Greetings!
The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation recently named Jim Ward as its new Board Chair. Outgoing Chair, John Wiersma, recently stepped down after a move out of the area, and the Foundation thanks him for his years of important contributions towards the hospital charity's mission and vision. Jim has been a member of the Foundation's Board of Directors since 2004, becoming Vice Chair in 2007.
"Every single person in our community requires healthcare," Jim says. "If we can assist in providing the best possible healthcare in the most accessible manner, we are making people's lives better."
Jim grew up in Highland Creek and then Pickering, close to both Rouge Valley Health System hospital campuses. He lives with his wife Jennifer and their three children Philippa (in photo), Robert and Keith in Pickering Village. Jim is currently a Managing Director with Redcliff Realty Group, a fully integrated real estate investment and management company.
Welcome to the helm!

More gift of health deliveries
Last December, RVC Paediatric Oncology patient Trevor, mom Cindy, and dad Ray delivered toy donations to the hospital from their friends at Purolator, Patheon, The Guzzlers Fastball Team, Millbrook Minor Hockey Association, family, friends and even students from the school where Cindy teaches.
The Cancer Recovery Foundation and the Sadoo family also made holiday donations of toys and a computer to make the holidays brighter for our youngest patients at RVC!

Rouge Valley mourns loss of long-time friend, volunteer and donor
On January 15, 2010, at the age of 84, Frank Fernandez passed away at the hospital he so loved, Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering.
Frank was a great RVAP Auxiliary member, organizer for many years of the Falby Court garage sale fundraiser, and a personal Foundation donor. If Frank saw a need at the hospital, he helped out in any way he could.
"I give $1,000 to the hospital each year," said Frank in January 2006. "When I went to write my cheque this year, I saw the nurses' wish list of equipment in the Foundation office. That's when I decided to spend my money on something I knew they really needed." Just like that, he helped purchase a handheld pulse oximeter for the staff on 2 East.
In August 2007, Frank donated two Intraosseous drills to the Emergency Departments of both hospital campuses; the drills are used to insert IV lines directly into the bone of patients when regular IV insertion is not possible.
In November 2008, the community was asked to support the purchase of urgently-needed Clinical Care Recliners. Thanks to the generosity of Frank and Ethel Fernandez, the medicine and surgical recovery floors at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering received two (featured on page 18 of our 2008 Annual Report).
Frank was the loving husband of Ethel and the late Lillian, and he will be greatly missed by his widow, children and grandchildren, the community and Rouge Valley.

Cross-campus Cardiac Care
Last October, my husband suffered a heart attack. After calling 911, he was attended to by a truly wonderful team of medics who treated him with kindness and consideration and we will be forever grateful to them. He was then transported to RVAP and admitted to the ICU in emergency. The care and attention he received there was exceptional. The two nurses on duty were just wonderful with him. He was treated like an individual with a stressful problem, not just another patient. He was transferred to RVC after two days, where once again the nurses were so kind and caring. At RVC, Dr. Gladstone performed angioplasty. Please accept this donation as a token of our appreciation. We consider ourselves very lucky to have the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. It is the best. Many thanks to you all. Olga S. |
