Hi Folks!

Crops are growing well in this warm weather. The Summer Crops are coming in nicely and we will start planting the Fall and Winter Share Crops this weekend. If you would like to help with the planting Saturdays, send me an e-mail or just show up between 11 and 3. We always enjoy having an extra pair of hand stop by.

Next Saturday, the 18th, we will do a crop tour at noon. We will walk and talk our way through the plantings---sampling a few things as we go. At Arrowhead we use no sprays, so we can taste things right in the fields. And I'll try to answer your questions as best I can. Save the date, all are welcome---you need not be a CSA Member to join the tour. And be sure to bring the Young Folks.

And on Sunday, the 19th, The Newburyport Farmers' Market will celebrate Tomato Season with some special doings. Be sure to check the NFM website.
Romano Gold Beans
Tender & Delicious
Romano Gold Beans

These bright yellow beans are Italian Heirlooms, passed down through Italian Families for centuries. Although the beans look over-grown they most assuredly are not. Once you taste these fat podded beauties you will see what I mean----I'll bet you have never eaten a bean with this much flavor.

And we have plenty of them right now. CSA Members will find them included in their Share this week and will have the opportunity to pick extras for freezing or just to pig out on them!.

Farmers' Market shoppers will be able to purchase these extra delicious favorites priced at $4 per pound. Don't miss out---this is a short season crop.

Note from Paula - try these beans sauteed in olive oil with a little garlic and a touch of rosemary - mmmmm
And Speaking of Pigging Out
The piggies are growing fast!

It's time to sign up for your Pork Shares. Our pigs are growing and more will be arriving next week. Please send an email for details of the Pork Share. All of Arrowhead's Livestock are raised without hormones, anti-biotics or feed additives. Just the way my Grandfather Charlie Moulton raised his Livestock a century ago. And the flavor says it all.
Green & Gold Zucchini
Or Both If You Can't Choose

Plenty of extra Zucchinis this week. CSA Members may help themselves to extras for Zucchini Bread Pickles or Muffins. They will also be available at The Newburyport Farmers' Market. Also put some away for Winter use---simply shred raw, pat dry with clean towels (paper towels work great), measure into convenient size freezer bags and pop in the freezer. Great in the Winter for making Zucchini Bread, Soups, Casseroles, etc.Hint: The larger Zucchinis freeze best

Zucchini Bread/Muffins

3 eggs

2 cups sugar

1 cup oil (or ½ cup oil and ½ cup applesauce)

3 teaspoons Vanilla

3 cups flour

3 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon baking powder

2 cups grated raw zucchini

Preheat oven to 350°. Beat eggs in large bowl for 5 minutes, or until pale and thickened. Mix dry ingredients together in another bowl and set aside. Prepare two loaf pans or five mini-loaf pans.

Slowly add sugar to the eggs and continue beating. On slow speed, add oil and vanilla. Gently mix in zucchini. Fold in dry ingredients until all moistened and pour into prepared pans, level each carefully. Bake for 1 hour in loaf pans or 30 minutes in min-loaf pans

Pickling Cucumbers
Bread & Butter or Dill Pickles?
CSA at Arrowhead Logo

Also plentiful this week are "Calypso" Heirloom Cucumbers for making pickles or relish Some of these have become over-sized in this hot weather, but they would make great pickle spears. CSA Members may have all that they need for pickling. These will also be available at The Market on Sunday.

Paula's Bread & Butter Pickle Slices

6 lbs. pickling cucumbers

3 lbs. yellow onions

2 large green peppers, chopped

3 garlic cloves, whole

½ cup kosher or pickling salt

Slice cucumbers, pepper and onions into ¼" slices. Mix vegetables together along with the whole garlic cloves. Sprinkle with salt, cover with cracked ice and let stand for 3 to 4 hours, replenishing the ice as needed. Rinse and drain well, and remove the garlic cloves.

Make a syrup of:

5 cups white sugar

3 cups cider or white vinegar

1 tbl turmeric

1½ tbl celery seed

2 tbl mustard seed

Boil syrup for 5 minutes. Add the vegetables and bring to full, rolling boil and remove from heat. Spoon hot mixture into prepared jars and seal. Process in hot water bath for 10 minutes. Makes about 8 pints.

Approximately 8 pints

Stone Fruits
Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Cherries
Ripe Peaches

Are collectively known as Stone Fruits because of the stony seeds inside. We have a great crop of Peaches and Nectarines this year. We let our fruit ripen as much as possible right on the tree and we use NO Fungicide sprays that deter spoilage after harvest. In light of the above, and the hot weather we are enjoying this Summer, we recommend that you refrigerate your fruit as soon as you get home and eat within a few days. This week's CSA Share will consist of both Peaches and Nectarines, and both will be available at The Newburyport Farmers' Market on Sunday from 9 to 1 and at The Cape Ann Farmers' Market on Thursday from 3 to 6:30. Enjoy these wonderful, tree-ripened Summer fruits while they are here.
Free Range Chicken
A True Taste Treat
Rotisserie Chicken

The Free Range Red Ranger Chickens are ready to pick up at the Farm this week, if you have signed up for a Share. If you have not signed up yet, a few Shares are still available. Please send me an email if you would like a Chicken Share. Price is $6.75 per pound and these birds will be the center-piece of any meal.  Everyone who has tasted these chickens has responded with "WOW!". Send that email today and don't miss out.
Hope to see you at the Farm or the Market this weekend.

BE SURE TO TAKE TIME TO ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL SUMMER.

Cheers,
Dick Chase
