Breaking bread and barriers

On October 29, 45 school principals, social workers and administrators from the Toronto Catholic District School Board attended a luncheon served by Centennial College's School of Hospitality students and hosted by Rouge Valley Health System Foundation.

Julie Kish, Manager of the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Program at the Shoniker Clinic discussed mental health issues that are prevalent in our schools. Julie's presentation focused on identifying the resources available in the community and the importance of early detection of the signs and symptoms of students dealing with mental health issues.

Dan Koenig, of TCDSB Curriculum & Accountability Program and the Buy a Bed Committee along with Superintendent Geoff Grant both spoke on their strong support of this collaborative partnership.

Rouge Valley Centenary's Buy a Bed campaign co-chairs Paul and Janet Ainslie spoke about the campaign and gave ideas on how teachers and students can become involved in fundraising for their local hospitals, using fun activities such as bed races and pajama parties.

Finding support for both schools and hospitals reinforces the Board's mandate of creating partnerships for safe, caring, and healthy schools.

Pickering Firefighters Boot Drive 2010Boot Drive 2010
On October 23, the Pickering Professional Firefighters Association held their annual Boot Drive, in support of the Image is Everything Campaign to bring the first MRI to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.
Our amazing volunteers and firefighters had a great time fundraising for their local hospital while greeting area residents on the brisk, but sunny Fall day.
A special thank you to the area residents for their generosity of spare change and loose bills. Every penny counts! Stay tuned for details about how much they raised.

Photos from the Boot Drive can be viewed online at our Photo Gallery.

2009 Pickering Santa Claus ParadeCome walk in the Santa Claus parades
We have two more exciting volunteer opportunities!

On Saturday, November 13, the City of Pickering and the Town of Ajax hold their Santa Claus parades.

This year we have a fantastic float being built with a huge MRI on it publicizing the Image is Everything campaign. We are looking for walkers to hand out candy canes and pencils to the onlookers.
All ages are welcome!

City of Pickering
Parade route: Dixie to the Pickering Town Centre
Start time: 10 a.m.

Town of Ajax
Parade route: Bayly & McKenzie to the main library
Start time: 6 p.m.

Each parade is at least an hour and a half walk. Participants need to show up early to get in line, so the time commitment is about four hours in total.
In past year, everyone has loved the hospital float so come out and join the fun this year!

To volunteer, please contact Claudia Schwill.
Don't miss this day of music, magic and lights! It's a great way to kick off the festive season.
