Dear Friends,
Please call Senator Scott Brown TODAY at (202) 224-4543 and ask him to support the Murray-Kerry Amendment to Senate Jobs Bill (Amendment 3356).
Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Senator John Kerry (D-MA) have offered an amendment to the jobs bill currently being considered by the Senate
that would: -
Provide $1.3 billion for grants to states under
the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) for youth activities, including summer
employment; and
-
Extend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF) Emergency Fund through March 31, 2011, and provide an additional $1.3
billion to support subsidized employment and other activities under this
program.
The Senate is expected to vote on this amendment as early as today (Tuesday, March 9), so please take
action now!
Due to budget rules, the amendment needs 60 votes to pass. SkillWorks has also learned that an alternative amendment may be introduced that
could undercut these critical investments. It is vitally important that
Members of Congress continue to hear from the workforce development field that
job training is a key component of any jobs bill.
Subsidized work programs such as those supported by Summer Youth, the TANF
Emergency Fund, and on-the-job training (OJT) are critical to ensuring that all
workers can obtain the skills they need to take advantage of new job
opportunities, and employers can find the skilled workforce they need to grow
and compete. Please
weigh in with Senator Brown today at (202) 224-4543 and ask him to support the
Murray-Kerry amendment and to reject any amendment that might be offered as an
alternative. Thank you for your efforts. We appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Loh-Sze Leung Director SkillWorks: Partners for a Productive Workforce
