Greetings!
This is an exciting time for the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation, as we count down the days to the grand opening of the redeveloped Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus. After many years of hard work and dedication, the community will gather in the beautiful new east lobby entrance to celebrate the culmination of its efforts to bring these new and newly renovated facilities to west Durham. It would be difficult to name all who made this possible, but please know that we appreciate every single effort made by the hundreds of individuals, groups business organizations and community leaders who contributed over the course of the Vital Signs and Vital Links Campaigns. Your fundraising and volunteer efforts to support the redevelopment were countless and so very instrumental in overcoming the many challenges Rouge Valley faced at the start of this important and necessary process. Please read more details about the event below in 'Hospital News'. We hope you will be able to join us on Feb. 17 or take time when you are able to visit the hospital and see the fine results of your efforts. Sincerely, Chad HannaPresident & CEO RVHS Foundation

Official opening for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital redevelopment is Feb. 17
After years of planning, construction and fundraising, the community of west Durham is now set to celebrate the official opening of the redeveloped Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) hospital campus. To see that vision finally come to fruition will mean a lot to this community. As west Durham continues to grow, so will our ability to provide quality care, close to home," says Jay Kaufman, chair of the Board of Directors of RVHS. The opening - The event takes place at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at RVAP, 580 Harwood Ave. South, Ajax, in the new Harwood Bistro, located on the ground level of the east wing. RVC volunteers had fun last spring rolling out their pledge to raise $50,000 for the Buy a Bed Campaign. They reached that goal last month, quicker than expected.

Volunteers reach $50,000 goal in support of Buy a Bed Campaign
A little less than a year ago, members of the Rouge Valley Centenary Volunteer Services got into bed with the RVHS Foundation, teaming up to support the Buy a Bed Campaign. Their mission looked steep, pledging to raise $50,000 to help buy desperately needed new beds for the hospital, but they were confident they could meet the challenge.
So not surprisingly, thanks to successful fundraising events over the holidays, last month the volunteers put the pledge to bed by reaching their goal quicker than expected. It is a feat volunteer manager Bonnie Hughson marvels at.
"I think it's absolutely fantastic," she says. "People don'ty know how much work they put into this. I'm always so proud of them, they do such a great job."
Volunteer Services Financial Officer Ed Banks explains that indeed, they were not surprised to reach their goal quicker than expected.
"I knew we were going to make that $50,000 and I thought that it would come a little earlier," he says. "We had a great bazaar in November and mini-bazaar in December, along with the Christmas chest raffle."
A special thanks to the 400-plus volunteers who together make Centenary better every day with their efforts. The RVHS Foundation appreciates their continued support and this contribution to the Buy a Bed Campaign helps us get closer to our overall goal of 100 new beds.

Ajax Lions know Image is Everything when it comes to an MRI
The Ajax Lions Club, continuing its long-standing support of community health care, has made a generous donation of $5,000 towards the Image is Everything campaign, to bring an MRI to the Ajax and Pickering site of the Rouge Valley Health System.
On January 26, Rouge Valley Health System Foundation staff attended a gift celebration with the Ajax Lions Club, in recognition of this meaningful contribution. This donation came about because members of the Ajax Lions Club know that many people rely on Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering for their health care. "The Ajax Lions Club has been an integral part of the Durham community, and I am very proud that we're supporting this great MRI campaign," says Bill Pinder, Director of the Ajax Lions Club. "My hope is that this Club will be one of many that will support this important project at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital." The Image is Everything Campaign is raising funds to bring an MRI to RVAP so that our families, friends and neighbours can be cared for close to home. The commitment of this local service club, to the hospital, shows the strength of the community, and that together we can make great things happen!

At its Jan. 24 Council meeting, the Town announced a $500,000 contribution to help the hospital take a big step closer to bringing an MRI to RVAP. Dr. Romas Stas, Associate Chief of Staff and Dr. Mark Prieditis, radiologist, delivered a presentation outlining the need for the state-of-the-art machine and the benefits to Ajax. Councillor Pat Brown brought forth a resolution to make the donation to support the campaign and Regional Councillor Shaun Collier seconded the motion.
The Town of Ajax has committed $500,000, in equal installments of $125,000 per year over a four-year period beginning in 2011, with funding to be sourced from the Ajax Downs Slot revenues.
On behalf of the volunteers of the Image is Everything Campaign, Chair Lucy Stocco expresses her great appreciation to the Town of Ajax for supporting the effort to bring leading-edge, health-care equipment to the community. "We are very excited to receive this commitment," says Ms. Stocco. "So many people in Ajax have already shown their support for the campaign, both financially and in volunteer activities. Through this gift, the Town has shown it shares the desire of residents to have access to the best health care possible close to home."

The Swing Shift Big Band.

A big band helping a big cause
The Swing Shift Big Band is bringing its special style of jazz to QSSIS Banquet Halls on Sunday, Feb. 13, to get you dancing and to raise funds for the 2011 To Rouge with Love annual campaign for cardiac care .
Al Minshull, President & Program Director of the Big Band Valentine's Bash, said the idea to support the RVHSF and the To Rouge with Love event came about when he realized that many residents in the Scarborough area love big band music and, at the same time many of them depend on Rouge Valley for medical services. "As a non-profit organization, the idea was to present the music and, at the same time partner with a deserving organization that people can relate to,"he explained. "If you like any kind of big band music from the big band era, including the Frank Sinatra years, you are missing something if you don't come to the concert." The 17 piece professional band and two vocalists have a large and varied repertoire of songs and tailor every concert to any type of audience. With table seating and space for dancing, the bash is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day. The band and RVHSF would like to thank events sponsors BMO Nesbitt Burns and the BMO Guildwood Branch, which have provided financial assistance to make the event possible. This year To Rouge with Love funds will support the Heart of it All campaign to purchase new echocardiogram machines for both the Ajax and Pickering and Centenary hospital sites. For more information or to purchase tickets, email Maureen Dowhaniuk, or call 905-683-2320 x1212.
