Thanks to Astral Media for providing this opportunity! If you live or work in east Toronto, you may have noticed our new bus shelter advertisement on the northwest corner of Neilson and Ellesmere Roads in front of Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC). The ad is the first of four to run within a five-kilometre radius around RVC over the next twelve months. It is the companion piece to the "Right in Your Backyard" program we ran in Ajax and Pickering for the last year. This program promotes Rouge Valley Health System and our excellent services to the community. This first ad features surgeon Dr. Naresh Mohan and RPN Natalia Kremneva from RVC's 5th level surgical program. While this first ad is a general advertisement for RVC, the ones to follow will promote various patient services programs.

The latest physician to join Rouge Valley Health System's medical group will lead the infectious diseases team, and continue with the hospital's commitment to preventing and effectively treating infectious diseases, including the H1N1 virus. Dr. Abdelbaset Belhaj is the new infectious diseases consultant and medical director of the infection prevention and control team. In case you haven't already picked up your copy of the new Echo, you can check it out online. Here are just some of the articles featured in this issue:
  • Flying the Green Flag: The word that is top of mind for RVHS staff members, physicians and volunteers is "accreditation," the process the hospital goes through every three years to affirm that we are meeting the national standards for quality health care.
  • Pandemic Plan for RVHS: With H1N1 now a part of our global reality, it is good that the update to Rouge Valley's pandemic plan is well underway.
  • MOREob Program: Rouge Valley has revived the quality-focused obstetrics program, MOREob (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently), which is helping to ensure that obstetrical patients are receiving the utmost in patient safety and care.

2009 Golf Classic nets $50KGolf Classic proceeds to RVC Vital Signs Monitors
The 19th Annual Golf Classic fundraising tournament, held yesterday, raised $50,000, the proceeds from which will purchase vital signs monitors for Rouge Valley Centenary. Guest speaker Diane Tomarchio, RVHS RN, explained why this equipment is so vital to the hospital staff and patients alike. With more vital signs monitors, Rouge Valley staff can make diagnoses more quickly, detect life-threatening changes sooner, monitor patients more frequently and accurately, and provide the early intervention that is key to saving lives.

Thanks to an appeal by Committee and Board member Michael Claener earlier this summer, six Vital Signs Monitors are being purchased with personal donations by Golf Classic Steering Committee members, Foundation Board members, and hospital directors, including Michael himself; Rik and Jill Ganderton; Chad and Susan Hanna; Bharat and Filomena Hansraj; Vincent Lobraico; Peter Lobraico; Sonia Peczeniuk; and John Wiersma. Special thanks to our sponsors, silent auction donors and event volunteers, whose dedication to improving healthcare makes the Golf Classic a success year after year.

Our heartfelt thanks to Omega Direct ResponseOmega Bowling Fundraiser
Staff at Omega Direct Response Inc. held a fun-filled and very successful cosmic bowling tournament on July 31, 2009, that put them over the top in their two-month campaign to raise $5,000 in support of Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC).

Omega CEO and President Bharat Hansraj, who is also a Foundation Board member, had asked his staff this spring to direct their annual fundraising activity to securing a much-needed vital signs monitor for RVC. A vital signs monitor is an essential piece of equipment used throughout our hospitals, and it has been identified by staff as a high-priority need. The monitor takes a patient's oxygen saturation level, pulse, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature.

The Omega staff were more than up to the challenge and the winning team of Omega employees (pictured above) raised more than $1,000! Thanks to all the players, including Omega Direct Response employees and their families, Rouge Valley ICU and CCU staff and managers, and Foundation staff and Board members, who made the tournament and Omega's campaign such a success.

Thanks, John!JD Invitational raises funds for RVAP Redevelopment
John Di Cesare met Foundation friend Ralph Sutton by chance, and Ralph's love of Rouge Valley was contagious.

John joined the Wine Committee for our signature Gala, held last March, and personally secured over $1,000 in wine donations. Living so close to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus, John wanted to help his local community hospital further. He contacted friends, family and his Freedom 55 clients and single-handedly created the JD Invitational, a two-day golf tournament, held on July 27 and 28, which raised $4,000 for the Redevelopment Project at RVAP.

Congratulations, Ethel!Meet Patrons' Council Award Winner Ethel Niewolski
Ethel Niewolski signed up for the Centenary Auxiliary volunteers in August 1965. By the time the Scarborough Centenary Hospital doors opened on July 1, 1967, this dedicated group of volunteers had raised enough money for library shelves, a beauty shop, a gift shop and other amenities.

Still active today, Ethel is convener of the post-operative information desk, overseeing other volunteers. She wears her Rouge Valley Centenary Volunteer Services smock with pride.

Long-time supporter's hospital stay at RVAP
I wanted to take this opportunity to express my own deep appreciation, and that of my family, for the outstanding care that I received during my recent seven-week stay at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.

Over the past several years, I have been pleased to contribute to the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation in many ways -- including providing gifts of art for the auction and supporting golf tournaments -- but it was not until I had the experience of being a patient that I truly appreciated the outstanding calibre of RVAP and its amazing staff.

The nurses work extremely hard under very challenging circumstances, yet remain consistently calm, caring and professional. I would like to specifically commend the dedication and skill of the nursing staff in the intensive care unit, as well as the second floor and the rehabilitation unit.

It is fair to say that I would not be alive without the care that I received during the seven weeks that I was a patient. That care and the wonderful consideration shown by your staff to my wife, family and friends during this very stressful time cannot be praised highly enough. This hospital is truly a jewel.

I would also like to express my greatest gratitude to Dr. Stas, to the nursing and support staff, and to the Board of Directors of the hospital. I look forward to many more opportunities to help support the Foundation in its very important work.

Yours truly,
Ron Halliday
