Tin Hut: Symbol of connection to sister church

Three members of Hope Covenant Church built an entire home inside the congregation's building.

Hope Hut
Actually, it is a full-scale replica of a hut in Ethiopia and is made of little more than old wood and corrugated steel. It is an educational tool and reminder of the church's commitment to their sister congregation, the Evangelical Mekane Yesus Church, located in the town of Fiche.

'Mission Friends: The Next Chapter' chosen as meeting theme

It's that time of year again. Time to begin selecting delegates and making plans to attend the Northwest Conference Annual Meeting, which will take place at Crossview Covenant Church in North Mankato, April 28-30.

The meeting's events are open to all who wish to attend, and you won't want to miss the worship celebrations and leadership workshops being offered this year.

Mark your calendars now and be on the lookout for the 2011 NWC Annual Meeting brochure/poster in the coming weeks.

Next two Call-In Cafes to focus on special needs

Amy Rapada, a member of the Covenant Disabilities Resource Committee, will facilitate Call-in Cafés in January and February that will discuss issues concerning ministry to people with special needs and their families.

Dates and times for two events are:

  • January 27 - "Enabling the Disabled Learner at Church"; begins at 2:30 p.m. (CST)
  •  February 24 - "How to Control Disruptive Behaviors in a Children's Ministry Setting"; begins at 2:30 p.m. (CST)

Participation is free, but registration is requested and can be completed online.

Rapada is the author of "The Special Needs Ministry Handbook: A Church's Guide to Reaching Children with Disabilities and Their Families," who helped establish a successful ministry at Pine Lake Covenant Church. Rapada also is the Evangelical Covenant Church's representative to the National Council of Churches Committee on Disabilities.

The Department of Christian Formation sponsors the Call-in Café.

"Some people have said that families with special needs are one of the largest unreached people groups," says Steve Burger, director of children, adult, and family ministries for the department. Many families do not attend church because there is no ministry available to them. Burger adds that serving families who have members with a disability is a biblical requirement, more possible than people might think, and ultimately rewarding for everyone involved.

NWC Church Resource Bank

One great feature of the new Northwest Conference website is our ability to connect churches with specific needs, with those who have resources to share. The site features a "Church Resource Bank," and our vision for this page is that churches with items or resources (e.g. curriculum, equipment, other assets) they no longer have need for would post them for those who might find the resources helpful.

If you think your church has something to share, please email What's Available, Church Name, a Brief Description, and Contact Information, to Cheryl at the Northwest Conference office.

If your church has a need, remember to check back often for new postings.
