Greetings!

Phew!

The Foundation has been incredibly -- and happily -- busy these last two weeks. Events? We had a partnership campaign launch. Then our annual signature gala. Then a gift celebration. The best part of all is that every event helps support superior healthcare at your local community hospital.

We hope you enjoy these good news stories and the photos that go along with two of them.

Town of Ajax supports RVAPTown of Ajax second gift helps RVAP in the fight against cancer
Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus has received state-of-the-art Sentinel Node Biopsy equipment as a gift from the Town of Ajax. On April 2, 2009, we celebrated the gift, the second piece of equipment purchased with the Town's four-year, $250,000 pledge to support the Surgery Department.

Sentinel Node Biopsy Equipment is cancer staging technology that is crucial for patient care, and utilizes minimally-invasive surgery. By putting this new equipment into use, Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hopes to increase the early detection of this disease for ideal cancer care.

"The Town of Ajax is pleased to support the Rouge Valley Health System, and their commitment to purchase leading-edge medical equipment," said Ajax Mayor Steve Parish. "High quality medical care is important to our community, and it's purchases such as these that will provide Ajax residents with the healthcare they require and deserve."

Representing the Town of Ajax at the gift celebration were Mayor Parish and Councillors Colleen Jordan and Joanne Dies (in the photo above). Also celebrating were local media, Rouge Valley Health System senior staff (Rik Ganderton, President & CEO; Dave Brazeau, Director of Public Relations; Linda Jussaume, Director of Surgical Program; and Lisa McVety, Manager of OR), Foundation senior staff (Chad Hanna, President & CEO and Tracy Paterson, Vice President Community Development), physicians and  anesthesiologists (Dr. Michael Ricer, Dr. Cooper, Dr. Kevin Smith and Dr. Magdi Gaid) and operating room front line staff.

Cheque presentationMental Health Council for Scarborough supports Rouge Valley
On March 11, 2009, Jim Morrissey and George Ryan, directors of the Mental Health Council for Scarborough, presented the Foundation and members of Rouge Valley Health System's mental health team with a cheque in the amount of $4,300. This donation will be used towards furnishings, accents, games, CDs, and an appliance for the Mental Health Units and Pathways Housing.

The Mental Health Council for Scarborough was formed in 1968 by Margaret Birch (MPP) and the Heads of Psychiatry at the Scarborough General and Scarborough Centenary hospitals. There were seven Directors appointed in 1970 to lead the Council.

Jim's parents were mental health professionals. "This is a good fit, or I wouldn't have done it for 39 years," he says. He and his colleagues have been raising funds through employee and retiree programs, a Mutual Fund company and loyal donors.

Doreen at our 2009 GalaMeet Doreen Evans
The Silent Auction at last week's Paint the Town Rouge gala was a resounding success, and too humble to accept any credit is volunteer Doreen Evans.

Doreen began volunteering for us in the 1990s, feeding other volunteers and decorating during our Festival of Trees. For the past four years, she has been donating her time to our annual signature gala on the silent auction committee.

"Volunteering keeps me busy," she says. "The projects I get to help with are always fun, and I get to give back to my community. I work with great people."

Why Rouge Valley? "Centenary is my local hospital; it's where my daughter was born and where my husband passed away. I'm connected to it."

RVAP provides high level of care
On January 9, 2009, I had a hysterectomy at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) hospital. As you know, I've been a contributor to the Foundation for many years. This year, I'd like to make a larger donation to the Gynaecology area of the Surgery Program due to the excellent care I received there.

My operation was performed by Dr. Gordillo and was done so well that I experienced hardly any pain. I am currently healing very well. I also want to thank the others in the operating room who started the operation. Then I was turned over to the caring watch of the nurses on the fourth floor west. They helped me to recover well during those first few days.

RVAP continues to provide a high level of care, even while they are working through all of the changes taking place. I am happy to continue my support of the hospital.
