths to raise funds for their clubs.  Others organizations are selling food.  As of press time, we know that the drama club is selling candied apples to raise money for their trip to New York, and the sophomore class is hosting a baked potato and cotton candy booth.  Air brush tattoos, face painting, interactive games and contests and a ton of great food await students, families and guests.

Frosh Kick-off at 3:00 p.m. Vs. Terra Nova from Pacifica
Junior Varsity Vs. Harbor Pirates Kick-off at 5:00 p.m.
Varsity Vs. Harbor Pirates Kick-off at 7:00 p.m.

Thans to Granite Construction's donation of temporary lights again this year, the varsity game will be played under lights, which is a huge treat for players and fans.  Halftime activities during the Varsity game include the class floats parade and announcement of the Homecoming royalty.  Students get to show off their school - and their school spirit - to the biggest crowd of the football season.

One of the highlights will be the halftime selection of the 2009 winner of the SVHS Parent Club Raffle.  The winner will receive a truly unique and beautiful locally-crafted quilt .  Raffle tickets are still available in the SVHS Office until halftime of the varsity game for $5 each or three for $10.  The winner doesn't need to be present to win.  The Parent Club is trying to reach its goal of raising $1,000 in ticket sales to underwrite its many worthwhile projects, including funding student scholarships, discretionary funds for teachers, counselors and administrators, and academic materials for classroom use.

Homecoming 2009
is about to kick off with events to inspire a fierce sense of school spirit.  The themed dress-up days, class lip-sync, staff lip-sync, floats, pep rally, homecoming royalty court of princesses and princes, carnival at the game, football games against Harbor High and the concluding Homecoming Dance on Saturday is way more than enough to distract everyone from the mundane task of academics.  Seriously, it is a high-spirited and fun week for students and staff alike.  So visit the Falcon Gear Shack sponsored and get some fresh Falcon Maroon and Gold clothing, or dig out those spirit clothes from your closet of wardrobe.  It's time to join in the fun and cheer on the Falcons!

Drumline!  Get your Pulse Running! Or, Grab your Horn and Join in!
A revival of an old SVHS tradition is taking place, Drumline!  Music Director Kent Kurrus has been actively recruiting students to come and make some noise, beating on the snares, bass, and tom-tom drums.  Small but mighty, these volunteers will debut soon and bring another sure of excitement to the fans and athletes.
In addition, Mr. Kurrus is actively recruiting students, staff, and adults from the community to take part in a Pep Band.  Plans are to assemble musicians one hour prior to the home football games and then fill the bleachers with the sound of some home-grown music.  If you haven't played that trumpet or trombone since college or high school, but would delight in sharing with our students in how much fun joining in on the musical accompaniment can be, contact Kent Kurrus via email at [email protected].

Drop, Cover, and Hold On!  Great California ShakeOut...
On October 15, schools, businesses, and organizations all over the state will be participating in massive earthquake drill.  Each school in the district is also participating, with a coordinated and aligned earthquake drill.  The event will officially take place on 10/15 at 10:15 in most parts of the state, but due to our bell schedule, SVHS will experience it's "earthquake" about 15 minutes earlier that the rest of the state.
As a part of the comprehensive safety plan for the school, we will conduct our annual earthquake drill utilizing the resources and procedures as prescribed by the combined effort of the multi-agency sponsored event.  For more details on the event, go to:

Volunteers and Gracious Donors, THANK YOU! So typical of the Scotts Valley community, the high school staff continues to be so pleasantly appreciated by the parents and adults that contribute their money, time and ingenuity to all of our school programs.  Scotts Valley Educational Foundation (SVEF) will be hosting Oktoberfest on October 16, a fun and delicious adult gathering.  Falcon Club has been working industriously to gather volunteers for attendants to collect entrance fees, sell food and drinks, and so many other fundraisers.  Falcon Club is also the driving force in collecting the people and resources to build the donated bleachers that now adorn the visitor side of the football field.  Each athletic team is resplendent with volunteers to help do field and facility maintenance for our athletic venues, provide transportation to and from games and practices, and join the athletes in doing supervised fundraising events to support the expense of the athletic programs.  Parent Club is fundamental to providing the additional support to teachers in providing instructional supplies and all the other necessities such as tissues, hand cleanser, and wipes to help minimize the potential of H1N1 infection.  Parent Club and IB parents also contribute to supporting the funds to support and sustain the academic International Baccalaureate program.   In these very difficult economic times, we cannot express effectively how much we appreciate the support volunteers make in the delivery of all of our programs.  Thanks so Much!

Strong Interest Inventory
The Strong Interest Inventory is a career assessment tool designed to give students insights that help them find careers that fit. How? By comparing your interests to the interests of people who enjoy their jobs. The report is based on the concept that if they like their jobs, and you share the same interests, you'll likely find similar work enjoyable. Stop by the College and Career Center to take the Strong Interest Inventory online - it's only $8

Play on!
Rick Abbot brings comedy to life in the fantastic Play on! Student directed by Makayla Blackwell, assisted by Alison Weigl and Kristen Schmitt.

SYNOPSIS

This is the hilarious story by Rick Abbot of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty authoress who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show, Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is the actual performance in which anything that can go wrong does.

Play on! plays December 3, 4, 5 and 10, 11, 12. Shows are at 7:30PM in the Student Union at Scotts Valley High School, 555 Glenwood Drive in Scotts Valley Tickets will be for sale online this year!  A link to purchase will be provided soon!  Ticket prices are $5 for students and seniors, $7 general admission.  New this year!  Tickets will be sold ONLINE through www.showtix4u.com click HERE to purchase.

If you leave the Scotts Valley Unified School District or decide you absolutely must opt out of these e-mails for any reason, please e-mail Angela Marshall, School Secretary directly at the reply e-mail provided, rather than go through the "SafeUnsubscribe" process. (We've discovered this method is not so "safe.") If you unsubscribe, you will no longer receive e-mails from any school within the District, or e-mails from the District itself. You opt out of every Scotts Valley School if you select this method, and opting you back in is not an easy process. Please e-mail Angela if you want to remove yourself from a list or need to update an e-mail address. It's easier that way, and we are happy to make any necessary changes. Thanks so much.
