Greetings!
April showers bring May flowers. That's what we are counting on here at the Foundation this month as May arrives, and with it a very special event for the Buy a Bed campaign. Last week we braved cool temperatures and a little rain, but still had an amazing time at Albert Campbell Square when we teamed up with Centennial College's hospitality program to celebrate the campaign, using the Royal Wedding as our theme. We even had our own Will and Kate on hand! See all the photos at www.flickr.com/photos/rvhsf/sets/. Important to note is that we are now just mere weeks away from the the first ever Corporate Bed Race at Scarborough Town Centre, happening on Friday, May 27. The Foundation is very excited to partner with the Town Centre for this event and race day is going to be a great time for everyone involved. It will be run on Borough Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and spots are filling up fast, so act quickly, because there is only room for 16 teams. Our sponsors to date include, Toronto Community News, East-Ford Lincoln (pit crew), and Bell. Additional sponsorships are still available. Whether you sign up a team, sign up as a sponsor or want to come out and watch the fun and cheer on the racers, your support for this Buy a Bed campaign event is appreciated. Call 416-281-7119 or email [email protected] to inquire how you can be involved. Best regards and I look forward to seeing you on May 27, Katherine Craine, Director, Major Gifts & Special Campaigns Rouge Valley Health System Foundation

There are many aspects of our Gala that set it apart from others. We have come to expect a beautiful setting and amazing entertainment. And dinner of course, was as delicious as ever. But many people commented this year on just how enjoyable the Gala was for the personal feeling they experienced. And we have to agree 100 per cent. It may have been hearing from local musicians, with the multi-talented Mark Masri of Scarborough blowing us away with his amazing voice, or the wonderful voices of the Young Singers of Ajax. It could also have been the wonderful surprises we witnessed, with Ron and Carol Halliday announcing a personal gift of $100,000 to the Image is Everything campaign and OPG announcing its pledge of $300,000. But we think it was all that and more. It was seeing the support of so many of our hospital's medical staff on hand and the many community leaders who continue to give their support to their community hospital. Not to mention the amazing and dedicated volunteers who return each year to make the event run so smoothly. We were blessed to receive all of this support and once again, the image of an MRI at RVAP has become clearer than ever before. If you haven't already, please check out the pictures from the event at hadaball.com or the Foundation's Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/rvhsf/sets/ and read more at our blog, foundationchat.blogspot.com.

Heart of it All campaign raising funds for advanced technology for RVHS
The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation launched its newest fundraising effort on April 7th, unveiling the Heart of it All campaign, to purchase new echocardiogram machines for both Rouge Valley Health System hospitals. The Heart of it All campaign goal is to raise $500,000. The end result promises to be a much greater level of confidence for doctor and patient as the new echo machines provide the best possible clarity in images of the heart, making for a quicker and more accurate diagnosis for the patient. The launch was held in conjunction with the grand-opening of the new Cardiac Diagnostics Unit at the Ajax and Pickering site. The unit was a major part of the hospital's multi-million-dollar redevelopment completed earlier this year. The event featured an opportunity to see the unit and watch demonstrations of echocardiogram machines. Read all about the launch at foundationchat.blogspot.com. To learn more about the campaign and how you can be involved and support the effort to buy new echocardigram machines for our hospitals, visit www.heartofitall.ca or email [email protected].

McDonald's and schools team up
to support Buy a Bed campaign
Scarborough McDonald's locations have been happy hosts to school teams raising funds for the Buy a Bed campaign in recent weeks and the next is planned for tomorrow, May 3. Students, staff, teachers and parents from Sacred Heart Catholic School were at McDonald's at Malvern Town Centre on April 4 and raised $510 for the campaign. It was a school fundraising night for students, staff, teachers and parents from Scarborough's St. Dominic Savio Catholic School at the Kingston and Port Union roads location of McDonald's, on March 28. Everyone had a fun time raising funds to support the Foundation's Buy a Bed campaign at Rouge Valley Centenary. Tomorrow's school event is at the Malvern Town Centre McDonald's location where St. Columba Catholic School will be collecting donations. On May 18 St. Gabriel Catholic School will be supporting the campaign at the Malvern location as well. The school fundraising events are a result of a partnership between the Toronto Catholic District School Board, McDonald's owner Dale Bartlett and RVHSF.

Mittman Carriers get race beds moving
When it came time to get Buy a Bed race beds to their race course destination last year, these heavy beds proved to be a bit of a problem. But not once Mittman Carriers got involved. Their help made it possible to participate in the Highland Creek Heritage Festival in 2010. This year they have teamed up with the Buy a Bed Campaign officially as a sponsor to move the beds for events like the Scarborough Town Centre corporate bed races coming up on May 27. Learn more about the event or sign up a team by visiting www.buyabed.ca.

Strategic plan maps hospital's future
Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) has completed its 2011 - 2014 strategic plan with robust participation from community members, patients, staff, physicians and volunteers.
The new plan outlines the hospital's strategic focus on patient needs, program improvements and measuring its progress in a variety of health care services. The new RVHS plan carries on from the previous three-year plan maintaining the same mission, vision and values for both of its hospital campuses.
The plan states the strategic directions for all areas of the hospital in order to:
- Provide the best care possible to patients;
- Build a hospital system that better meets the needs of its diverse communities; and
- Strengthen the hospital to live its vision to be 'the best at what we do' everyday for patients and their families.
The content of the final strategic plan was created as a result of information collected during almost a year of consultations with community members, political leaders, RVHS Board members, the Community Advisory Group, staff, physicians and volunteers.
