Real-time tracking system
A new real-time tracking system in the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering emergency department (ED) is helping to improve efficiency and safety. The Versus Technologies system tracks key performance indicators in real time, helping to reduce patient wait times in the ED and improve patient flow. Rouge Valley Health System is the first acute care hospital in Canada to implement the Versus system. In 2008, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) selected RVHS to be among 23 emergency departments that would focus on reducing wait times in the ED. The system is expected to help support those wait time goals, and help with the increasing ED visits experienced in the RVAP ED since the newly-expanded department opened to the public on November 30, 2009. "While our staff have always been committed to providing quality patient care, this program is designed to help increase our flow and improve our efficiency, which is key to patient satisfaction," says Dr. Gary Mann, chief of emergency, RVAP. |

2009 Annual Report
Annual reporting for a local community hospital charity is about much more than simply revenues and expenditures; it's about how donor dollars are being invested into the community to deliver access to the best hospital services.
Counting the Ways: Partnerships for Progress counts the ways that donors like you gave to the hospital and the ways that your donations impacted how services and programs are delivered. This sampling of pictures and stories highlights our mission: To partner with the community to invest in superior health care at Rouge Valley Health System.
Every penny counts, and we are grateful to the 5,913 individual donors and the 463 businesses, services clubs and foundations that made donations to their local community hospital. In total, we received 15,523 gifts and over $4,000,000 in one year!

Firefighters put hearts into supporting hospital
The Pickering Professional Firefighters Association's 2008 Boot Drive raised an impressive $15,000. Those proceeds purchased a cardiac monitor for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering's Nuclear Medicine Department. The Foundation held a gift celebration on March 3 to thank the firefighters for always supporting their local community hospital. Demonstrating the equipment to firefighters Neil DeLory and Kyle Mitchell were Brian Pavlich, Senior Nuclear Technologist, and Sharon Golby, Manager, Cardiac Rehab and Cardiac Diagnostics.
This cardiac monitor is used to monitor the heart rate of patients who have completed a stress test but require that their heart rates be watched during Nuclear Cardiology imaging. The monitor is also used for any patient within Nuclear Medicine who may require their heart rate, blood pressure or oxygen levels monitored. This portable equipment is able to monitor the patient's heart rate in three leads, provide blood pressures and determine the patient's oxygen saturation level.
Photos from the gift celebration can be viewed online on our Photo Gallery.

Learning the value of philanthropy with Mr. Nobody
Each member of the grade three class at Duffins Bay Public School in Ajax was charged with doing an activity that would make a difference to the community. Each student had the opportunity to take a doll, named Mr. Nobody, to their chosen activity and then write about it in the communal diary that went along with each event. The object of the program is to teach the children that everyone can make a difference with a small effort.
Aaron's mother was about to deliver his new baby brother or sister at Rouge Valley Centenary, so he chose to use Mr. Nobody to help the hospital. He held a bake sale in the foyer of their condominium, and he and Mr. Nobody raised $250.
Photos from the bake sale can be viewed online on our Photo Gallery.

The dedicated volunteers of both Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering and Rouge Valley Centenary were busy fundraising in February.
On February 11th and 12th, the Auxiliary's gift shop held a 20 per cent off sale just in time for Valentine's Day, and staff and patients enjoyed delicious Valentine's treats or picked up great books in RVAP's west entrance during the Auxiliary's book and bake sale.
On February 9th through 11th, Volunteers Services had a mini Valentine's Raffle in the Front Lobby. They had 7 different gifts that were all donated; the tickets were $1 each or 6 for $5, and they made $820. |

Something for which to be Thankful
Thank you for the care and kindness my husband Victor received from all of you last October; the nursing staff, the gentlemen who answered the call button, the girls who brought the trays. I also appreciate the help, support and courtesy towards me. In the two months my husband was there, I saw consistent quality care and real team nursing. For myself, whenever I approached the nursing station seeking help, the reception and response was exceptional - even when his nurse was unavailable, someone always offered assistance and did follow through. When I phoned during the night, the courteous attitude and response contributed to my peace of mind. We liked the policy of keeping a nurse with the same patient and writing the names and the date daily in the rooms.
You all helped make it possible for Victor to come home. His original prognosis had been 3-6 months, and last Thanksgiving we certainly counted our blessings, celebrating 7 years diagnosed! I want you to know that what you do, and how you do it, makes a real difference to many people's lives, not only the patients. Thank you all so much, from myself, my husband Victor, our children and grandchildren.
Sincerely, Noella R. |
