New Carrots in #6 Greenhouse
Notes From the Farm
Hi Folks!

It's time to sign up for the Late Season Share. This is everyone's favorite Share, distributed in November and December and includes extras for Thanksgiving and the Holidays. The vegetable crops included in this Share are listed in the next paragraph, and we will also have a different variety of Heirloom Apples each week.

This week and next we are planting a lot of crops in the Fields, for the Late Season Share. These crops include Spinach, Bok Choy, Arugula, Assorted Baby Lettuces, Chinese Cabbage, Turnips, Rutabagas, Broccoli Sessantina, Spigarello, Radishes, Green Onions, Mesclun Mixes and Braising Mixes along with Misuna, Tatsoi and other Asian Greens. Crops planted last Spring and currently growing for the Last Season Share include plenty of Kale, Leeks, Winter Squashes, Celery, Kohlrabi, Brussels Sprouts and New England Sugar Pie Pumpkins. We are also growing four different varieties of carrots in Compost Beds in the #6 Greenhouse---please see banner picture above. Stop by and take a peek at the baby carrot rows.

This looks to be a tremendous Share and NOW is time to sign up. One of the most important aspects of Community Supported Agriculture is that the Members pay for their Shares in advance to provide the Farm with the funds necessary to grow the crop. You may sign up using your credit card through the Website links to PayPal, or better yet, just stop by the Farm on Saturday from 11 to 3 with cash or a check. A full Late Season Share is $300, and a Small Late Season Share is $200. You may also sign up at the Newburyport Farmers' Market on Sunday from 9 to 1. Don't miss out on this fun and bountiful Share.
Its Still Dry!
Many of the cool weather crops listed above were also planted in March as part of the Early Spring Share. We tilled and planted in a cloud of dust then, and had to irrigate heavily. And this week we are tilling and planting in a cloud of dust and will need to irrigate heavily. Last week's showers provided almost two inches of rain, but prior to that we have to look back to June the 2nd for the last nice rain. That means ten weeks with no meaningful rain. These well drained Merrimac Soils which we plant at Arrowhead require at least 1.25 inches of water each week at the height of the growing season so we have a deficits of 12 inches so far this Summer---with another month still to go. So. despite last week's rain, we are tilling in dust and irrigating heavily (and dreaming of a good rainy day).

How About a Contest?
The photo to the right shows a small box of seeds for the Mid Winter Share. This is also a wonderful Share where you get to preview Spring every week in the Farm's Greenhouses all Winter long. You may also sign up for this Share now as well---please visit the website

Here is the contest: The reader who most closely guesses the cost of this small box of seed will win a Full Late Season Vegetable Share. One hint---the seed that we plant for Winter crops is relatively inexpensive. So send me an email with your best guess. A winner will be chosen on August 31st. You may also enter your guess at the Newburyport Farmers' Market this Sunday from 9a to 1p, or at The Cape Ann Farmers' Market this coming Thursday from 3p to 6:30p. The Seed Box will be on display at both locations. Good luck!
Cheers,
