Greetings!
November has been a wonderful month for support from the communities we serve, with a number of successful events and tremendous growth for Rouge Valley Health System Foundation's important fundraising campaigns. However, along with the wonderful successes we have enjoyed, we also take a moment in this edition of Community Giving to remember a friend and colleague, Rita Galinauskas, who passed on Nov. 23. Everyone at the Foundation will greatly miss a kind and generous woman who brightened the lives of all who knew her. As the new kid on the block, please allow me to say "hello" to all of the Foundation's amazing donors, volunteers and community partners in Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Scarborough. I look forward to meeting many of you and to hearing the stories you have, for an opportunity to share them and inspire others to give and volunteer, as well.
Dave Stell, RVHSF Communications Specialist

| Remembering Rita
It is with great sadness that we tell you of the passing of a friend and longtime colleague, Rita Galinauskas.
A 20-year employee of Rouge Valley Health System and of Ajax and Pickering General Hospital, where she started with us, Rita was the manager of food and nutrition services. Many of our donors and volunteers will remember Rita for her service with the foundation during many events such as the groundbreaking at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.
The many of us who had the pleasure to work with Rita will remember her fondness for Rouge Valley, all staff, her team and for her culinary vision. Rita brought dedication, perseverance and passion to all of her accomplishments and will be greatly missed.

Doris McCarthy had passion for life
Doris McCarthy, one of Canada's finest painters, passed away this week at the age of 100. Ms. McCarthy has a special connection to the NICU at Rouge Valley Centenary, named in her honour, where we have the privilege of having one of her more unique works hanging in the Birthing Centre corridor. For more about Ms. McCarthy, read about her in this Toronto Star article.

The Mayor's Gala - An Arabian Night
It was a night of exciting entertainment, exotic tastes and great fun for the many guests of the Arabian Night-themed 6th annual City of Pickering Mayor's Gala on Nov. 20.
| Tracy Paterson of the Foundation, with Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. |
Ingrid Bergman or Humphrey Bogart wouldn't have seemed out of place at the lavishly decorated Pickering Recreation Complex, where bright colours and exotic scents welcomed guests to the rich diversity of an Arabian setting. The Mediterranean, Middle East and Indian cuisine, paired with performing acrobats and dancers was a sight that fit perfectly with the gala theme.
Proceeds from the evening were split between the Alzheimer Society of Durham, the Grandview Children's Foundation and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.
A special thank you to City of Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, Gala Chair Diana Hills Milligan and all of the volunteers and guests who made the night such a wonderful experience. To see a large collection of photos from the event, visit hadaball.com.

New books for youth waiting for care
It was a case of kids helping kids when a group of students at Valley Farm Public School held a cookie sale this fall.
Mrs. Melissa David's Grade 8 class raised money through the treats sale with the goal of purchasing books for the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. As a result, on Nov. 2 they made a donation of 15 books to staff of the hospital Foundation, books from Scholastic selected with input from all of the students. The books will be placed in the emergency department, fracture clinic and paediatric department for children to use while waiting for care.

TELUS critter sale returns
The hardworking team at TELUS have launched their annual critter sale campaign and this year Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital will be a recipient. The team has set a fundraising goal of $1,000 for the "Image is Everything" Campaign, which means a total of 285 dolphins must be sold.
| The TELUS crew have a lofty goal of raising $1,000 for the Image is Everything campaign.. |
They are asking the local community for help in making this commitment. Drop by the TELUS store at 157 Harwood Avenue North in Ajax for your Christmas shopping and help us continue to bring quality healthcare to the community. Holiday lobby displays
The lobbies of the Rouge Valley Centenary and Ajax and Pickering hospitals are decked with holly and everyone visiting the two hospital sites is now greeted by festive holiday decorations at the entrances. The beautiful Christmas trees are the result of the talents of special volunteers, the members of the Patrons' Council.Their work in the annual Gift of Health Campaign is always tremendous and we're certain you will enjoy the display the next time you visit your hospital.
As in previous years, you can also view the holiday messages from donors that are posted on the big boards.

The hospital and the Foundation teamed up to bring a float to each of the Pickering and Ajax Santa Claus parades, both held on November 13 and we are so proud to announce our "Image IS Everything" entry was selected as the President's Award recipient by the Kinsmen and Kinette Club of Pickering.
The Pickering parade was a daytime event with thousands on hand, while in Ajax the equally large crowd was treated to a well-lit evening parade. Take a look at the award-winning float in Pickering on the RVHS Photo Gallery. And then check out even more photos at the Foundation's Flickr feed. Next up, look for the Elf having his MRI again during the Whitby Santa Claus Parade, Dec. 4. Details of the parade are here at the Town of Whitby website.
