Greetings!
Today, we are publicly announcing our latest campaign: our " Image is Everything" Campaign will bring an MRI to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital!
As RVAP completes its long-awaited redevelopment, we need your help to ensure that we can include a state-of-the-art MRI in our new expanded Diagnostic Imaging Centre. Together, we can give west Durham the best health care, close to home!

H O S P I T A L S T O R I E S | Rouge Valley staff in the news
RVC pharmacy technician Patricia Hayton was featured in an article in the June 2010 edition of the Pharmacy Connection, a monthly journal for pharmacists. The article discusses how the role and qualifications of Ontario's pharmacy technicians are changing, and how they balance work, school and exams as they work to meet the new licensing requirements. Patricia is one of the first pharmacy technicians to complete the required courses and continues to be very involved at the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Across both of Rouge Valley's hospital campuses, there are currently a number of pharmacy technicians who are going through the process of becoming registered. On behalf of our pharmacy team and the rest of Rouge Valley, congratulations to Patricia and the rest of the pharmacy technicians working on this achievement. |
Community Outreach
Rouge Valley continues to communicate with its communities more than ever. The hospital's Community Outreach webpage provides access for you to read the presentations that RVHS has made at meetings of community organizations, health care providers and government organizations in east Toronto and west Durham. RHVS welcomes invitations to present to and answer questions from your organization.
As of June 2010, community outreach audiences receive a copy of our Getting To Know flyer about the hospital and the health care system. |
D O N O R S T O R I E S | Foundation launches MRI fundraising Campaign:
Image is Everything
The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of its " Image is Everything" Campaign to fund a new, permanent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus. The MRI will produce detailed, clear images of the body for improved diagnoses. It will also provide greater patient comfort, and allow for some freedom of movement during a much-quieter, shorter scan, with no side effects.
The first community donation to the Campaign is from Lincoln Avenue Public School in Ajax. The students' Lincoln Lions basketball team raised $350 from a bake sale. Today, the Campaign Cabinet accepted the cheque, then challenged the Lions to a friendly game of hoops!
Photos from the fun-filled community launch and basketball game can be viewed online on our Photo Gallery.

Finger-Lickin' good fundraising
Last weekend, the Foundation partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Ajax and Pickering at their 3rd Annual Pickering Ribfest. Over 70,000 people came out and ate ribs, listened to music, met up with friends and neighbours and supported their community. The 3-day event also gave the Foundation a chance to tell the community about the " Image is Everything" Campaign for an MRI at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. Special thanks to the 35 hospital diagnostic imaging staff and community volunteers who sold 50-50 draw tickets all 3 days; half of the net proceeds are being allocated to our fundraising efforts to bring this state-of-the art scanner to your local community hospital.

Business Links tournament a hot ticket
The weather cooperated with plenty of sunshine and above average temperatures for the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade Business Links golf tournament on May 26th. APBOT Chair John G. Smith donated all of the proceeds from his putting contest to the " Image is Everything" Campaign for an RVAP MRI. Foundation staff also hosted one of the holes with information about the Campaign. Fittingly, the winning foursome was ( photo L-R) Chad Hanna, RVHS Foundation President; Rene Soetens, ConTEST, Rotary Club of Ajax; Dr. Mark Prieditis, RVHS Radiologist, Foundation Board member and member of the "Image is Everything" Campaign Cabinet; and Brian Skinner, CAO of the Town of Ajax.

Beautification Day pays tribute
Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens annually hosts Beautification Day -- held this year on June 6th -- where families gather to remember their loved ones who have passed away, clean up the grounds and support their local community hospital. The public made donations to support the " Image is Everything" Campaign for an RVAP MRI.
Just as the band finished playing "I Can See Clearly Now, The Rain Is Gone," the sun broke through the clouds, and the balloons with messages tied onto them were released. |
Guildwood Day
We celebrated Guildwood Day 2010 on Saturday, June 5th. Many families stopped by our Foundation booth at the festivities to learn about our current Rouge Valley Centenary Buy a Bed campaign, and we had a great time pushing our green hospital bed in the parade! Special thanks to volunteers Lorraine Walker, Norma Koch, Bonnie Hughson, Gail Solecki, Councillor Paul Ainslie, Janet Ainslie, Tommy Ainslie and Jimmy Ainslie. It was a great day to come out and have fun with our neighbours.

RVC Artwork on Display
A painting donated by well-known Canadian artist Doris McCarthy to the RVC Birthing and Newborn Centre (BNC) will be featured in a local art exhibition celebrating the artist's 100th birthday. From June 19 - July 24, the painting, entitled "The Eastern Bluffs," will be part of an exhibition called " Roughing it in the Bush," which takes place at the Doris McCarthy Gallery, located at the University of Toronto - Scarborough Campus, 1265 Military Trail.

Five Auxiliary members win awards
"Durham Region volunteers honoured with provincial recognition: Hundreds recognized at Oshawa ceremony" by Ashley Bain, News Advertiser
Hundreds of Durham Region volunteers were recognized recently at the provincial 2010 Volunteer Service Awards ceremony. The awards, which wrapped up National Volunteer Week, included pins and certificates given to residents, based on the number of years they've been volunteering at an organization. The awards ceremony was held in Oshawa on April 26. Each recipient was nominated by the organization where they volunteer. According to the Province, Ontarians donate more than five million hours of their time each year to organizations and communities.
Congratulations to the following Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering Auxiliary members:
- Isabella Lodge, 30 years
-
Jean Webb, 15 years
-
Dorothy Adams, 20 years
-
Audrey Robertson, 20 years
-
Margaret Sharpley, 15 years

"Rouge Valley saved my life."
Rouge Valley saved Paul Kelly's life, and he didn't even have a heart attack.
At first Paul ignored the pains in his chest but, when he finally visited his family doctor, he was sent to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital for a stress test. They sent him in an ambulance to Rouge Valley Centenary, where he was met by Dr. Joseph Ricci, Chief of RVHS's Cardiac Care Program. Within hours, he had life-saving angioplasty.
This happened because of RVHS's new Code STEMI program, which provides for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within 90 minutes of a patient presenting with symptoms allowing more lives to be saved.
