Greetings!
February is heart month.
At Rouge Valley, helping people with heart problems is a very important priority. Our donors provide essential equipment to ensure we avoid as many heart-related deaths as possible. Equipment like a portable ultrasound machine helps our medical teams assess the condition of the heart muscle or determine if there is fluid around the heart. And machines like an ECG can save lives on the spot by detecting arrhythmias and other serious conditions. Our hospital truly relies on donations from our community members to replenish aging equipment as well as adding special and new modern technology so necessary to saving lives and providing daily patient care. How will your individual gift make a difference in 2010? It will save lives.
From our heart to yours, thanks for your support.

Code STEMI provides "gold-standard" care within 90 minutes
The Central East LHIN has announced that Rouge Valley Health System has received approval to continue implementation of its "gold standard" pilot program in life-saving cardiac care intervention.
Through this initiative, unstable heart attack patients from the east Toronto area are brought directly to the catheterization lab at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital campus, where they are given the specialized care they need-all within a crucial 90-minute window. Simply put, the sooner a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is provided by our cardiac care program, the better a patient's chance of surviving a heart attack. Furthermore, Code STEMI has helped to move patients out of the emergency department more quickly and get them home much sooner. MORE |

Mayor's Gala gift to RVAP
Thanks to the generosity of the Mayor of Pickering, sponsors and guests of the 5th Annual Mayor's Gala held last November, Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering has received a portable ultrasound machine for the 11-bed combined Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Critical Care Unit (CCU). This portable ultrasound machine will be used for vascular access in the insertion of central lines for ICU and CCU patients.
We held a gift celebration earlier today to showcase the equipment and thank Mayor Dave Ryan for supporting the hospital with his successful annual event.

Helping to make a child's stay bear-able
Aeropostale donated 48 beautiful stuffed bears over the holiday season for sick children at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus. The bears are adorable with their red coats, and they have already brought smiles to the faces of some of our young patients. The Foundation is currently distributing these bears to various departments, including emergency, O.R., fracture clinic, pediatrics, diagnostic imaging and the laboratory.

Co-Chairs secure donations for signature gala in March
The Foundation's Rouge Planet gala will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010. There are several committees of dedicated volunteers who not only work during the event, but help with all of the planning leading up to it.
Two hard-working volunteers are Filomena Hansraj and Doreen Evans, who co-chair the gala's Silent Auction Committee. Part of their job is to help secure auction donors, usually local businesses looking to promote their companies to up to 500 gala guests, as well as demonstrate their corporate social responsibility.
"In these challenging economic times, we all have to do a greater part in order to support our local community because the need is greater than ever," said Filomena. "For this reason, I have volunteered my time on the gala to ensure that we can meet the challenges. "
"With the community's help, Rouge Valley can make great contributions in support of heart health and patient care," agrees Doreen. "I partner with the Foundation because, ultimately, it helps the hospital."

Communication key for day-surgery patient
Last July, I was a patient in day surgery at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital. From the first contact with a volunteer checking me in, to the final goodbye from surgical nursing staff at the front entrance, I was treated with supreme professionalism, courtesy, and friendliness. All of these qualities helped me to relax and confront a difficult and painful surgical experience. I was particularly impressed with the ease of processing paperwork and administering pre-surgical procedures and medications. Each medical person who approached me did so with calm, reassuring, and competent demeanour. Each step in the process was explained to me with details on what was being done, how it would affect me, and why it was necessary. I felt valued as a person. The surgical staff in the operating room continued this professionalism. The anesthetist and the surgeon greeted me, explained what would happen while I was unconscious, and what to expect in the recovery room. As impressive as this experience was, it is not uncommon for this hospital. RVC has a very good reputation, and I was pleased that the staff continues to deserve that high regard.
