Heart of it All
Greetings!

Now that the ghosts, ghouls and goblins are in hiding for another year, with Halloween behind us, we turn the page to November and preparations for the two busy months ahead for us all.

Helping to dull the pain of the inevitable winter weather soon to arrive is the anticipation of Santa Claus parades and holiday parties on the calendar for our communities.

As we are heading into the 'season of giving' the Foundation will soon be reaching out to everyone in the community again to ask for your continued generosity with the return of our Gift of Health campaign. Look for more on that in the next edition of our Community Giving e-newsletter.

But this week, please enjoy reading about the many recent activities of the amazing people and groups that support the Foundation and its mission. We are truly grateful for all of your support and we are excited to be able to share some of the stories and pictures of this work with you here.

Best regards,

Chad Hanna,
President & CEO, RVHS Foundation

Together, Shirley Rowlands, left, and Bev Carmichael, President of the Auxiliary, hold a photo album of the many memories collected over 60 years for the Auxiliary to Ajax and Pickering hospital.
Auxiliary celebrate 60 wonderful years

On Sunday, October 30, more than 150 members and community friends celebrated the volunteers of the Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital and their 60 years of having supported their community hospital with an afternoon tea.

"The Auxiliary and the hospital are two parts of one whole," says Bev Carmichael, President of the Auxiliary. "We are so proud of the dedication the hundreds of volunteers have provided to local health care over those 60 years and we are excited to be able to celebrate this milestone with an event that  brings together many of those volunteers, past and present."

Centenary volunteers bazaar is Nov. 4 and annual raffle kicks off the same day

Rouge Valley Centenary's volunteers are offering up unique holiday season gifts for sale at their Annual Bazaar on Friday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All funds raised go toward the purchase of hospital equipment. For example, the volunteers recently bought a new ear-nose-and-throat chair for use in the emergency department. Handmade woodwork, new and used items, plus baked goods are all part of the festive annual event. Parking is free to anyone purchasing an item at the bazaar.

Plus there's the annual raffle for three prizes: a handcrafted wooden chest filled with new items worth more than a $1,000; a chocoholic basket; and a Nikon Coolpix camera.

Raffle tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and are for sale until Friday, Dec. 9, in the front lobby or the volunteer office.

RVHS welcomes new doctors

As the communities surrounding Rouge Valley Health System's two hospital campuses in east Toronto and west Durham Region continue to grow, so do their medical needs.

"We are pleased to welcome our latest physicians to our team at RVHS. We look forward to the contributions that they will make to our already dynamic and outstanding group of physicians," says Dr. Naresh Mohan, chief of staff.

Radiologist Dr. Steve Gazzola will see patients at both RVHS hospital campuses. Trained in diagnostic imaging, he has also obtained additional training in bone radiology and has a special interest in sports medicine. Radiologist Dr. James Woo: In addition to his radiology expertise, Dr. Woo also brings subspecialty experience in cardiac computed axial tomography (CT) and cardiac MRI. New pathologist, Dr. Soran Abdulkarim, will be working at both RVHS hospital campuses and has a special interest in the diagnosis of gynecological malignancies. New general internist Dr. Siarhei Slizheuski, will be, to date, primarily based at Rouge Valley Centenary. While he will be focusing on general internal medicine patients, he hopes to focus more on geriatric patients in the future.

Foundation VP shares her personal account of surviving breast cancer

A few years ago, I never imagined I'd be writing a blog about being a breast cancer survivor. But here I am doing just that.

This December marks three years since I had my mastectomy. I sure didn't expect that, at age 45, after finding a lump in my breast, and after a mammography and ultrasound revealed that it was highly suspicious for breast cancer, that I'd soon have to have my breast removed. I had none of the typical risk factors for breast cancer, and I'm the first one in my family and among my friends to have a diagnosis.

It certainly was strange being on the receiving end of patient care at the place where I went to work every day. But I had faith in my colleagues, and I was also fortunate to be treated in my community hospital, so that I could be close to my husband, daughters, friends and colleagues.

FASHIONShow 2011 a chic event

On Oct. 23, fundraising chic was the hottest trend on the runway and supporting your community hospital was all the rage as FASHIONShow 2011 stepped into the spotlight at the Scarborough Town Centre (STC).

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is excited to have had the Town Centre host the 3rd Annual fashion showcase, in support of Rouge Valley Centenary hospital. This chic event was held at Centre Court and provided a look at fabulous fashions supplied by many of the STC's top retailers.

Firefighters and Foundation volunteers worked together to greet drivers and collect donations.

Firefighters' Boot Drive stops traffic

On Saturday October 29, the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation worked alongside the Pickering Professional Firefighters at their annual boot drive at various malls throughout the City of Pickering to collect funds for the Image is Everything campaign.

Last year, the Firefighters were able to raise $17,000 towards the campaign, and once again drivers who entered and exited four local malls were again generous when asked by volunteers to donate their spare change. Final totals for this year's drive will be announced in a future Community Giving eNewsletter.
