Greetings!
The Tree of Life campaign by Shoppers Drug Mart ends today. If you purchased your leaf or apple, the Foundation thanks you on behalf of the women and children in east Toronto and west Durham. If you haven't, there's still time! There are 30 local participating stores, conveniently open until midnight, or you can donate online to the store closest to you supporting us.
Every penny counts to support access to excellent hospital care, right in your backyard. Tomorrow is the annual Pickering Professional Firefighters Associate Boot Drive, where our local heroes work side-by-side with community volunteers to collect spare change from drivers in designated parking lots. We'll be at seven locations, but if you come to Lone Star restaurant between 1 and 4 p.m. and let me take your picture, I'll be sure to put it up on our Photo Gallery!

Rogers Jolly Trolley Program Lifts Kids' Spirits
For the past 16 years, the Jolly Trolley program has brought colourful mobile entertainment units to young patients across the country in hopes of generating smiles and providing a welcome distraction during their hospital stay. Our Shoniker Clinic recently received one, complete with a 32" BRAVIA high definition LCD TV, the latest Sony PLAYSTATION 3 game console with Blu-ray Disc and DVD playback, and a vast library of exciting movies and games on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. Special thanks to Rogers Plus and the Sony Canada Charitable Foundation for this much-needed donation.

Coaching for a cause
Local business Rob Vivian Coaching approached the Foundation about an idea they had for a fundraiser for the hospital right in their backyard. They were hosting two coaching seminars for real estate agents and wanted to donate 100% of the $10 registration fee. The seminar -- The five mistakes realtors make and how to fix them -- was held on September 9 at the Ajax Convention Centre and on September 23 at the Toronto Double Tree Hilton. A huge success, this third-party event raised $1,080 for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus.

Breast cancer survivor gives back to Rouge Valley
Gail Snyders, who battled and beat breast cancer at Rouge Valley Centenary, created the Bevy of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation to support both the women diagnosed with the disease and the local healthcare providers who treat them. Every year, she creates and raffles baskets of goodies at local malls, and donates the money to cancer equipment at both hospital campuses of Rouge Valley Health System. To volunteer your time raffling the baskets in malls this month, please call 905-839-0690.

Happy arrival in west Durham
Despite living in west Durham for the past 9 years, I have seldom had the need to use our local hospital. Even our 3 sons had been born elsewhere but when my wife and I found out we were expecting our fourth child, we made the decision to stay close to home.
As an active member of the Durham business community as well as a member of the local media, I have heard many things both good and bad about what to expect from Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. On September 4, our first daughter was born at RVAP and when I look back at our time in hospital, I have to tell you how truly impressed I was. From the moment we were admitted for our scheduled C-section we dealt with people who seemed to understand that as a community hospital, the human element is critical. With limited exception we noticed how everyone on staff took it upon themselves to make sure this special moment in our lives was not tainted by an impersonal touch and a laissez-faire attitude.
I want to offer special thanks to Deb and Robyn who were my wife's primary nurses while recovering as they truly made our time there more enjoyable. Also thanks go to Dr. Eltayeb for delivering our beautiful little girl. Despite the numerous challenges of being a hospital that is struggling to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community, I can tell you first hand that we all should feel proud of the work that they do!!
