Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign
Greetings!

I read an article recently asking the question what is charity? Charity means different things to different people, but the bottom line seems to be about helping. When a donor buys a bed, he or she is helping every single patient who has to stay in it. When a company makes a gift to bring an MRI to RVAP, it can be confident in knowing that their help will save lives. Every charitable act is a story.

What does charity mean to you?

Jay Kaufman and Jim WardNew hospital board chair announced at AGM
Former Ontario deputy minister of finance, and former assistant deputy minister of health, Jay Kaufman is the new chair of the Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) Board of Directors. Kaufman, who has served as the board's vice-chair for the last two years, says, "The board thanks outgoing Chair Janet Ecker for her outstanding leadership and contributions to improving patient care while putting RVHS on a more sound financial footing for the future." Bed Race fun for the Highland Creek communityBed Race fun for the Highland Creek community
In 1986, Village merchant Terry Woods suggested that a festival should be held in Highland Creek to celebrate the community and local businesses. This year, the Festival was held on Saturday, June 19th, which was the Festival's 25th consecutive year of celebration.

The Foundation participated in the Festival's annual parade by pushing our Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign "pace bed." New to the Festival this year was our Bed Race, where we welcomed 11 teams. There were 3 heats, and competing for the trophy in the final showdown were Team McDonald's 2, Team Toronto Fire with Councillor Paul Ainslie and Team Legion Branch 258. And the winner was...Team Toronto Fire with Councillor Paul Ainslie! Thanks to the generous support of the teams who collected sponsorships, the Bed Race raised almost $9,000!

Tina Dezsi held a tea party on June 27th because she loves tea in her garden, her close friends and her local community hospital.

"I decided to have the tea party to honour the women in my life who have had an impact on me," said Tina. "I asked each woman to bring a purse or a bag that they no longer use for a purse auction, with all proceeds going to the 'Image is Everything' campaign to help bring an MRI to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital."

With the help of her friends, Tina raised an impressive $1,843. And each auction winner was very happy with her new purse!

Katrina CarpenterMemorial tourney supports RVC
Proceeds from the 2nd Annual Dr. Craig Jones Memorial Golf Tournament held on June 28th will support nursing education and will help purchase surgical and orthopaedic equipment for the Rouge Valley Centenary hospital campus. The rain held off, so the golfers had a great day, and Craig's sister Katrina Carpenter delivered a very moving speech about her memories of her brother and his desire to give back to the health care community that took such great care of him. Special thanks to Platinum Sponsor Scotiabank Group.

Lisa Gallacher donates award moneyRBC Community Spirit Award donation
In 2010, 57 RBC employees were honoured recipients of a $1,000 RBC Community Spirit Award. Employees were nominated for this award for their outstanding contribution, commitment and leadership to their community and for their inspiration in encouraging others to get involved and engage in volunteer services. One of these deserving recipients is Lisa Gallacher, Regional Vice President for Scarborough, Pickering, Ajax, RBC Royal Bank. Lisa helped spearhead RBC's "Give from the Heart to Save a Heart" campaign last year, which raised $75,000 to purchase 3 ECG machines for Rouge Valley Health System.

Lisa's commitment to health care and her community is even more admirable as she has donated her $1,000 award to Rouge Valley.

Please let us know if you've planned for the hospital in your estate plansLegacy of Care Society recognizes an inaugural member
Each year, the Foundation is the grateful recipient of bequests and other realized planned gifts. However, we often have not been given prior notice of the donor's intent and only learn of their generosity when it is too late to thank them properly.

In order to recognize and thank, during their lifetimes, the remarkable donors who designate bequests and other deferred gifts to the Foundation, the Legacy of Care Society has been created.

This Society will be officially launched in September at a reception, but we celebrated the founding of the Society by presenting a membership pin to Janet Ecker, one of the Legacy of Care Society's inaugural members, at the RVHS AGM in June. Janet has been an active spokesperson and champion for the Foundation's legacy giving program.

"The Foundation would like to thank Janet for agreeing to speak publicly about her decision to remember RVHS in her will," said Chair Jim Ward.

If you have included Rouge Valley in your will, or have made another type of planned gift to the Foundation, please contact Carole Chabot, VP Development, so that you can be recognized for your generosity and included in Legacy of Care Society invitations.

Bev CarmichaelAGM Report excerpt: Auxiliary
By Beverly Carmichael, President and Student Volunteer Co-ordinator of the Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering Health Centre

I would like to thank the volunteers for 41,592 hours given to the hospital this year, with over 200 paid members and 40 to 50 students, our membership numbers are up. Many thanks to volunteers who have taken on new roles and a number of volunteers have joined the Auxiliary Executive Board. I would like to report that, at our luncheon in May, we were able to make our last payment of $67,000 to our $500,000 commitment we made to Women's Imaging. With that behind us we are excited to take on a new project! That is what our Auxiliary at Ajax-Pickering is all about -- to keep the community involved with us over the last 59 years.
