Greetings!
Want to talk to a volunteer about our "Image is Everything" campaign to bring an MRI to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital? We'll have a booth set up at the August 15th Free Family Fun Day at the Races hosted by Ajax Downs and Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario. The entire day is free for children, and parents wearing either MRI campaign colours will be eligible for a chance to win a $5 voucher to place on any horse in any 2010 race at Ajax Downs. Or you can talk to a volunteer at our RVC Buy a Bed campaign booth at The Guild Alive With Culture: "Taste of the Guild" taking place this weekend. We are fundraising for $5000 beds, but did you know that you can make a pledge and pay for the bed monthly alone or split between a team of friends, family or colleagues? Details about the weekend-long event can be found under Events below.

H O S P I T A L S T O R I E S | Fast-tracking emergency cardiac care
Just one day after a special cardiac care program at RVHS expanded to include the Durham region, local resident Kaleem Salam became its first patient. Getting treated quickly for his heart attack this spring has meant everything to the 49-year-old. MORE

Parking changes at RVAP
To standardize the parking system at both Rouge Valley Health System hospital campuses, parking services are being enhanced and fees at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering are being increased to match those at Rouge Valley Centenary. On Monday August 9th, the current system of tokens will be replaced by a new computerized system, which offers a day-pass that provides in-and-out privileges for a 24-hour period, rather than having to pay each time a vehicle enters and exits. The enhanced system will also feature hourly parking, in addition to the current daily flat-rate system, as follows:
- $4 for up to 30 minutes;
- $8 for 31 minutes to 60 minutes;
- $12 for 61 minutes to 90 minutes; and
- $16 for 91 minutes or more, which is the flat rate for the day.
For full information about Rouge Valley's parking system, please visit the parking section on the visitors information page of the website . |
D O N O R S T O R I E S | Former Board member buys a bed
For Ross Deebank, RVHS hospital Board member from June 2007 to June 2010, buying a bed was a perfect way to honour his parents' memory. "We decided to buy a bed in memory of our parents as both had been patients at Rouge Valley Health System and were treated so well, in facilities supported by past donations and volunteers," says Ross. "So buying a new bed to help future patients seemed to make sense and something our Mom and Dad would have been proud of." The donated bed in memory of Christopher and Margaret Deebank will share the same gift of comfort and care for future patients. Thanks to the generous donation from Ross and Doris, the Buy a Bed campaign is one bed closer to restoring comfort and health for the patients of Rouge Valley Centenary. |

A five-year-old hero
The patients were a mom and newborn twins, but the hero of this story is big sister Jasmine. On May 12, after hearing a loud noise while she was playing, Jasmine Mayers found her pregnant mother, Andrea Preville, unconscious on the washroom floor after having a seizure. As she had been taught, the five-year-old called 911 and stayed on the phone with the operator until paramedics arrived. Thirty minutes after Preville arrived in emergency at Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering hospital, twins Jermaine George (4 lbs 6 oz) and Jada Lily (4 lbs 14 oz) were delivered by obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Fiona McConville in an emergency cesarean section, three weeks before their scheduled June 2 delivery date.
"We just want to thank everyone for their help, from the nurses, doctors, police and paramedics -- everyone. We're eternally grateful for what they've done for us," says dad Dave Mayers.
