Team from Edina Covenant faces turmoil, treats cholera in Haiti

On Nov. 14, Edina Covenant Church sent a group of 10 people to Haut-Limbe, Haiti, to serve at the Ebenezer medical clinic. The team encountered many unexpected challenges due to the recent cholera outbreak as well as the civil unrest and rioting between the Haitians and the UN. Christmas 2010
Christmas greetings from your Northwest Conference staff!

We are overwhelmed by the gift of the Christ-child. God loved the world so much that He gave us His very best, His only Son! We are the recipients of the greatest gift that anyone could imagine.

William Willimon reminds us, "the Christmas story, the one according to Luke not Dickens, is not about how blessed it is to give, but how essential it is to see ourselves as receivers."

We join with you in praising God for this incredible gift. Glory to God in the highest!

In His service and yours, Jim, Mark, Jon, Mike, Cheryl and Bryan

There once was a world

by Peter L. Steinke

There once was a world where the church functioned according to what some have called the "attractional" model (others have named it the participatory model). People come to a place, consume the spiritual goods, and serve as patrons to "meet the budget." But a shift has happened. North American culture has taken new turns.

Christendom refers to a period of time when the Christian faith profoundly informed the culture. And, in turn, the culture carried the traditions, symbols, and rituals of the Christian faith. Another often-used term-post-Christian era-captures the reality that the importance and influence of Christianity in North American society has been in decline for at least three decades. In a "post-Christian" world, the church cannot expect favorable treatment or higher visibility.

One could say that a gathering storm-a confluence of factors-has assailed the church and its dominant perch on the societal ladder. None of this has to do with the church's internal functioning. The sea change is external or contextual. There once was a world that was eager to be hospitable to Christian churches and supported "blue laws," soccerless Sundays, eating fish rather than meat on Friday, public prayer in schools and at nodal events, deferring to clergy by way of discounts, weekly religion sections in urban newspapers, and greeting others with "Merry Christmas." Now, suddenly, with steep changes happening in our society, congregations have to ask themselves whether they are responding to a world that no longer exists.

 CONVERGE 2010 recap
Pastors and lay leaders equipped at CONVERGE

Despite the largest November snowstorm in 19 years, 90 people braved the elements to attend the first NWC CONVERGE event at Roseville Covenant Church in Roseville, MN on Nov. 13.

"As NWC staff, we were amazed at the number of people who braved the elements and still participated in CONVERGE-in spite of the weather and road conditions. We look forward to repeating many of these same workshops, with some helpful modifications, at our NWC Annual Meeting in Mankato in April," said Mark Stromberg, NWC associate superintendent. "We believe that providing these practical workshops can be of great assistance to our churches, as it allows us to lean into our NWC mission of empowering and equipping healthy missional leaders."

The one-day leadership training event featured workshops designed to equip church leaders in a variety of areas. Workshops at Converge included: "Effective Church Finances," "Developing a Powerful Communications Strategy for Your Church," "MissionInsite," "How to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Church Programs," "Church Constitutions and Local Church Governance," "Exploring Community Mission: Reaching Your Jerusalem," and "KidShift: It's a New Day for Children & Family Ministry in Today's Effective Church."

Get more out of your church brochures

By Bryan Malley

Here are a few ways to get more out of your church brochures (from churchmarketingstinks.com):
  • Less words. Cut your copy by a third.
  • Follow the writing rules for busy people (headers, bulleted lists, etc.)
  • Use testimonies from real people with real photos.
  • Did we mention real photos? Ditch the stock photography and clip art and use real photos from your church. The authenticity gained is worth the price/effort.
  • Make it remarkable enough that people will show their friends. Now there's a concept-a church brochure that people talk about. How do you do it? Be funny. Be helpful. Be insightful. Be interesting. Be something no other church brochure is.
  • Show, don't tell. Telling me you have a fun and exciting children's ministry isn't going to work.
  • Leave them wanting more. The point is for people to check out your church or your ministries or whatever your brochure is hyping. So make sure they want more: either they need to know more information, or it's so cool they have to check it out.
  • Before it's done, share it with others and get some feedback. An outside perspective can do wonders.

Church tax deadlines

As the calendar months roll over and become a new year there are some tasks church financial leaders need to accomplish. Following are the most common tax-related details and deadlines to keep the church in good standing with governing authorities.

By December 31, 2010
2011 Housing Allowance designation
The church's governing board (Board, Council, Leadership Team, Elder Board, etc.) needs to pass a resolution stating the amount of clergy compensation that will be considered housing allowance in 2011. Use your favorite Internet search engine looking for "Sample Housing Allowance Resolution" for appropriate wording. Ministers who live in parsonages are not excluded from taking advantage of a housing allowance.

Employee or contractor?
Review the employment status of employees and contractors for 2011. Whether someone is paid as an employee or contractor is NOT dependent on how much you might pay him or her in a year or the system that is easiest to implement but on who has control over how the work is done. For help in determining employment status look at www.irs.gov; search on "employee or contractor."

NWC videos

Video series highlights ministry priorities of the NWC

The Northwest Conference recently released a series of video segments designed to highlight ministry priorities of the conference, including: "Congregational Vitality," "Church Planting" and "Children, Youth & Family." Each video features interview segments with NWC staff, lay leaders and pastors-intermixed with photos and video footage from the churches highlighted-telling stories of how the conference has influenced and aided ministry on the local level.

The videos are designed for use throughout the year in church new member classes, services and other adult education opportunities to help congregations better understand and engage the work of the Northwest Conference.

Each church's delegates left the NWC 2010 Annual Meeting with a DVD copy of the videos. Because of the range of DVD players and technologies available in our churches, we are aware that the DVD copies may not work perfectly in all instances.

The series is currently available on the new NWC web site's video page. The videos are also available in even higher definition on Vimeo (click here) and this would be the ideal source for streaming the series in your church or group.
