Federal FY11 Budget Update (March 4, 2011)
  • Congress passes continuing resolution without workforce cuts
  • FY 2011 federal budget funded until March 18, 2011
  • Further cuts are possible, and your calls are still needed

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your advocacy over the past week on the continuing resolution (CR) voted on by the U.S. Congress. We wanted to give you a quick update and encourage you to continue advocating on behalf of job training and placement programs.

For Now, Good News
Congress passed and the President signed a two-week continuing resolution this week that cuts about $4 billion from the FY 2011 budget (much less than the $61 billion in cuts originally passed by the House).

All funding for job placement and training programs remains intact in this CR.

Coming Up, Another Battle
Congress can still vote to eliminate funding for job training and placement programs for FY11.   That's because this spending bill only goes through March 18, and then a new bill must be passed.

The White House has invited House and Senate leaders to meet and finalize FY 2011 appropriations. If they cannot reach an acceptable compromise, we may be looking at another short-term CR - or a series of them - that could include additional funding cuts. At this point, we should assume that the $3.8 billion in workforce cuts proposed in the House's bill are still on the table.

Take Action Today

All calls are important, but calls and letters from businesses are especially critical to making clear the value of workforce training and placement programs to employers.

We urge you to contact your business partners about speaking up in support of job training and placement programs.
  • If you have 2 minutes: Call Senator Brown and Senator Kerry.  Say "I don't want to see cuts to the Workforce Investment Act or other job training programs under any future continuing resolution."

Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,
