Rouge Valley construction projects address needs of growing patient community
Construction projects at Rouge Valley Health System will help meet the needs of its rapidly growing communities by offering the best in modern medical facilities.
In February 2008, 25 Neilson, a 30-unit mental health supportive housing complex, opened. In December 2008, Rouge Valley's Birthing and Newborn Centre opened to the public. Both projects are located at Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC).
At Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP), construction is currently in progress for its new, much-needed 70,000 sq. ft. expansion, and a further renovation of 70,000 sq. ft. of space. The project is scheduled for completion in 2010, with the new emergency department opening by early fall 2009. MORE

Real progress, but must stay the course
In his February 3rd Blog entry, Rik Ganderton, RVHS President & CEO, discusses the progress and challenges at Rouge Valley, including: Four Transformation Themes, Deficit Elimination Plan, Patient volumes and Community Outreach. "We are making real progress in improving Rouge Valley Health System," he writes, "but we need to ensure that our mutual focus on transformation, and the Deficit Elimination Plan, does not waiver or slip." Tree of Life campaign harvests $13,000
Thanks to the generosity of Shoppers Drug Mart customers and employees in Scarborough, Ajax, Pickering and surrounding areas, more than $13,000 has been raised through their annual Tree of Life campaign. From September 22 through October 19, 2008, the campaign raised funds by selling a Leaf for $2, a Maple Leaf for $5 or an Apple for $50.
"A large part of our funding stems from volunteer and fundraising efforts in this community, enabling us to offer programs to serve our patients' needs," said Maureen Dowhaniuk, RVHSF Special Events Manager. "We want to thank Patrick Garcha and Ome Jamal for spearheading the fundraising efforts in support of our Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering and Rouge Valley Centenary hospital campuses."

Diagnostic Imaging staff volunteer their support for abused women and children
Each year, staff in diagnostic imaging pool together to make a donation to a local family in need. In December, staff collected $360, which was used to purchase Wal-Mart gift cards. While in the past, money collected by the team went to a specific patient family, this year, with the help of RVC social worker Melinda Sinclair, the donation went to Juliette's Place. This Scarborough-based, not-for-profit, community-based agency provides safe refuge for abused women and their children. The gift cards will be put to good use there. Many women fleeing an abusive situation with their children leave with very few possessions. Some of the gift cards will be used to purchase basic necessities for these women and their children when they are admitted into the program, including clothing, prescriptions and school supplies. When they are discharged from the program to go into their own safer new home environment, the gift cards can also be used to help purchase the basic necessities that they need to help them get back on their feet. |

Triple bypass surgery patient's cardiac care
One day after shoveling snow, 73-year-old William Martin felt a sharp pain in his chest and was short of breath. Something wasn't right. Ten days and an angiogram later, Mr. Martin had a triple heart bypass surgery.
Nearly a year after his surgery, Mr. Martin is close to completing his program at Rouge Valley Centenary's Cardiac Rehab program. He works with Exercise Therapists who help him on his road to recovery and is making great progress.
"I feel great, and I'm very pleased with the treatment I've had."
