RVHS praised for transparency
The Hospital Report Card: Ontario 2009 assesses up to 50 measures of patient safety and in-hospital care in Ontario's acute care hospitals. These measures include death rates, adverse events, volumes of procedures and utilization rates. The measures fall into three categories: hospital procedures, medical conditions and those related to child birth. Both RVHS hospital campuses' results are listed in this edition.

RVHS visiting hours
Beginning April 1, 2009, Rouge Valley Health System will shift from its current open visiting hours policy to standard visiting hours. The revised visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and will include a two-visitors-at-a-time policy. In the Emergency Departments, only one visitor per patient will be allowed.
"The reasons for this change are to improve patient recovery and safety, plus staff safety and hospital security," says Janet Harris, vice-president of quality, risk, professional practice and chief nursing executive.

Community Advisory Group enhances RVHS Board perspective
The Community Advisory Group has recently completed its introduction and orientation to Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) and will begin bringing its advice to the hospital's Board of Directors.
The Community Advisory Group is comprised of 11 members, who reflect the views and concerns of the diverse communities that make up the Rouge Valley area of west Durham and east Toronto, including:
Steve Campbell, Patricia Clark, Randy Filinski, Liben Gebremikael, Phyllis G. Hill, Hajara Kutty, Celine McCormack, Kathy Sparrow, Linda Crawford (representing the RVHS Foundation Board), Amorell Saunders N'daw (Chair, Community Advisory Group) and Joan Wideman. Like the RVHS Board of Directors, members of the advisory group are volunteers who bring their skills, experience and community knowledge to the board in its decision-making process. MORE |

Life-saving equipment for Rouge Valley Centenary Emergency will reduce wait times
From March 24 until May 6, 2009 -- which is McHappy Day -- 23 Scarborough-area McDonald's restaurants will be fundraising for a portable ultrasound machine for Rouge Valley Centenary's (RVC) Emergency Department.
This vital piece of equipment will save time diagnosing specific and potentially life-threatening ailments in a patient brought in to the Emergency Department. The portable ultrasound machine can instantly determine heart muscle activity, show fluid around the heart, detect abdominal aortic aneurysms, find problematic ectopic pregnancy or determine internal bleeding.
McDonald's owners and staff are thrilled with the opportunity to be a part of a life-saving team for their local hospital. "This is a community campaign: Scarborough restaurants and customers investing in Rouge Valley Centenary!" says Dale Bartlett, owner. "We know the importance of our community hospital and want to take the lead in this great campaign."
Appreciative of this partnership is Dr. K.C. Moran (right), RVC Emergency Site Chief, who will use the machine and see first-hand its cascading time-saving effects. "This will change the way we work. If you can find a life-threatening problem sooner, then you greatly improve patient care and outcomes."
Details about the campaign are listed in the Fundraising Events section below. For more information, please contact Katherine Craine, Development Officer, at (416) 281-7119.
