Every donation helps!

Greetings!

As you know, the Foundation has offices at both Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC) and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) to serve our communities reaching from east Toronto to west Durham. Our RVAP trailer -- a temporary home during the massive Redevelopment currently underway -- is being renovated until June 1st. Donations, newspapers and other small deliveries can be dropped off at the Administrative Offices located in the front entry of RVAP. Feel free to call 416-281-7342 to be connected to any of the staff usually located in the trailer.

Lastly, please don't forget that Wednesday is McHappy Day. Partial proceeds from 23 Scarborough-area restaurants will help purchase a life-saving portable ultrasound machine for RVC Emergency!

From compassion to actionThanks a million for the million!
Volunteer Services fulfills $1,000,000 pledge

The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is pleased to announce that the Rouge Valley Centenary Volunteer Services has made the final payment on their $1 million dollar pledge towards the newly-opened Birthing and Newborn Centre. This remarkable gift, completed a year ahead of schedule, made them the largest donor to the facility.

To show our deep gratitude and to thank members personally, the Foundation held a celebratory luncheon on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

"The members of RVC Volunteer Services are invaluable to our patients, the hospital and the healthcare system in general," said Chad Hanna, Foundation President & CEO. "This kind of devotion demonstrates how a group of individuals can make such an incredible impact, transforming small change into a hospital wing where babies come into the world."

Photos from the thank you luncheon can be viewed online on our Photo Gallery.

$35K for IsoletteBirthing and Newborn Centre to receive $35,000 NICU Isolette
The Sandra Schmirler Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping babies in crisis, chose to support Rouge Valley's new Birthing and Newborn Centre's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with the purchase of a $35,000 Isolette which is necessary for premature and high-risk infants. Isolettes provide a sterile, controlled warm environment for newborns who cannot maintain their own body temperature. These units can also be fitted with phototherapy lights to treat jaundice.

High-risk mothers and acutely-ill infants born as early as 30 weeks are able to receive some of the most advanced neonatal care in the province at Rouge Valley, their local community hospital, without the additional stress of traveling downtown for care and treatment.

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation hosted a banquet at Delta Hotel Toronto East on April 9, 2009, to celebrate recipients of their grants and to kick-off their Annual Kurl For Kids Charityspiel.

Centennial College students are awesome!Centennial College students give Shoniker Clinic waiting room an extreme makeover
In February, students from Centennial College selected the waiting room in Rouge Valley's Shoniker Clinic as their makeover project for their Administrative & Organizational Issues course as part of the Child & Youth Worker program in which they are enrolled. The idea was pitched by Laura Campbell, who was working as a co-op student in the clinic.

Laura and fellow students Catherine Noble, Cassandra Brown, Anisa Bulbulya, Melissa Maynard, Lesley Wood and Marta Kotynia, painted, laid new floor, and bought furniture, artwork, toys and games. The purchased items were funded with proceeds from bake sales and other fundraisers hosted by Laura and her team at the College.

Julie Kish, Clinical Coordinator Shoniker Clinic and Acting Manager of Child & Adolescent Mental Health, oversaw the makeover project and is extremely grateful for the hard work and caring put forth by the team of students.

Celebrating Earth Day at RVCLocal garden centres send RVHS flowers
Last week, Rouge Valley commemorated Earth Day by cleaning garbage and planting flowers at both hospital campuses.  The pansies, rudbeckia, Day lilies and cushion spurge were planted near the flagpole at Rouge Valley Centenary and just outside of the main entrance at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering.

The Foundation thanks our generous donors Sheridan Nurseries on Ellesmere Road in Scarborough and Vandermeer Nursery on Lakeridge Road in Ajax for their donations of flowers and soil for this occasion.

We would also like to thank the staff who secured the donations -- Judy McArthur, hospitality manager, and Judith Edwards, supervisor, environmental services -- and all of the staff who helped to clean up and plant the flowers.

Recovery better than expected, thanks to excellent care
On Thursday, September 18, 2008, I was scheduled for an operation at Rouge Valley Centenary. From start to finish, the operation was successful in many ways. The anesthetist was very reassuring and Dr. Easton's presence made me relax. To say the operation was enjoyable is a stretch of the imagination. However, when I came to, I was so relieved to find that I felt great. There was no nausea, which has afflicted me during other operations.

The nurses' care was wonderful, and the next five days were spent in healing both my body and my spirit. I cannot speak too highly of the care and kindness of the nurses -- their sense of humour, as well, added to my relief.

Thank you so much -- all of you -- God bless you and keep you the way you are; the general public is so lucky to have such capable staff at your hospital.

Sincerely,

Margaret E.
