Making Where We Live, Work and Play Heart Safe |
|
Thank you to the exceptional employees of the City of Ocoee Fire and Police Departments for their commitment, dedication and support in making where we live, work and play, heart safe. Fire Engineer Carl Curtis and Officers Jamie Byrd and Michelle Tillman have trained over 225 adults and youth in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use in the schools and other facilities where SYH has placed AEDs. SYH proudly recognized their dedication with a special awards ceremony during the April 7 City Commission meeting. It is through this spirit of collaboration that heart safe communities are built.

Legislation Update |
|

At the national level, S.1197- Josh Miller Helping Everyone Access Responsive Treatment in Schools Act of 2009 or the Josh Miller HEARTS Act was introduced on June 8, 2009, by Senator George Voinovich (R-OH). The bill was referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
The Josh Miller HEARTS Act would establish a grant program to assist with funding for placement of automated external defibrillators in elementary and secondary schools.
In response to a Call-to-Action by Parent Heart Watch, the national voice protecting youth from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death, SYH sent a letter to Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) on behalf of 10 year old Sean Anderson and the thousands of youths whose voices have been silenced by sudden cardiac arrest, urging him to co-sponsor this important bill. |

Let's Talk A-E-D... |
|
With the start of school quickly approaching and sports leagues soon to be in full swing, it's a great time to check how well-prepared your child's school, sports league and sports venue are when it comes to responding to a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
First and foremost, find out if the facilities are equipped with an automated external defibrillator (AED), CPR & AED trained personnel and/or volunteers and an Emergency Action Plan.
The AED(s) should be:
- Operational; with a)working battery, and b) adult & pediatric electrodes
- Publicly accessible.
- Properly identified with a three dimensional sign that can be viewed from every angle.
- Registered with the County EMS Medical Director's Office. Public schools that are members of the Florida Athletic Association are required per F.S. 1006.165 to register their AED(s).
- Also, any person or entity in possession of an AED is encouraged to notify local EMS of its location per F.S. 401.2915.
If AED is relocated, please remember to notify the EMS Medical Director's Office of its new location.
