Greetings!

September is here already. Kids are heading back to school, and the nights are getting cooler. But at the Foundation, we love the fall because it's the beginning of great events for us to help with and benefit from!

Next Thursday, we'll be hosting our Mayors' Charity Golf Classic, and our fingers are crossed for continued summer-like weather. Also this month, we'll help Shoppers Drug Mart kick off their Tree of Life campaign, and next month we'll help the firefighters of Pickering with their annual Boot Drive. November will be very busy with two Santa Claus parades and the City of Pickering Mayor's Gala.

Happy long weekend!

RVHSF Communications Officer

Protect yourself this flu season
Autumn not only signals the end of summer; it's also the beginning of influenza (flu) season. Because the flu virus tends to flourish in cooler, damp conditions, and with the cooler temperatures forcing people indoors, it makes the virus easier to spread. And while cases of the flu during this time of year is quite common, there could be another health alert on H1N1 (swine) flu cases similar to what was experienced in April and May. There are many things that you can do to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. MORE

2009 Miss Asphalt JunkiesBiker bash backs RVAP
The Asphalt Junkies' 2nd Annual Bringing Daytona Beach to the GTA event, held on August 16, raised $500 to help purchase equipment for the new Emergency Department at the Ajax and Pickering hospital campus of the Rouge Valley Health System.

"We are committed to donating our time and a portion of sales of our products from any of the events we host or participate in, and we're always proud to support our local community hospital," said organizer Lesley Douglas.

BMO Community barbecueBanking on a great barbecue
The Foundation was invited to participate in BMO Scarborough South's first community barbecue on sunny August 22. Held outside their Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue location, the community event was visited by both City Councillor Paul Ainslie and MP John McKay. The Foundation staff was appreciative for the opportunity to meet so many local residents. Congratulations to all the raffle prize winners!

Ammara's first cast signer is Ronald McDonaldRonald McDonald visits RVC
Laughter is the best medicine and, on September 2, Ronald McDonald was on call at Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC) hospital campus. He spread cheer to the young patients in the Paediatrics Department and showcased McDonald's recent donation to the Emergency Department.

McDonald's Canada has been a long-time supporter of Rouge Valley Health System. They provided funding for new hostel rooms in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at RVC's now-open Birthing and Newborn Centre and, earlier this year, 23 Scarborough-area McDonald's restaurants fundraised for a portable ultrasound machine for RVC's Emergency Department with their "Save Time, Save Lives" campaign.

Margaret MontgomeryRVAP Auxiliary loses one of its own
RVAP volunteer Margaret Montgomery passed away on August 18 at the age of 94. A fixture among the Auxiliary, she is sadly missed. She called Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital her second home, and one of her greatest joys was socializing with patients and other Auxiliary members.

"This hospital is my life," she said when she turned 90. "I lost my husband 36 years ago on September 26. I thought 'I have to do something or I'll go crazy.' I'm here because of the care of doctors and nurses at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. So I'm happy to give back to the hospital."

Margaret was a decades-long volunteer in charge of groups of Auxiliary members at RVAP, and remained active until this summer.

Rouge Valley has the best caring nurses for dying father
I have enclosed a cheque for $100 on behalf of my father who spent six weeks at Rouge Valley Health System before he died of bone cancer. We visited him every day, and we truly appreciated all the nurses who looked after him. My father tried to be a good patient but, in the end, he became angry and agitated, so he wasn't always pleasant. But Rouge Valley has the best caring nurses, especially on the 9th floor, 9 East, and we can't thank them enough or express enough how much we appreciate all their hard work.

Sincerely,
Evangeline and family
