Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign
Greetings!

With a summer full of beaches and barbecues, sandals and sun, we have had some amazing opportunities to get out and spend time with friends and family.

Having created so many memories for us to look back on, and now with feet firmly planted in September, we look ahead to a new season of achievements.

There are some exciting events in the coming months and we hope that you will join us in achieving our goals.

We have made significant progress towards the Buy a Bed campaign goal of 100 beds for Rouge Valley Centenary, and want you to help us make it happen.

Think of ways in which you can become involved in the upcoming season.
You can help restore comfort and health, one bed at a time. To find out more about the Buy a Bed campaign, click here.

Mayors' Golf tournament raises $150K for MRI15th Annual Mayors' Charity Golf brings it close to home
The cool breeze and clear skies of September 14 greeted golfers, volunteers and sponsors alike to the manicured hills of Deer Creek Golf and Country Club for the 15th Annual Mayors' Charity Golf Tournament.

Drawn in by their passion for golf and their local hospital, the assembly of people was an overwhelming indication of the support which would unfold.
Present were Mayors Dave Ryan and Steve Parish, Region of Durham Chairman Roger Anderson and many more political leaders, local business owners, philanthropists and golf enthusiasts.

The day was bursting with delicious food and friendly competition thanks to the support of a long list of local restauranteurs and vendors, which included live demonstrations of diagnostic imaging technology.

"Look at the corporate sponsors we've had supporting this tournament and the campaign," said Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. "It's because we have the support of local businesses. That's the reason why we can do this each year."

Thanks to the generous support of everyone in attendance, the tournament raised a net funding total of $150,000 for the Image is Everything Campaign, bringing us even closer to the first MRI to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

Legion donates poppy funds to Image is Everything CampaignSoaring with the Royal Canadian Legion
Each year, the Royal Canadian Legion dedicates their time and effort to fund raising and awareness initiatives for those in need.

In keeping with this primary purpose, the Royal Canadian Legion # 256, General Wingate Branch has made a generous donation. A gift of $1,500 from the proceeds of their 2009 poppy campaign was given to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital Image is Everything Campaign to purchase our first MRI at the Ajax and Pickering campus.

Thank you again for all of your support, in serving our community.

Scarborough Fair residents BBQ for BedsScarborough Fair residents BBQ for beds
On August 21, residents of the Scarborough Fair Condominiums opened their wallets and waistlines to support the Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign.

Lucy Perri, President of Scarbrough Fair Condominiums organized the community BBQ where she encouraged guests to open their doors to share food and friendship. As the celebrations ended, over $2,000 had been raised for the campaign.

Thanks to the generous donations of staff, the community and volunteer services, the Buy a Bed campaign has funded 40 beds towards its 100-bed goal. Through the continued support of third-party events like the BBQ, you can propel our campaign forward to restore comfort and health, one bed at a time.

Patient pays it forward
In 2000 Brian Kelly suffered a major heart attack while at a curling game in Scarborough. He was rushed to Rouge Valley Centenary for treatement, which began his relationship with the Cardiac Rehab program.

After graduating from the program as a patient, Brian was asked to volunteer and has been doing so ever since, for almost ten years.

"I was scared and thought I was the only one with heart problems," says Brian. "But I soon learned that I was surrounded by people with the same experience. There's a comfort that comes from knowing you're not alone in your illness."

Joining the team of volunteers who had helped him through his illness proved to be a natural fit. Today, he hopes to pass on some of the strength he has received to others.

Care and compassion a life source
The importance of having a dedicated team of professionals can alleviate a huge amount of stress and worry when your life becomes a round of hospital visits and appointments.

When Mary Shier was introduced to the staff on 2 West at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering, she and her husband found the support they needed.

Written to all the staff on 2 West in the Emergency and X-Ray departments, Mary sends her thanks for their compassion, humour and outstanding care.

"A special thanks to Sheri on 2 West not only for her care of me, but of my husband through his many stays at Ajax-Pickering," says Mary.

In closing, Mary sends up her thanks for having access to the facilities and individuals who have provided such strong support.

"We are a lucky community to have this facility available to us," says Mary, and announces wryly that "yes, I did like the food too!"
