Greetings!
Offering our patients the highest quality care requires continuous investment in state-of-the-art medical technology. Thanks to our donors, we have been able to fund hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment this year. But we're always looking to the future, striving to bring more to your local community hospital. Our goal each year is to meet the urgent equipment needs of both hospital campuses and, together, we can accomplish this goal with your ongoing support. Thank you!

Rouge Valley provides quality nuclear medicine tests despite problem
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited announced on August 12 that a nuclear reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, will remain off line until the first quarter of 2010 to make necessary repairs. Rouge Valley Health System continues to provide quality nuclear medicine tests for patients despite the continuing shutdown of this major supplier of the isotope needed for the diagnostic testing. Ambulatory Care Area opens in RVC ED
by Dianna Harrison, R.N. BScN ENC (C), Quality and Safety Project Leader, RVHS Emergency Program
In the fall of 2008, the Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC) Emergency Department (ED) was awarded Pay-for-Results funding by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC). We determined, with the support of the Transformation Office, what the priorities of the RVC ED program would be. The team identified that we needed to remodel both the physical space and our process for caring for patients. In the spring of 2009, construction began. The newly dubbed Ambulatory Care Area was completed on time, within our allocated budget, and we opened the area in late May 2009. MORE

Ellis Packaging contributes to their community hospital
Local business Ellis Packaging in Pickering, part of The Ellis Group, recently made a donation of $5,000 in support of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. "It is Ellis Packaging's pleasure to make a donation to the Rouge Valley Health System as part of our corporate and community responsibility," said Cathie Ellis, Vice President. "We feel it is important to support and help our local community hospital as our employees, their families and the community depends on it."
To thank Ellis Packaging for their wonderful donation, a plaque was presented on August 11 to recognize their generosity.

Condo BBQ raises funds for RVC
Scarborough Fair Condominiums on Midland Avenue held their Annual Charity Barbecue in support of Rouge Valley Centenary on sunny Saturday, August 15. It was an afternoon of fun with jumping castles and food flavours from around the world. Condo residents and their families came together for the fundraiser, raising $2,000.
"We are so grateful to caring community members like Lucy Perri, who once again organized this third-party event," said Heather Montague, Development and Special Events Officer for the Foundation. "The success of this annual charity barbecue demonstrates how much our east Toronto residents care about their local community hospital."

Patient recliners donated by staff
In the fall of 2008, chief nursing officer Janet Harris's niece, an Occupational Therapist, was visiting a patient at Rouge Valley Centenary. She mentioned to her aunt just how valuable the recliner chairs were for patients and the staff who care for them; she saw firsthand how the chairs give mobility to otherwise bed-ridden patients.
This conversation inspired Janet to approach the Foundation office about helping to purchase more chairs. Chad Hanna, Foundation President & CEO, agreed to help her out - personally. Together, they purchased two brand new Lumex chairs. One has been placed on the fifth floor in Surgery, and the other was placed on the ninth floor in Medicine.

Sheldon Lush wins Patrons' Council Award
In 1966, a father of five bequeathed $25,000 towards the building of the new Scarborough Centenary Hospital. His wife and children matched the donation. Sheldon Lush was one of those children, raised to value the hospital and its place in community health. He sat on the hospital board of directors from 1988 until 1994, and set a positive example by making a personal pledge to the "Expect the Extraordinary" Capital Campaign in 1998 while on the Foundation Board. He understands the value of corporate partnerships, introducing the Foundation to local businesses. Giving to Centenary for 43 years, he has been recognized on our Benefactors' Circle wall.
The award, accepted by Sheldon's son Dave Lush, was presented at our recent AGM. Photo by William Meijer |

Recognizing team efforts
I have over the past couple of months had the experience of having several procedures, tests and appointments at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. I have really been impressed by the teamwork and professionalism of the staff and I would like to recognize that. I would like to thank management, the surgical team, the recovery team and especially the nursing team on the fourth floor. I am making a donation as a token of my gratitude.
Many thanks!
