Notes from the Farm
Hi Folks,

We have quite a few new Folks signed up for "Notes From The Farm" this Fall, many of them from Cape Ann. So, to all you new readers, we bid you welcome!

CAPE ANN FARMERS' MARKET
Arrowhead has been fortunate enough to participate in The Cape Ann Farmers' Market this season. A wonderful Market and Stage Fort Park is a wonderful spot to spend a Summer afternoon. We've had fun.

But, boo hoo, this Thursday is the last market until next Summer. If you have Farmers' Market or WIC Coupons, this is your last opportunity to use them----so bring them along, we love to get coupons.

This week, in addition to the usual Apples, Cider and Cider Donuts, we will have fresh from the Farm Shiitaki Mushrooms and maybe a few of the last berries of the season. Hope to see you at the Market!

IN THE SHARES THIS WEEK
We will likely have Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Celery, All Blue Potatoes, Brussels Sprouts Crowns, Delicata, Butternut and Honey Nut Squashes, Tatsoi, Arugula, Mixed Baby Greens, Portuguese Cabbage--aka Biera, Apples, plenty of fresh Herbs for cutting and enough Flowers to cut for one more nice Summer Bouquet.

We will also have fresh Shiitaki Mushrooms available for purchase at the Farm this week. Hope to see you at the Farm.

AT THE NEWBURYPORT FARMERS' MARKET
This week should see plenty of those great Summer Heirloom Tomatoes---still at least twenty different varieties, Also those wonderful Adriatic Sweet Peppers, Celery, Leeks, Brussels Sprouts Crowns (link for recipe), Portuguese Cabbage, Delicata and Honey Nut Squash, Herbs, Apples and maybe a few last Raspberries and Blackberries.

And just so you know, the price of all the different small Tomatoes will be going up 75 cents in order to cover the extra cost of picking the last----hard to find-----fruits if the season. Sorry about that.

Hope to see you at the Market.

RED RANGER CHICKEN SHARES
These Free Range Birds will be ready to go to the Butcher next week so you should order your Share this week. Single, Double and Triple Bird Shares are available. Price is $6.75, $6.50 and $6.25 per pound, respectively. Send me an e-mail to reserve yours to pick up NEXT week. Thank you.

HONEY, THE AMERICANS SHRANK THE APPLE TREES
My son, Justin, sent me this link to a very interesting article on WBUR about apple trees. For those interested in how their food is produced this is something you must read and I urge you to do so. Thought I'd pass it along to you.

WHAT WE PLANTED THIS WEEK
In the Field:   The last planting of Radishes, Tatsoi, lettuce and Bok Choy for the season.

In the Solar Greenhouses:   Tatsoi, Arugula, Lettuces, Spinaches, Kales, Chards, Leeks, Mizuna and about fifteen other Asian Greens----all for the Mid Winter Share. Steve also seeded the first Spinach for the Early Spring Share, which will be transplanted to the Solar Greenhouses next month to over-winter.

And in the Heated Greenhouses:    A few Calendulas and Pansies to brighten up the Mid Winter Share.

Next week the winter cover crops will start going in.

AND IT IS TIME............
To sign up for the Mid Winter Share which runs January, February and March. The price of this Share is $390---up $30 from last year to offset higher fuel prices. Payment plans are available. Please send me an email, or stop by the Farm or the NFM (Newburyport Farmers' Market) with a check. Thank you. Also there are a few shares for the Late Season Share---November and December--- available.

I feel as though I have written a long advertisement to get you to send money. But as I said last week, the idea behind CSA is for members to pay up front for the cost of crop production.

The seasons have changed since Robert Frost Farmed and wrote here in New England, so it is often hard to choose the right poem for the season. That's the case right now. So, I will leave you with one of the great Yankee Farmer/Poet's simplest and timeless pieces---The Pasture. Hope you enjoy it.

Cheers,
Dick Chase

THE PASTURE
I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;
I'll only stop to rake the leaves away
(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):
I sha'n't be gone long.-You come too.

I'm going out to fetch the little calf
That's standing by the mother. It's so young,
It totters when she licks it with her tongue.
I sha'n't be gone long.-You come too.
