Transformation.

It's a big word that seems to cause skepticism or doubt in people, but it is a word that embodies something quite wondrous. All cultures have stories of transformation, such as the ugly duckling, Cinderella, the frog who turns into a Prince. We learn about fairy tales, folklore and mythology to prepare for us for change -- as we mature, as we work, as we strive towards making the world a better place.

Although the new President of the United States, Barack Obama, didn't use the word in his inaugural speech this week, he definitely implied it: "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America."

Last year, we began the work of remaking Rouge Valley. Transformation is well underway at both hospital campuses and, as RVHS President Rik Ganderton reported on his blog, "Rouge Valley is now heading in a positive direction on finances and, most importantly, in transforming itself into being the best at what we do for patients."

RVHS BNC official openingBirthing and Newborn Centre official opening a success
Thank you to all who attended the January 13, 2009, opening event celebrating our new, state-of-the-art Birthing and Newborn Centre located at Rouge Valley Centenary. Guest speaker Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion and MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood, was there to cut the ribbon, along with Dr. Terry Logaridis, program chief of obstetrics and gynecology and Dr. Karen Chang, interim site leader of paediatrics, marking the official opening.

Among the large audience of attendees included RVHS Board Chair Janet Ecker; RVHS president and CEO Rik Ganderton; Scarborough-Guildwood MP Hon. Tom McKay; Scarborough City Councillor Paul Ainslie; former Scarborough-East MPP Mary Anne Chambers; Town of Markham Councillor Logan Kanapathi; Centennial College President Ann Buller; RVHS Foundation Board members including Judith Barker; and many RVHS board members.

The first baby born at the Birthing and Newborn Centre, Pranavi Sivakanthan, and her parents Rajeeni Sivakanthan and Sivakanthan Kandiah were also a part of the festivities.

Dr. Paul Galiwango wears his heart on his sleeveNew cardiac physician loves job, mentors youth
For cardiologist Dr. Paul Galiwango, the best part about being a physician is the privilege of helping to improve the health and well-being of his patients. That's why he's so committed to helping to open doors for visible minority students who may be considering a career in medicine. The physician, who joined Rouge Valley Health System's Regional Cardiac Care Program in November, has volunteered his time speaking with students at some Toronto-area schools.

"Rouge Valley's Regional Cardiac Care Program is one of the very best within the eastern Greater Toronto Area. We welcome Dr. Galiwango to our strong medical team of cardiologists here, and we look forward to the contribution he'll make to the patients and staff here at Rouge Valley," says Sonia Peczeniuk, vice president of medical affairs and clinical support at RVHS.

Dr. Galiwango will see patients suffering from cardiovascular illness at both hospital campuses. "I look forwarding to helping to make Rouge Valley a leader in cardiovascular imaging, and to contribute to the Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT) program, which is a valuable resource to the communities of east Toronto and west Durham region. This should be a nice complement to the strong interventional cardiology and electrophysiology programs that are already in place at RVHS," says Dr. Galiwango. "Cardiology is particularly appealing, as heart disease is a major source of morbidity and mortality in Canada. So working in this field you're able to positively impact a large number of people from a diverse cross-section of the population. It's quite gratifying to be able to improve patients' well-being and longevity."

Foundation manager gets hip to RVAP surgery
I have worked for the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation for almost 8 years.  So when it came time for my total hip replacement, I never for a moment considered going anywhere but Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering.  I wanted to have the surgery close to home.

Dr. Benfayed performed the surgery.  I had an excellent experience -- from admitting to surgery to post-operative care on the floor.  Nurses on the 4th floor, both day and night shifts, were outstanding, answering all my questions.

I felt it was important to have the surgery at the hospital where I work to support, especially as I am always in the community encouraging participation and involvement by local residents and corporations.

We do have the expertise and the supporting programs here to handle this level of surgery, and the results are amazing: I had no infection and currently have no pain.  I'm back in the gym and back at the job of raising funds for RVHS!

Sincerely,
Maureen Dowhaniuk
