Greetings!
The Gift of Health

All year long, we bring you stories about Rouge Valley's new state-of-the-art equipment and bricks and mortar space, but it's not only about the things, it's also about the people. This year has been inspirational. We hope you have enjoyed reading our stories and seeing all the smiling faces as much as we have enjoyed showcasing them.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.

RVAP Construction Updates
The next phase of construction for our RVAP redevelopment project has begun on the east (Harwood Avenue) side of the hospital. Several major changes and renovations are being made, including the addition of an all-new building. Due to this construction, the front of the east side of the hospital has been zoned off. Patients and visitors are no longer able to use the entrances on the Harwood Avenue side of the hospital. Instead, patients and visitors should use the west entrances to access the hospital.

Parking Changes
The west parking lot (along Centennial Road but accessible from Harwood) is reserved for patients and visitors. This change is aimed at providing patients and visitors with the parking spots that are closest to our new emergency department and related services. The east parking lot (along Harwood Avenue) is now used only by staff; entrance to this lot requires ID cards. There are, however, a limited number of disabled and short-term pay parking spaces on the east side of the hospital for patients and visitors to access the outpatient mental health building and the Foundation and diabetic education centre trailers.

A detailed map is available online.
Welcome, Mr. GibbsFirst patient in new emergency department
The first patient of the new emergency department at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus was Peter Gibbs, a long-time resident of Ajax. The 63-year-old retiree recalls getting his tonsils out at the hospital in 1956, when he was 10. This time he came to the hospital for chest pain. Although the people have changed over the years, he says the friendliness and professional care have not. "I feel secure here. The staff are wonderful. I'm very impressed." Registered nurse Christin Anderson was among the staff members and physicians looking after Mr. Gibbs before he had tests done.

Photos of Mr. Gibbs and the opening of the department on November 30 can be viewed online on the hospital's Photo Gallery.

Workin' it for charityInaugural Fashion Show rocked the runway for RVC
Generously sponsored by Sears Scarborough Town Centre, the Foundation's first annual Fashion Show rocked the runway on November 15, showcasing style trends and supporting Rouge Valley Centenary.

FASHIONShow 2009 was held at the Scarboro Golf & Country Club and included wine, hors d'oeuvres, a complimentary gift bag filled with goodies, draws, a silent auction, fashions by Nygård modeled by RVHS staff and family, and a free skin analysis by Science by Nature. Andria Case from CTV was the event emcee.

Special thanks to all the models and volunteers, especially event chair Yvonne Snider, and Foundation Board members Gord and Ann Moore.

Alberto Ibanez is thanked for his gift, in personGrateful patient gives back
In tribute to the great work of the staff in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department located at Rouge Valley Centenary, Alberto Ibanez made a personal donation. Alberto has had numerous treatments and has consequently regained significant improvement in mobility. He told Dr. Marietta Zorn that this has turned his life around.

Thank you, Michael ClaenerEquipment challenge reaps rewards
Earlier this year, a challenge was put to Foundation board and Golf Classic committee members and executive staff to purchase more vital signs monitors for Rouge Valley Centenary. Foundation Board member Michael Claener rose to the challenge. Michael, along with Jill and Rik Ganderton and Sonia Peczeniuk, helped purchase two monitors. Vital signs monitors allow staff to make diagnoses more quickly, detect life-threatening changes sooner, monitor patients more frequently and accurately, and provide the early intervention that is key to saving lives.

These vital signs monitors have been allocated to the RVC 5th floor surgical unit, and Michael celebrated the gift acquisitions with the department staff and the Foundation on December 7.

Knights of Columbus are great supportersService Club's
gifts in action
The Knights of Columbus generously donated $1,500 for the purchase of digital thermometers for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus, and they are now in use on the inpatient surgical unit. Digital thermometers give a more accurate reading of a patient's temperature, and are useful to monitor any change in condition, however slight.

To show their appreciation, Julie Baker, Surgical Floor Manager; Athalie Scott, Surgical Floor CPL; and front line staff were photographed showcasing the new equipment.

Toys brighten patients' spiritsRotary spreads cheer to hospitalized kids
The Rotary Club of Ajax donated more than 200 toys for the paediatric patients at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering on November 25. Toy drives are an integral part of our annual Gift of Health campaign, and the gifts help brighten the spirits of our young patients in multiple departments, including emergency, the fracture clinic, the lab and of course paediatrics.

Photos of Tom Sharples and Club President Tony Pelosi delivering the donations can be viewed on the Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser's website.

Former Board member's contributions live on
There are people in this world who are involved deeply in everything they touch. They're fascinated by many things, and maintain a faithful commitment to their community and the projects they take on. June Abel is proud to say that her husband, Tom, who passed away two years ago, was one of those people. When Tom and June moved to Scarborough in 1967, Tom's attention turned to the Centenary Hospital. He joined the Board of Directors and jumped into a $6 million fundraising campaign. Tom was also a patient more than once at Rouge Valley, and developed a great respect for the doctors and the care that he received. He devoted hundreds of volunteer hours toward raising money for needed equipment, the Margaret Birch Wing, and anything that would create a great hospital.

June says that with Tom's huge commitment to Rouge Valley, there was no question that he would want to include the hospital in their estate planning when the time came. June says she's grateful that Tom many years ago initiated talk about bequests. "I think bequest giving is really terribly important and people should plan ahead," she says, "and that serious consideration should be given while you are in good health. It really helped our family to know what Tom's exact wishes were, because he had so many interests," she continues. "Our family is proud of what Tom accomplished in his lifetime and also the good work that will continue because of his bequests."

Gift of Health for wife
On September 22, my wife suffered a heart attack.

An ambulance showed up within a few minutes. An efficient paramedic made my wife comfortable and hooked her up to a portable analyzer. While assessing my wife's condition, the paramedic questioned me about my wife's medication and medical history. Then the ambulance took off with their patient.

By the time I arrived at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, my wife was being cared for by the busy night staff of the Intensive Care Unit, where several tests were done during the following days. Subsequently, my wife was transferred to the second floor of the hospital's west wing, under the care of Dr. Baker and a group of friendly, caring and hardworking nurses. Following a consultation between Dr. Baker and cardiologist Dr. Leader, my wife was transferred to another hospital for surgery and was later ambulanced back to RVAP to recover under the care of Dr. Baker and her busy team.

My thanks go to all these dedicated groups and individuals.
