Greetings!
On Saturday, April 25, beginning at 8:30 a.m., join RVC's cardiac prevention and rehabilitation service on the 11th floor for their annual Walk with Heart Walkathon. This year's goal is to raise $60,000 for program improvements and additions to the current facility so that the program can expand. Draws for prizes, free t-shirts and healthy refreshments are just part of the fun, so bring your family and friends! To register, stop by the cardiac rehabilitation office on the 11th floor or call 416-281-7113 to schedule your walk time. Pledge forms are available through the cardiac rehabilitation office.
Speaking of great events, we have been incredibly fortunate to be partnering with wonderful corporate partners like McDonald's, RBC Royal Bank, and Leon's Furniture. These companies are going above and beyond to show their commitment to healthcare and community; we applaud them for their efforts and thank them profusely for their generosity.

RVHS Board chair announces search for new CEO
On Tuesday, Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) President and Chief Executive Officer Rik Ganderton asked the hospital's board of directors to commence a search for his replacement. Ganderton will continue in his role during the next several months until his successor is in place.
"For the first time since amalgamation (1998) RVHS has balanced its books and achieved a small surplus, from which we can start planning for reinvestments in our facilities," said Janet Ecker, RVHS Board Chair. "Rik led a series of challenging and successful initiatives during the last two years."
"I have achieved the major changes that I wanted to start at Rouge Valley," said Ganderton. "Thanks to a terrific team of staff, physicians, management and our Board, we have been able to get traction on quality improvements, a balanced budget and a growing sense of teamwork across our two hospital campuses. The time has come for me to move on to new challenges."

It's a "No Money Miracle" for Rouge Valley
Leon's Furniture Ltd - the oldest Canadian-owned retail chain of home furnishings stores - donated furniture to 64 hospitals to commemorate its 100th anniversary in business. Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC) was able to create a Discharge Lounge with five reclining chairs, end tables, a small fridge, a flat screen TV and artwork, offering a little more comfort for patients and visitors alike.
"Leon's has been making life more comfortable for Canadian families for 100 years and we are thrilled to bring this tradition to another level by furnishing Leon's 'Family Rooms' within hospitals," says Terry Leon, President and CEO, Leon's Furniture Ltd, and grandson of Leon's founder, Ablan Leon. "Hospitals are literally the lifeblood of our communities and we look forward to adding a little comfort for patients and visitors alike."
Rouge Valley celebrated twice with Leon's on Wednesday: once at their McLevin store and again when Mr. Leon toured the new Discharge Lounge.

Donation helps patients stay in touch
CHIP Charitable Services recently formed a partnership with Rouge Valley Health System by donating $5,000 to help long-term patients stay in touch with loved ones while in the hospital. This donation will be used for Quick Change and Long Distance cards for Mental Health patients to communicate with their family and friends.
Registered in 2006, CHIP (Communities Helping Individual Patients) Charitable Services was formed to honour the legacy of James Joseph Dinneen, a father, son, brother, athlete and colleague whose time was cut short by cancer in 2003. During his 11 month stay in a hospital, Joseph, affectionately called Chip, began seeing the importance of outside communication for him and his fellow patients. He helped those in need receive these services.
Over the years, CHIP has provided services such as telephone, television, and Internet to hospitals in Ontario and continues its mission to provide communication services to those in need, those who are palliative or long-term patients who are unable to pay or whose funds have been depleted for these services.
Photos from the gift celebration can be viewed online on CHIP's website.

Celebrating a local school's generosity
Sheri Ferkl, Manager of the Rouge Valley Centenary Paediatrics department, personally thanked the administrators, parents, Wizkids and Afterhours Club at Cardinal Leger Child Care Centre for their generous donation of $500 to the Paediatrics department in December.
Sheri presented the students with a commemorative plaque, with thanks. "Your donation coming to us during the Christmas season meant more to our patients and families than you know," said Sheri. "Your generous gift has be used to purchase art and school supplies, books, DVDs and video games, aimed at making each child's stay with us in hospital as pleasant as it can be."
