WOMEN'S FALL RETREAT at Mission Springs

September, 14-16, 2012

"Spirit-Empowered Women"

Speaker is: The Rev. Amy Gopp, dynamic Executive Director of Week of Compassion who travels the world on behalf of 3,500 Disciples congregations.

Learn more at: http://www.ccncn.org/dwf.htm

For more information on Amy Gopp and Week of Compassion, go to: http://www.weekofcompassion.org/

As stated above, Women's Ministries is launching the online registration and payment option for the 2012 Mission Springs event.

Two options are being offered:

The first is the traditional one... go to the website and download the registration form (or receive the registration packet in the mail), complete the form by hand, include your check or Visa/MC information, put it in an envelope, address and stamp it, and then mail it.

The second choice is the online option. In this, you click the link on the website on any announcement of the event through email, which takes you directly to the registration form. Fill it out online, put in your payment information for your electronic check or Visa/MC (and yes, the information is completely secure - we are actually using the same merchant provider that our denomination uses), and hit the "submit" button. And, it's done. You're going to Mission Springs! Very easy, very nice, and very efficient.

Global Ministries LogoWHEN OUR REGION VOTED TO BECOME A GLOBAL MISSION REGION THREE YEARS AGO, WE WONDERED WHAT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE!

In 2012, we have experienced the amazing impact of three sets of Global Ministries missionaries with two weeks in April shared with our Global Mission Partners, Georges and Gertrude Ngoka from the Republic of Congo and then weeks in July with Betty and Ken Frank, who spent nearly 30 years in ministry in Turkey.

And still to come, for one week in August, Tom and Lynnea Morse, will take us to China, the world's largest nation.

4. From Congregational Care, Paula Pociecha, Regional Staff:
Just like an athlete who cannot run and jump her/his best without good food and practice, church leaders also need the fuel of new ideas and spiritual training. The Office of Search and Call in Disciples Home Mission has a
hidden gem of a website called the Well-Fed Spirit that sets that sustaining table for church leaders - ordained, commissioned and lay.
Go to the Well-Fed Spirit website for resources here:
http://www.wellfedspirit.org/main_site/Welcome.html

5. From your Friends at Lafayette Christian Church:
We are really looking forward to this year's Summer Adventures In Learning (SAIL) program at LCC.  Our theme this year is "Makin' My Mark on God's World - Kids Can!" Each day we will learn a new Bible story that teaches what a difference kids can make in the world by being who they are. Of course our mornings will also be filled with games, snacks, crafts, stories, singing, and other adventures as well, all designed especially for kids age 4 - 11 years old.  We think this is a great deal for only $20 per child or $40 per family of two or more.
You are invited to us each morning August 6-10 from 9 am to Noon for another great week of exploration and fun.  If you haven't already registered, please fill out the flyer on our website and return it to the church office so we can include you in our plans.  Please contact Rev. Sara Steenhouse with any questions at sarasteenhouse@gmail.com. Hope to see you at SAIL!

devotional E-NEWS DEVOTIONAL by
Yolanda Marquez-Lucar,
Regional Minister for Hispanic Ministries

Yolanda Marquez-Lucar
The gold medal of peace with God
is based on Christ's achievement, not ours

The Thirtieth Olympiad is here!  Of the 6.3 billion people in the world, there are probably only four people who are not aware of this fact. Images of athletes are filling our television screens, and the news reports out of London have been and will continue to dominate broadcasts and online blogs.

Are you ready for the start of competition?  See if you can answer this important Olympic question:
Q: Why isn't sun-tanning an Olympic sport?
A: Because the best you can ever get is bronze.

Yes, it's bad, and yes, you probably used it already...  If you're smiling, HA!!!, THEN YOU'RE READY!

When people come together in London from different races, cultures and nationalities, peace is not going to be found in a spectacular opening ceremony.  Just like when people of differing ages, sexes, educational levels, professions and political orientations gather in a church sanctuary, unity is not created by a well-planned service of worship.

Real peace and unity requires Jesus.  In his flesh, Jesus, makes different groups into one, and breaks down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between them. Like the X that forms his monogram, the Greek letter for Christ, he brings two lines together and unites them. X marks the spot where reconciliation happens.

So just exactly what did Christ do in his record-breaking performance? Jesus abolished an old way of life, one that was filled with hostility between people. Jesus opened a door for us, giving us access to God. Christ made us part of a structure. Paul says that we are "members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone."

Jesus gives us Olympic peace and unity. Together, we stand as one people at the foot of the cross. We have access to Almighty God. We are joined together as blocks in a holy temple, international in character and united in faith.  Let's give Jesus the gold...

Blessings, en el amor de Cristo

praise the lord

Last Sunday was a hard day at CC of Vacaville as they said farewell to Pastor Greg Skinner and his wife, Monica Diteman, as they head north to serve Country Homes CC, Spokane, WA where they have family and many long time friends. Our prayers go with them as they leave our Region and with the leadership and members of the CC of Vacaville as they begin a series of pulpit supply ministers for the rest of the summer while considering interim ministry.

How exciting to know that close to 25 members of our NAPAD churches and community will be heading to Chapman University for the National NAPAD Gathering this next week. In Regional Staff news you will see the important role of both Kyung Min Daniel Lee and Sandhya Jha in this event. CCNC-N will have representatives from these ethnicities: Korean, Chinese, Mongolian, Samoan, Indian, Japanese, and Vietnamese!!

Thoughts & Prayers

We are pleased to report Bill is now home from John Muir Medical Center and improving. Bill and Bev Plambeck have been major leaders for decades at FCC Concord and within the Region. Bill and family spent many, many hours over many, many years working at the Community of the Great Commission. Cards can be sent to: 8016 Kelok Way, Clayton, CA 94517

We are sad to report the death of Wes Firch, retired elder from Oakdale CC and the father of Pastor Ted Firch, FCC Sacramento. The family sends this news: Memorial Service for Wesley W. Firch...Friday, August 3, at 4:00 p.m. at Sacramento First Christian Church: Address: 3901 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento, CA. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to either the Sacramento FCC Discretionary Fund, or the Outreach Fund.

Word has been received that Hazel James, member at United Disciples Fellowship, San Jose, and for years a member at FCC San Jose and very active in regional leadership and programming, has entered hospice care.  All three grown children and families are there with their mom. Our prayers of love and care surround them.

Good news from retired Disciples minister, Vi Spencer- her knee surgery went very well this past Sunday and she hopes to be released from Kaweah Hospital in Visalia by the end of the week.  Vi is an active leader at Disciples of Christ-Visalia. Cards can be sent to: 20200 Ave. 352 #D, Woodlake, 93286

Our prayers continue for Deborah Streeter, former staff member of the Northern CA-NV Conference of the United Church of Christ, and an active member at CC of Pacific Grove.  She had successful hip surgery and has now entered a Rehab Therapy Center for a few days to prepare to go home.  Cards can be sent to: Cards can be sent to: 37755 Palo Colorado Rd, Carmel, 93923.

Our prayers continue for Marlene Elliott, who along with her husband Bill, are decades long members and key leaders at FCC Corning, and both have several terms on the Regional Board. This past Monday, Marlene had her second of six chemo treatments for lymphoma. She deeply appreciates the prayers of so many. Send cards to: PO Box 474, Corning, 96021.

We continue to keep Pastor Mark Foglio, Oakdale CC in our prayers. Mark is now working with his doctors to make decisions about how to address herniated disks in his neck, which have been the cause of numbness and heart challenges. Cards of support can be sent to: Oakdale CC, 330 Maxwell Avenue, Oakdale 95361.

Pastor Taulau Tupua, Via Dolorosa Samoan Congregational CC of Modesto sends his deep appreciation for the many cards and prayers over this long and challenging battle with lymphoma leukemia. As he continues his second round of chemotherapy, he is driving to Stanford Medical Center twice a week for special "burning of the blood" treatments. Praise God he is still feeling strong enough to preach weekly. Cards to: 2329 Senimi Circle, Ceres, 95307.

Barbara Wikoff, musician at Oakdale CC, and husband Bob, Chair of our Regional Resources Committee is having some really good days right now following test results showing that the chemo treatments are working! She and Bob deeply appreciate all the prayers and ask that you keep them coming. Cards can be sent to: 941 Terrace Court, Oakdale, 95361.

Here is the latest update on Dick and Doris Lauer's daughter: "Greetings:  It's been a while since we updated you on how Karen is doing. We have good news and not so good news.  The good news is she is holding steady with her blood counts, etc. But, due to some reasons the doctors put her on steroids a couple of weeks ago which resulted in some swelling, puffiness, and a viral infection.  She is doing much better now. The bad news is that they will let her go back to her school counseling job the first thing this Fall.  She still has a little of the graft vs. host issue going on and they don't want that to be prolonged.  So, that's the news at the moment.  We still covet your prayers and caring."

Our prayers continue for the following who remain in need of our support and concern:

Darrell Burrell, FCC Redding
Bea Tiffee, FCC Dos Palos

Violet Fields, FCC Oakland

John Grose, FCC Vallejo

Wanda, daughter of Gloria Baxter of Raynor Park CC
