Virtual Community
by Carol Howard Merritt
My pastoral care professor in seminary instructed us to meet each member in his or her home during our first year at a new church. It was sound advice at the time. But there has been a change, a deep and abiding shift my good professor could not foresee. In a rapidly evolving culture, people are no longer home during office hours. The church can no longer expect moms to host Bible studies in their living rooms at 10:00 am every Tuesday. And if a pastor visits unannounced, he or she will probably be greeted on the front steps, and will remain there, standing, for the quick duration of the call. In just a few short years, pastoral visits have changed dramatically, along with all of our communication.
I remember when it started. Seventeen years ago, my husband was working at Sam's Club, in the computer department. He came home one day talking about the "information superhighway" and how everyone would soon be doing their Christmas shopping from home.
"Really?" I asked, not quite believing it. "That's so Jetsons."

Communications Corner Is good communication important for churches?
By Bryan Malley Recently, I've been tasked by the NWC to create and share a presentation called "Developing a Powerful Communications Strategy for Your Church." Once the ideas began flowing, it wasn't too hard for me to come up with boatloads of advice to share with the audience. But in my preparations, I felt it was important to start at the beginning and ask, "Is good communication important for churches?" After all, many churches have survived this long without any kind of communications strategy. What makes church communications effective can be very different than what makes secular communications effective. For example, what might seem from purely secular design standards, poorly designed and executed communications created on outdated technology, CAN be used by God's grace to help people come to know Jesus, to heal hurting hearts, and help people grow in Christian maturity. That being said, God also uses beautifully designed and carefully crafted communications to achieve the same results, and it is pleasing to the Lord to grow in the wise use of those skills. Here are a few reasons that today's churches need to spend more time and money on communications. - It's no longer enough to have a nice building in a visible spot in town. Whether you realize it or not, you are competing for people's attention because of the proliferation of media in our society.
- Related to that, this is the age of Communication Technology. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users. TV reached 50 million users in just 13 years. The internet? Just 4 years to reach 50 million users.
- Young people are conditioned by the media. And I don't know of a single church that doesn't want more young people.
- Because we are all media saturated to some degree, churches must keep themselves in front of people on a consistent, professional basis to gain interest and build participation.
I look forward to sharing more of the presentation with those who attend my workshop at CONVERGE on Nov. 13 at Roseville Covenant Church.

Video series highlights ministry priorities of the NWC
The Northwest Conference recently released a series of video
segments designed to highlight ministry priorities of the conference,
including: "Congregational Vitality," "Church Planting" and "Children, Youth
& Family." Each video features interview segments with NWC staff, lay
leaders and pastors-intermixed with photos and video footage from the churches
highlighted-telling stories of how the conference has influenced and aided ministry
on the local level. The videos are designed for use throughout the year in
church new member classes, services and other adult education opportunities to
help congregations better understand and engage the work of the Northwest
Conference. Each church's delegates left the NWC 2010 Annual Meeting
with a DVD copy of the videos. Because of the range of DVD players and
technologies available in our churches, we are aware that the DVD copies may
not work perfectly in all instances. The series is currently available on the new NWC web site's
video page.
The videos are also available in even higher definition on Vimeo (click here)
and this would be the ideal source for streaming the series in your church or
group.
