DEVOTIONAL- You Say What? Evangelism?
By Ben Bohren, Regional Minister
2012 in the Northern CA-NV Region
will truly be
"The Year of Evangelism"
Dear Northern CA-NV Disciples of Christ:
Though you may not have noticed it, we have slowly been focusing our regional ministry, mission, energy, and programming to fit the "Our Regional Five Year Vision- 2008-2012" http://www.ccncn.org/vision.htm That vision was developed in 2007-early 2008 with input from over 200 people across the region. See the details at the bottom of the link.
Here's how we have lived this out: 2011- Stewardship emphasis 2010- Missional emphasis 2009-Leadership emphasis 2007-2007 & 2008-transformation emphasis
Our emphasis on new churches and anti-racism/pro-reconciliation has been constant throughout this five year period.
Now, we come to 2012 and trust me, you are going to be given inspiration and motivation and information on evangelism! Yes, the BIG "E" Word!! That one! For far too long Disciples of Christ have been afraid of this word or the concept or the actual action! We know we do not want to knock on doors or shove strict beliefs down someone's throat. We know what kind of evangelism we do NOT want to practice; but we have not endeavored to find an authentic, natural and passionate evangelism that fits who Disciples of Christ are!
So, feast your eyes on the year that has been projected by your new Ministry Council of 25 members, Regional Staff and other key leadership! 2012 Overview of Regional Emphasis on "Evangelism" Final Priority of Five Year Vision "Cultivating Disciples of Christ to be dynamic "evangels" sharing the good news of God's transforming love"
January- Launch Video Contest for Annual Meeting (This has already been launched and awaits your videos which will be shown at AM!)
February 22- Lenten Devotional with related theme of evangelism
(This is ready now!)
April 1- Palm Sunday "Would you come to church with me?" Sunday (The Ministry Council will be working on these materials on March 3)
April 20-22- Annual Meeting...Tell It! Tell It! Tell It!
With these Saturday afternoon workshops 1. Evangelism- Removing the "yuck" factor 2. Missional/Servant Evangelism 3. Evangelism in a Multi-Faith World 4. Does My Church Really Want New Members? 5. Removing Barriers-True Hospitality for ALL 6. Evangelism- For the Bible Tells Me So (Jose Morales) 7. Doable Evangelism- A Preview (Randy Siever) 8. Special Sight-Reading Music Workshop (Michael Patch) Launch "1,000 People Praying" as Pentecost Project II May-mid-August E-Van Special Bookmarks will provide a weekly guide for prayers on evangelism
May-June- "Doable Evangelism" ACTS Course with Randy Siever
One day Saturday classes in 4 locations (Plans being worked out now) See http://doableevangelism.com/
August 12-16- E-Van (Get it!) Five nights in five locations around the Region with revival preaching and worship and more workshops on evangelism like "Evangelism and Technology" and "Sharing your faith story"
December 2- Advent begins- "Would you come to church with me?" Sunday
As you can see there are still some details to be worked out, but clearly, CCNC-N is taking on The "E" Word. Yes, some of our churches are struggling with decreasing membership and aging membership, but some of our churches are also growing and becoming younger!! Of course, these Regional programs are simply offered. Each church will decide how much to participate and will change some dates locally to fit their own schedule. We are Disciples after all! So, let no one ask, "So, what is the Region doing to help my church?" Here it is!!
Once again, I urge you as pastors and church leaders and church members to commit to doing everything possible to get members to this year's Annual Meeting!!
Our guest preachers will knock your spiritual socks off! You can see the workshops offered are meant to provide concrete assistance with local evangelism ideas. And the overall theme will start your spiritual juices flowing. You can see the workshops offered are meant to provide concrete assistance with local evangelism ideas. And the overall theme will start your spiritual juices flowing!
Find money to help everyone who wants to go, be there!
....Do you have budgeted money for evangelism? If you do, use it for scholarships to help people get there. (If not, that might be a clue to what is missing)
...Use any endowment special funds you have to help people get there.
...Hold some special fund-raisers.
...Talk about this in Sunday School classes and prayer groups and women's meetings and youth meetings and Board meetings, etc. etc. Figure out how to find the money to get people there. Yes, Annual Meeting is a costly event- you will get your money's worth and more!
And finally, be assured that true evangelism is not about numbers, or adding new members, or filling the youth room- TRUE EVANGELISM IS ABOUT SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD'S TRANSFORMING LOVE! When that LOVE so fills our lives, we cannot help but share it!
Simply put, it is what Jesus told us to do!!

From Carl Cordes, Regional Director of Youth Ministry, about Feb Camp:
"Last weekend 25 kids and 9 adults gathered at Camp Tuolumne Trails in Groveland. The event was a rousing success. Rev. Steven Moore was the keynoter and the kids listened to his story with great enthusiasm. The greatest fun was the mission project we did. We produced 50 fleece blankets for children hospitals and some retirement homes. The picture shows the results. The kids would like to thank all those who contributed to the projects. Now on to the Annual Meeting!"

FINAL WORD MEET THE 2012 REGIONAL YOUNG ADULT COUNCIL written by Ben
When our most recent Director of Young Adult Ministry resigned (a new baby and a new job will do that!), I realized that over the nearly 7 years of having this staff position, we have had four Directors. One needed to begin her student teaching; one seminary couple served for 3 years, but then moved away; a third got married and had a child; and then you just read about the last one. Such is young adulthood!! The years between 18-30 are filled with incredible life changes-huge changes.
Because our Region has a firm commitment to young adults and to be sure they know the church still cares about them while they are going through such monumental life transitions, I decided to try a new model for this ministry in 2012.
Because I have been keynote speaker at summer high school camp and worked indirectly with RYC over the years, it happens that this is an age group of young adults I know pretty well. So, saving the Region a little money and personally wanting to spend a little time with these young adults (I really adore them!), I decided to help make something new happen.
As reported earlier in the January 26 e-news, on New Year's Eve day, December 31, nineteen young adults gathered at FCC Sacramento for a Regional Young Adult Summit. At that event the group talked about how they would like to be part of Regional ministry.
Some of them also volunteered to serve on a newly formed Regional Young Adult Council. What an exciting group this is! Recently, the new leadership team participated in a conference call (for this group such a call begins at 9:30 pm!), to plan out the programs and activities for 2012. We got this done in 40 minutes! Is that not impressive!
So, meet the 2012 Regional Young Adult Council: Jessica Williams, FCC Selma Mandy Sheehan, Lafayette CC Zolboo (Bobby) Altangerel, FCC Mongolian CC, Oakland Dallas Morgan, Lafayette CC Kuranda Morgan, Lafayette CC Erika Sanders, FCC Redding Billy Stoner, Mayfair CC, Stockton Kelsey Warren, FCC Hanford Taulau Tupua, Via Dolorosa Samoan Congregational CC, Modesto Micah Love, CC of Woodland (There is still room to join the Council-just contact Ben)
The Council is divided into three teams who will each plan and lead the three 2012 Regional Young Adult events: 1. Annual Meeting Saturday Night After-Session 2. Summer Mission/Recreation Trip to Santa Cruz 3. Winter Photo Scavenger Hunt OR Snow Trip The Council will evaluate this model near the end of 2012 and decide next steps.
Most of these young adults are in school full time, also working part time jobs as well as being faithful to their own church. Given the pace of life as a young adult, how exciting to have this dedicated Regional Young Adult Council. Say a prayer of thanks for them right now...and a prayer of guidance for this year. (A little donation to help with funds for them to get to events would also be a great gift of support).
Way to go CCNC-N Young Adults!
