THE 2012 ANNUAL FUND
PHON-A-THON IS NOT ONLY
HERE...BUT WE'VE HAD A GREAT START!!!
The Phon-a-thon Calling Team was really busy the last few days making calls. Thanks (again and again and again) to Allen, Ann, Ben, Bill, Carl, Carl (the other one), Carole, Charlotte, Cliff, Daniel, Edgar, Ellie, John, Juanita, Karen, Molly, Nancy, Pat, Paula, Sara, Steve, Sue, and Yolanda. We had a GREAT team of callers who gave their time and energy...and then some! They have been wonderful.
AND...YOU have been wonderful also! So far: * 157 people have said "Yes" to making a pledge to donate or already have made a donation * $18,378 from Pledges and Donations have been received!!! That's still a bit short of our goal of $25,000, but it's still early.
We realize that many people aren't home in the evenings or simply don't answer the phone unless they know who is calling. We also know many people are very eager to see our Region continue providing the excellent level and scope of ministry and service to our 69 congregations.
Which means...we are still gratefully receiving donations! Even if you didn't have the opportunity to talk to someone over the telephone, you can still make your donation. In other words...THANK YOU to everyone who has already said "Yes" to the offer to donate to the Annual Fund Phon-a-thon...and "PLEASE" to everyone else who didn't connect with one of our callers but understand the value of supporting our Region and would like to make a donation.
You Can Make Your Donation On-line
Just click on the "Phon-a-thon Donation" button (on both the website at www.ccncn.org and in the e-news) and entering the information. It's easy, safe and very appreciated. Once your gift is completed, your name will be removed from the calling list.
Of course, you can always "snail mail" a check or send us your credit card #:CCNC-N Phon-a-thon, 9260 Alcosta Blvd. Suite C-18, San Ramon, 94583

Loma is beginning her third year this fall, working toward a Master of Divinity. Chalice is very proud of her and wants to support her in this way, but we are, as you know, very small. Regional Disciples Men Retreat October 12 -14 at Palo Alto FCC Theme "Faith of Our Fathers, Faith of Our Sons" Online registration begins next week!
Men of faith can learn a great deal from each other. Much of the work of growing in faith happens in personal contact with men in the church. This type of interaction can transcend generations and cultures and build relationships of friendship and mutual benefit. All men of all of our churches are invited to attend and bring along a friend, a son, a father, a cousin. You will find each one has something to gain and something to offer. Our leader will be Roger Jenks, Senior Pastor at Grace Community Christian Church in Aurora, IL.
He is an experienced Disciples pastor who has also served the church in other interesting ways. He was developer of the Summit Youth Assembly in the Illlinois/Wisconsin Region, and of the Pastor's Academy, also in CCIW. One of his passions is biblical literacy so he has written a number of adult curriculum studies and developed "Sprint Through the Bible" (a telling of the Bible story in one day) to help people learn to live and think biblically. His biblical literacy program is being used in churches of twelve denominations. Through Grace Institute, a teaching arm of Grace Community CC, he has led workshops and done consultation for pastors and church leaders from Hawaii to Tennessee. He also served as religion correspondent for a CBS affiliate, has published music compositions and was a teaching tennis pro. Current focus areas for his ministry include leadership development and spiritual
nurture. He comes to us with high recommendations".

Contact Diane Wilson, dianewilson2008@hotmail.com. 7. Bread for the World Sunday Vince Mezzera, former moderator at FCC Vallejo, now working for Bread for the World in Washington, DC, has a challenge for CCNC-N: "Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. We have thousands of member congregations joining us in our efforts to change the policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist. Yet I have been surprised at how few Disciples congregations are among them. But we can change that, and Bread for the World Sunday (on October 21 or another date this fall) is the perfect time to start! This is a chance to join with Christians nationwide as we lift up our voices together in prayer and worship on behalf of poor and hungry people. Participation could be as simple as a few prayers about hunger during worship--nothing complex necessary; we would just love to have as many different churches as possible participate in some fashion. You can see the resources I have helped put together for this event at www.bread.org/sunday - please take a look and prayerfully consider whether your congregation can participate!" 8. South San Joaquin Churches Host Bible Study "Is Homosexuality a Sin?" - A Serious Question Only the Church Can Answer Fri., Sept. 28 6:30-8:30 - Sat. Sept. 29 9-4 First Christian Church, Selma Disciples are welcome to participate in this engaging study led by Rev. Dr. Sharon Warner, Retired Dean & Adjunct Faculty, Lexington Theological Seminary, as we explore the Bible references often (and sometimes not so often) connected to the question, "Is homosexuality a sin?" The purpose is three-fold 1) Give grounding in the Bible for those who know what they believe. 2) Give a discernment process for those who do not know what they believe by which one may see what God is saying. 3) Hear and understand a position not our own which will deepen and strengthen our own faith through humility. Free registration is available by contacting FCC Selma at 559-896-2691 by Monday, Sept. 24.

(Ben has been volunteering in this position since last December but with his departure, this is an exciting announcement. Michael will begin this position October 1 and will serve through 2013).
Rev. Michael Carlson does many things but, thankfully, not all of them at once.
First and foremost, he and his life partner, Rev. Molly Carlson are celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary in August. They also own and manage the local yarn store in Modesto, The Urban Sheep.
He directed praise choirs and seasonal musicals as Associate Minister of Fine Arts at Beargrass Christian Church in Louisville, KY.
He served as pastor of University Park Christian Church in Indianapolis. He currently serves as Director of Music at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Modesto, CA, and formerly coordinated and led the Jazz Vespers service at First United Methodist Church in Modesto. Michael writes music for worship in many styles with and ecumenical, welcoming and mission-oriented theology.
He has led workshops and conferences on worship, has served as song-leader for countless events, and has consulted with many congregations regarding the development of their worship life.
As a solo vocal performer, he sings several parts in real time by overdubbing digital loops with his band, TripleOhNine (which is really just his Macbook). Congratulations to Sandy Berry as she begins her PSR field education work with Cottage Way CC, Sacramento for the academic year of 2012-2013. Pastor Neal Kentch and congregation have welcomed her joyfully as she hones her pastoral skills this year.
Is this a Celebration? Surely it is as we announce that our own Rev. Dr. Martha Williams has been chosen to become as Associate Conference Minister for Covenant Support for the United Church of Christ in Northern CA-NV. Hooray for Marty!!
But this is also a CONCERN for United CC, Livermore, as they have now received a letter of resignation from Marty as their pastor of about 10 years!! Keep them in prayer in their special time of transition, Marty's last Sunday with them will be Sept. 30.
Congratulations to Del and Pam Zeiger who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last week-end. Del is a current member of the Regional Justice Commission and has served as a Regional Board member and member of the Mission Action Auction Team. He is also a former Moderator of the CC of Woodland.
From Pastor Dan Paul, CC of Pacific Grove:
I just taped a 90 minute podcast on a talk show that has a primarily LGTB audience. I got to say some positive things about the Disciples of Christ - and I did mention that our region was the first to be Open and Affirming. The show will be online TODAY ONLY, THURSDAY, SEPT. 30 at http://www.lundon-calling.net/main/ (Sorry, we just got this news last night)
New members as reported: Mayfair CC, Stockton (2 adult associate members and 2 adult transfers); Cottage Way CC, Sacramento (1 adult transfer); FCC Sacramento (1 adult transfer)

Rev. Kathy Smith, retired minister at Sacramento First Christian Church is having surgery today to remove a mass from her colon. At this point, doctors have not characterized what kind of mass it is. She is at Kaiser Morse Ave. Hospital in Sacramento.
Your prayers are much appreciated.

FINAL WORD- GENERAL CHURCH NEWS
1. (This announcement has special meaning for Disciples in CCNC-N since JoAnne Kagiwada resides in our Region and is a member of our Training and Care Committee. She also serves as a member of the NAPAD Board).
"We are the People of Covenant!"
"우리는 언약의 백성"
David Kagiwada & NAPAD Sunday
데이빗 가기와다 및 아시안 사역 주일
September 9, 2011
and
NAPAD Ministry Week
아시안 목회 주간
September 10 - 15, 2012
From NAPAD Executive Pastor,
We are so excited to celebrate the life and ministry of the late Rev. David Kagiwada. I strongly encourage you to read the article, "DAVID TAMOTSU KAGIWADA: A Compassionate Healer." We will celebrate this year's David Kagiwada Memorial Sunday and NAPAD Ministry Week in relation to the theme of the 17th Biennial NAPAD Convocation: "We are the People of Covenant!" Through our worships during the Convocation, we shared three dimensions of the covenant: "Remember the Covenant, Carry on the Covenant, and Share the Vision of Covenant." We also had an insightful opportunity to think of "Christian Covenant in American Context" through our keynote speaker, Rev. Eric Law.
Please visit http://www.napad.net for the articles mentioned above and to learn more about NAPAD.
Following Micah 6:8, the Biblical passage that guides the vision statement of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we, as a people of covenant, will "act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God." We believe that the whole faith journey of our beloved Rev. David Kagiwada is exactly in line with this message of prophet Micah. Through the celebration of David Kagiwada Memorial Sunday & the studies during NAPAD Ministry Week, I hope that we can tell and share our own stories on acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God in this fragmented world.
2. We are sharing with you the latest issue of our newsletter, The Voice of Disciples Men. It is our hope that The Voice continues to connect and inspire all Disciples Men. Please, do your part by printing, e-mailing and sharing The Voice with other men. We are looking forward to hear from you and your men's group, so feel free to contact us and let us know about news, inspirational stories and upcoming events. You can also find the newsletter on the Disciples Men website at www.discipleshomemissions.org/pages/Men-Newsletter.
